Alright, I have certain criteria that must be met for me to visit a country (or state for that matter.)

States:
1) California: The freaking ground moves when it wants to with out warning, and home to one of three supervolcanoes in the US.
2) Pacific Northwest: Cascadia Subduction zone and active volcanoes
3) Wyoming, Idaho, Montana border region: Yellowstone supervolcano
4) Missouri/Arkansas border region: New Madrid fault system.
5) The big Island Hawaii: Volcanoes

Countries:
1) Japan: Volcanoes, earthquakes AND tsunamis.
2) Indonesia: Shit ton of ACTIVE volcanoes
3) Iceland: Big shit ton of ACTIVE volcanoes
4) Australia: purely due to the wildlife. When cure and cuddly Koalas attack four wheelers, they cease to be cute and cuddly.
5) Italy: Volcanoes and earthquakes
6) Eastern Med ocean: Earthquakes, volcanoes, and the people cant get along for shit.
7) The UK these folks cant speak english worth a crap. It is an elevator people!

I agree with all but #7.
We invented English FFS!
It's not my fault you lot bastardised it into something almost unrecognisable.

This has always annoyed me. It was an argument that my friends in CT made when I made the decision to move to CA. In the last 21 years, there have been only 4 earthquakes that actually produced a memory for me. Two did no damage what so ever and two produced minor damage.

But, there are a whole bunch of states where winter happens every year. I know of more people that have died of heart attacks shoveling snow than have been injured in an earthquake.

Well, I was in Oakland during the cross bay world series within one block of the Nimitz freeway.

Once was more than sufficient for me thank you.

My next point about California is known as Long Valley, aka The Long Valley caldera, which managed a 10 inch uplift in one fucking year (1980) which happened to coincide with a visit of mine in the area.

Now while it is true that I have been to that state and there was no corresponding geologic events, but why take the chance?

With critter type dangers, I can take something to defend myself, but how in the hell can you fight a part of the planet?

M lived there during that time - we'd still take CA over shoveling snow.

Considering I live in a country with zero natural disasters. And have never experienced one in my life. The only quake we feel are mild tremors from Indonesian Quakes. 4 times in 21 years is fucking scary!

How do tall buildings function in these places!!!! And which state can you live natural disaster-free?

OMG, if you were at the Presido in Jan of '87, we probably met...I mustered out there.

Texas does get its share of quakes....bloody fracking...

Greta, funny thing about Singapore....

First, it is not near any KNOWN fault systems, which has it listed as geologically stable (no earthquakes, not near any volcanoes.)

That being said, Singapore has a high geothermal gradient, 70C (158 F.) and they use that for geothermal power generation.

Now the funny thing about that is, no one has actually done a really thorough and deep geological survey of Singapore to actually determine the source of that heat.

Now, hot springs are common in none volcanic regions, Hot Springs Arkansas, Hot Springs North Carolina are good examples, however those places have a medium to low geothermal gradient, so those springs are closer to the temperature of a hot bath, 50c or 100F.

Now, with that bit of knowledge, consider the Pacific Ring of fire, and look at Java, Malaysia, Indonesia west of Singapore, then trace the ring through the Philippines, on to Japan....

Notice anything?

look here for hint

Now if you look at the highlighted areas, you will notice that the Singapore Strait is right in the middle of it on the western edge where the ring extends toward Indonesia.

Okay, how about this bit of information.

In 1943 a farmer was plowing his field in Mexico.

He noticed smoke coming out of his field....

Long story short, that smoke grew into a cinder cone volcano.

Geology is one of those sciences where there is no history of something till it happens.

My point is that Singapore lies within the known threat zone near the ring of fire, and just because it has not happened in known history, does not mean it cant or wont have some event in the future.

Now, as for earthquakes in Texas, it is true that in recent history, all of them have been due to fracking.

However, Texas has had earthquakes due to mother nature letting us know who is boss. West Texas and the panhandle have a history of MODERATE earthquakes, 3.5 to 5.5 sometimes 6.0 in recent history.

There is a region of Texas that is considered a dormant/extinct volcanic area.

