Artificial Intelligence as it appears these days is something neither worrying nor interesting me as long as there is an "Off" button (but surely Jobs succ. will do away with that one sooner or later too).

Natural Intelligence however ...

1) do you want something in your home that will constantly tell you all the things you are doing that are unhealthy?

One phone in our house has an app that reminds us to drink water and to get more steps in. Another phone used to actually suggest "Why don't you go for a walk?"

quote:

2) do you want your computer to cheerfully announce "Good morning" every freaking day?

Not really, but I'd like another type of greeting, maybe some soft piano music. And I'd like to then drink my coffee which, through the magic of programming, is ready and waiting for me as soon as I walk in the kitchen.

quote:

3) I do not see how you can program or create an AI that will lie.

So, ladies, if you ask the question "Does this make me look fat?" while the male in your life will most likely say 'no' (out of a sense of self preservation) that AI computer is going to say exactly what you do not want to hear, and probably in great detail.

Obviously you haven't met the male in my life.

quote:

4) how about AI in your car?

Think about it, it is bad enough when you have a side or back seat driver telling you what you are doing wrong, but the car as well?

That, I would welcome. The more eyes on things to avoid accidents, the better. I don't go anywhere without Google Maps. It's not too far a jump for me to see AI giving me a nudge when I'm speeding. I stop just short of being okay with AI actually taking over the driving of the car...but with or without my approval, that's going to happen one day.

quote:

5) Guys, we are known for not having the greatest fashion sense (look at the idiots wearing Hawaiian shirts with striped shorts) do you want your pc giving you fashion tips when you are going to the bowling alley for league play? Or you are getting dressed for a day at the golf course?

LOL - well, like the car, the more eyes on this to avoid disaster, the better.

quote:

6) Ladies, how about the night you plan to wear that sexy, slinky, very revealing black dress? You want an AI computer to make comments on just how much is showing?

Sure, why not? I can still tell it to fuck off.

quote:

Now, for the real kicker.

There is this guy in California who is making life like sex dolls starting at $10,000 a pop (males a bit more.) Now he is working on giving them life like movement and AI.

So, you have a sex doll that can move, think and complain about you being a lousy lover....

I've seen those dolls, maybe on Real Sex on HBO? They're actually pretty amazing looking, and that was years ago. I don't think this is a "kicker" at all. There's a market for it, and it's being enhanced by technology. Just like everything else.

I embrace new technology. I also am a little nervous about it, just like everyone else. But it's happening, so best to learn to navigate my way through it all and enjoy the benefits available to me rather than just wait for the world to be taken over by AI sex dolls.

I've mentioned Tanith Lee's wonderful novel The Silver Metal Lover about this before, haven't I?

Luckily nobody did sell that stuff to our tv here (yet) ...

Alright, let me set up a scenario.

Your alarm goes off and it looks like it is going to be a beautiful day, a perfect day to sit by a lake with a fishing pole (bait optional) and just let the world drift by.

However, your whole home AI immediately begins the day with a list of all the 'responsible' things you have to do that day.

You go to the closet and pick out an outfit that YOU want, however your AI points out that it would be inappropriate for the things you have to do that day.

You go to the kitchen to get a cup of coffee, and you find that your AI has (for your health) not allowed it to brew and suggests orange juice instead. (now for me, at this point, I would pull out a good old fashioned double barrel coach gun and blow the AI's central server to hell.)

You get in your vehicle, set course for the lake and a day of lazy not really fishing fishing and your car's AI over rides your choice and heads for work.

You grudgingly walk into the office, and your boss has some stupid, lame brain, bone headed idea that really should not be considered, and your AI controlled wrist unit gives you an mild electric shock (since it is programed not to allow you to do anything that would harm yourself in any way) as soon as its sensors realize you are about to tell your boss in no uncertain terms just how stupid his/her idea is and what you think he should do with it.

After work, you set out in your car for your favorite bar, but once more the AI over rides your choice and steers you to the local gym, reminding you that you could stand to lose a few pounds because you ignored its suggestions on your diet.

This of course does not count the numerous times throughout the day it gives you unwanted advice, advice on dating, etc.

Two major problems with your scenario Jeff.....

A) You assume the AI has control over what you do and you have no choice.
B) You obey what the AI tells you.

You'd have to be a completely brainless idiot for that.

Wonderful writer. She seems to have been typecast for her fantasy, but she wrote an awful lot of pretty hard SF as well. I suppose that stuff's been downplayed to big her up as a fantasy writer, which is a shame given how extraordinarily good a lot of it is. I couldn't even get hold of a copy of Silver Metal Lover and Don't Bite The Sun until I got an internet connection and could buy copies of the American editions off Amazon, but this is a lady who scripted a couple of the best Blake's Seven episodes...

Uh, we are talking about 90% of the human population, remember?

As I said, as soon as it said, "No coffee" it would be a non functioning AI.

I would treat the AI just like I treat the SatNav - a useful tool that I can ignore at will. lol.

I'm not too worried about AI's replacing learning.
There will always be those who yearn to learn, and those who don't, and having AIs wouldn't change that.

And Siri and whatever else is I don't there might do the research for you, but the moment you start acting on that research, you're still learning. Of course, it's not quite like when my dad made me a tiny car with a lawnmower engine before we had internet, but still... it's something.

Those raspberry pi things are geared towards teaching kids some basic electronics (at least to the extent of being able to follow a plan to build a circuit by putting components into a breadboard) as well as programming, aren't they?

Actually, raspberry pi is getting really popular with HAM operators. Using it they have come up with some great homebrew units.

Basically they test the circuits on the bead board then after tweaking they put the whole thing on a PCB and go to town.

Im using it to design a 11 band transceiver with sideband and a couple of other bells and whistles, and I am considering using it to design a unit strictly for radio telescope applications.

I mean its a great way to test subsystems without going through the expense of printing boards and frying them if it fails.

(Not to mention it means a neater work bench.)

You can use raspberry Pi to build a small Bitcoin miner too

The ham radio thing I'd not heard, but circuit design and testing is definitely something those things would be great for.
Better still, as they keep upgrading the things, you can get the older models for peanuts.
