Alecta -> Female Dominant vs dominant woman: discuss! (9/10/2016 7:28:05 AM)

The question occurred to me in the shower this morning and I'm curious to hear from the forum regulars weigh in on this:
Is there a difference between a "Female/Male Dominant" and a "dominant woman/man" (lower case)? If so, what?
And if so, D-sides, which would you prefer to be identified as?
And s-types, which do you prefer?
Why?

Seems the same to me.

We are all human beings, so I see no difference.

You can call me Gauge.

Dominant with a capital D is a role or a title, while dominant with a lowercase d is an adjective. They're two different things entirely.

I don't get hung up on it much, because around here we accept the roles we've taken on. Around here, I'm "a submissive." But in real life, I'm submissive. There are no established roles that my peers would understand or accept by me saying I'm a submissive or my husband is a Dominant. I'm submissive, he's dominant, and it rarely even gets to that level of expression.

A rose by any other name, if you ask me... but as a sub, I would go with whatever my domme prefers, if I had one.

NookieNotes -> RE: Female Dominant vs dominant woman: discuss! (9/10/2016 9:39:26 AM)

I rarely capitalize dominant when referring to myself. I prefer to be called Nookie, or Miss Nookie if people absolutely MUST title me. Otherwise, I'm not particularly worried about labels or honorifics from people that I don't own.

That's pretty much what I thought when I saw the question.

To give an example. Let's imagine having a dominant man as a boss. He has high standards, can put pressure on people to achieve those standards and you want to hide when he catches you not living up to what he knows that you can do. He is not, however, a Male Dominant, and would probably be insulted to be called that because he has zero interest in kink.

Capping the Dom title is an old-school habit that sticks with the "new wave" of BDSM, due to a respect. It's a tradition that doesn't harm anyone, one reason why it probably stuck.

A "Female Dom" and "dominant female" are ALMOST 100% synonymous to me. A FemDom is dominant....period. No ifs/ands/butts. When someone says "dominant female", I think of bottom-to-top type scenario where it applies mostly to primal play (or having bratty subs),where they will challenge authority, but not claim the title "Dom" for themselves.
