Should the Cajun Navy or any other such group be regulated? I can identify lots of pros and cons. But ultimately, we the people should decide and dictate to our elected representatives who "work at the will of the people" our thoughts. And I don't believe it is limited to the Cajun Navy, but any such group anywhere.
Chaska mentioned it, and I want to put it in play. The duty of public safety officials, be they police, firefighters, EMT's, etc. is to protect the safety of the public. Part of that could very easily be preventing the public from more-dangerous-than-usual conditions, such as a flooded area.
While it seems that a volunteer in the 'Cajun Navy' is likely to understand the risks involved and have the necessary ability and experience to navigate a flooded area, how is a public safety officer to know that? Someone without the necessary ability and/or experience might end up making the situation more difficult for the public safety officers. From that POV, I can see why an area could be blocked off to the general public, including 'Cajun Navy' volunteers.
However, there is something that just keeps gnawing at the thought of Cajun Navy volunteers not being allowed to assist their friends, neighbors, and community when they're needed.
From a "what's government to do" standpoint, this is a sticky situation. I have no answer, but I'd likely side with the 'Cajun Navy' not being regulated.
