I think it might have started before that. I remember 06/07 just nosing around to see online BDSM things and I found a lot of people had no clue than either. the most I came up with, they saw some BDSM porn, thought this was a good way to get erotic sex and developed online personas to attain to what they saw.

If you explained everything and made it clear it was disrespectful to you and he still did it, and not just once, he's either a lost cause, or doing it on purpose (I don't know which is worse). If he really didn't understand, he should have asked for clarification.
