In the urban areas, things have had to be brought up to code. But small, rural areas don't get inspected unless they are sold.

That's a very scary thought!!

The house I live in is up to code, however, it is a modular and even though the house after assembly on site is supposed to be well grounded, I do not take a chance on anything.

Besides, I live by the old rule, if something can go disastrously wrong, you can bet it will, and ten times worse than you expect.

Jeeez Jeff, I can't imagine being quite soo paranoid.
I don't think you can electrocute yourself over here if you tried.
The absolute worst that could happen is to trip the RCD switch or blow a fuse in the fusebox.
And considering we are on 240V 50Hz instead of your 110V system, you'd have to plan something pretty off-the-wall crazy to beat the system.

Freedom, you have to understand, I have worked in fields that, well, being paranoid is a way of life.

I was in Quebec in '89 when the solar storm hit and knocked out a relay at a power substation that put most of the north east in the dark.

I have seen 25 cent relay disable a fishing boat and put it on the rocks.

Hell, two weeks ago lightning struck a 2 year old $250000 dollar home and turned it into a bonfire.

When my sister and I moved into this house, I had the power company put a surge protector on the main feed into the house, then I put surge protectors on every piece of electronics in the house.

When I rewired the home on the other property, I put each room on an independent breaker. Every room where there is a sink has a gfi breaker.

Hell, the original walls of the home were built in 1867, everything I have done has been built within the shell of the old house.

The house itself was built against a limestone face, with a southern exposure, and the original builder actually dug into the limestone face to make a storage cellar (as well as a place to hide from unfriendly Comanches.)

I have actually expanded that so that, if necessary, it can sleep 10 people with food stores for everyone up to a year.

A second structure on that property is an old Nike SAM control center, which is partially underground. It is actually on top of the bluff and fifty meters to the west.

I have actually seriously thought of connecting the two structures, as well as leaving both looking as if they are inhabitable.

My reasons are simple, in may of 89, I saw what happened when a large chunk of the country was plunged into a blackout, and the resulting panic and mob mentality.

In the fall of 89, I was in Oakland, laying in the bunk of my semi when I watched the Nimitz freeway collapse from the earthquake. Again I got to witness first hand the panic and mob mentality, which was just as evident as the heroic actions to save lives.

I also worked for an international security firm that had contracts with the WHO. Some of the shit people do when there is a major disease outbreak is beyond belief.

If you are familiar with the Tremor movies, you will understand when I say Bert Gummer had it easy dealing with graboids, shriekers and assblasters. In a crisis, people are prone to go from sensible to insane in a matter of seconds.

In other words, I have seen what happens when every failsafe system goes "FUCK YOU I QUIT."
