The media often mentions, as in the aftermath of the Dallas horror, that the suspect is a loner. I read newspapers from a few major cities and the "loner" label comes up often.

I'm a loner and an introvert. I love my solitude. I have friends and family but prefer my own company. I've often wondered why many people are so afraid of being alone. Not just being without a partner but doing something like going to a movie, travel, shopping, etc.; they have to have someone go with them.

I have absolutely no inclination to kill anyone. As angry as I can get, I still don't want to pick up a lethal weapon and have at it. So why does the media seem to believe that loners have a predilection to murder or to commit mayhem? Any mental health professionals here who can give me some insight? Do I need to start partying and talk incessantly on my cell phone?[:)]

I have not received one email from anyone genuine on here for as long as i can remember - i believe i got one 3-4 years ago

Now my friends who were female said the best offer she got he was married 10 years and his wife did not understand him, my other friend, someone would liked to have chopped off her head and fuked the corpse - lovely eh - oh that was fet

I am intj with cfs what do you know of lonely

Being a loner may mean that you have a hard time connecting and having empathy for others. You feel like you're outside and develop a "me vs them" attitude. You develop habits and quirks because there is no one else to consider. So, for someone that has emotional issues, it means that the only input is from themselves with no one representing the "conscience".

Being a loner isn't automatically a bad thing, but for someone with some issues, it can definitely add to the problem.

While there is truth that being a loner can make developing certain unhealthy outlooks/irrationalities easier, I don't think that is the reason for the near universal reporting. It is comforting to say that the person who did the horrible thing was a loner, because that implies that he or she wasn't part of *us*. He or she wasn't a member of our tribe. The person being a loner provides excuses for those whom the person did interact with to have not done anything. Also, if you are an individual being interviewed, you will have an strong desire to disassociate yourself from the person. Who wants to be on national media going "Yeah, I was best buds with that mass murderer." (short of trying to sell a book or something).

So I suspect that the cliche of the atrocity committing quiet loner is more the outgrowth of a moderately complex intersection of people trying to navigate social rules & norms than the actual truth.

You have it backwards, it isn't that loners have such a predilection, it is that those with that predilection tend to also be loners.

I am a loner with mental illness and seldom have violent tendencies. When I do, its MMORPG time. That calms me down after killing a few monsters off but no, not all loners have the urge to create mayhem.

There are many introverted people in the world. Being a loner or introverted does not make a person bad. Some of the greatest minds in history were introverts. Bill Gates, Albert Einstein, JK Rowling, Warren Buffet are just a few to name.

NO ITS QUITE HEALTHY ACTUALLY. FOR A START YOU HAVE NOBODY AROUND TO ANNOY YOU AND YOU CAN ALWAYS WIN ARGUMENTS WITH YOURSELF. ASK LUCY LASTIC HER FRIEND KEVIN SOCK PUPPET KNOWS ALL ABOUT THE LONELY HEARTS CLUB AND HE EVEN JOINED THEIR BAND AT ONE TIME UNTIL THEY DISCOVERED HE COULD NOT PLAY ANY INSTRUMENT BUT OFTEN PLAYED THE FOOL. Makes a lot of sense. I am a bit of a sensitive soul and a pleaser. However, it does take me a while to ease into a relationship and that annoys a lot of guys.

It isn't just you. (You are not alone...)

As far as the OP goes, describing mass murderers as asocial loners is a useful cliche which serves the double purpose of exonerating the people who should have done something to prevent the latest atrocity (because those creepy loners are all off the grid, so you don't notice what they're planning) and villifying people who are not participating in the full life of their communities (because obviously these creeps are trouble), which is a win win fro the sort of pondlife who view every human tragedy as a PR stunt to endear themselves to the scum in the electorate. Also, and most importantly of all, it stresses that the individual who did this terrible thing was a bit odd, and so whatever they did was down to them being a bit odd, and a properly socialised individual would never do anything of the sort.