There is the Rio Grande rift valley, very prominent in New Mexico, less so on the lower Rio Grande where the continent is trying to go two different directions at the same time.

Of course, there is the Valles caldera in New Mexico, west of Sante fe that is one of Yellowstone's little sisters (there is her California dwelling sister Long Valley, and her Idaho sister, Snake river volcanic fields.)

Then you go east to Arkansas, home of Diamond Field National park, where you can dig for diamonds.

Funny thing about diamonds, they are formed in magma, which comes out of volcanoes, which means at one time, there was a volcano in Arkansas.

Of course, there is the simple truth, where a volcano once was, one can be again. The term extinct in application of volcanic formations is falling out of use simply due to the fact that systems dormant for millions of years, have for some stupid reason known only to Mommy Nature have seemed to wake up in recent years.

And of course, humans, being notoriously stupid creatures, tend to live in places where these things have happened in recent memory. Look at the millions of people living around Mt. Vesuvius. Mommy nature wiped out Pompei and Herculium in 70 AD, a few villages during WWII, and people still live on the freaking mountain.

In the early 1800's, a series of magnitude 8.5 quakes rocked the from Memphis Tn. to St. Louis. The Mississippi river flowed backwards for christ's sake.

So what did the humans do? They built some whopping big over crowded cities in an area that is tectonically unstable, then to really make things interesting, have started fracking operations in the fault zone!

So, to be brutally honest, there are few places on this rock that is geologically safe, if any. Mommy Nature makes the rules, and then she breaks them without warning.

Oside, to be honest, my major problem with California was the Loma Priata quake. I was there, I felt it, and I have one point to make.

If a tornado is headed my way, I can get underground.

If a hurricane heads my way, I can get out of the way.

Volcanoes gives a bit of warning in the form of harmonic tremors...

Earthquakes give no warning (okay the animals figure out its coming a few minutes before it hits) and then the ground tries to shake the hell out of you.

Now if you like living in an area that has the goal of dropping your house on your head, great.

Personally, after visiting every part of this country, I like living in an area that is fairly stable, and if the ground does move, it is not bad enough to drop my house on my head.

Oside, mommy nature so hates California that she is gonna use Hawaii against LA.

Due to the nature of the structure of the Hawaiian Islands, large (we are talking really large) chunks of the island falls into the ocean which generates a really BIG wave.

Try up to 100 meters high when it hits LA.

3 super volcanoes?

I need my health back and to miraculously come into possession of some gold before I go anywhere.

Volcano, Glacier and some ancient structures (the ones that defy credible explanations) top my list. And https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Callanish_Stones before I forget

I was actually disappointed that I didn't get the opportunity to feel a minor quake when we lived in CA. Didn't have any luck living in AK, either. Not long after we moved, (the former) tk and several other people that I knew told me about the one they had.

I did manage to live where we were in CA and get the only single snow storm the town had seen in ten years. (Of course it happened on a day that I was supposed to be in a town about three hours away.) One of the funniest things I ever saw was people who lived at the bottom of the hill with their version of 'snow removal' on the street. A bunch of people bringing out their kitchen brooms in an attempt to clear the road.

Moved away from AK, and three blizzards the first year. Back to the idea of things "closing" due to snow. Generally the right thing to do in the lower 48 because a good third of the people in any military town really don't know how to drive in it. Cause they come from places like...

Wait for it...

Earth quakes fascinate me as well as pretty much of what jlf1961 threaded. Not sure I would Like to be in one though ladypact.

We have no active volcanoes - super volcano Glen Coe which not a lot of people are aware of in Scotland but that is long extinct some 540 million years ago and we were probably still attached to America at that time. We have two castles built on the remnants. I will see if I can find a couple of pictures

Snow is actually pretty rare - last year, my small town, was 3 falls all less than 1cm - Climate we stand at a precipice of 3-4 colliding air masses.

Our mountains are small 1400 metres being the tallest - they can be prone too much snow. But we have no glaciers the last allegedly went in the 1600-1700. Perennial snow patches we may have and fragment

No hot springs either - I am not even sure there is one in Bath England nowadays.

Northern lights may show 10-20 times a year I haven't seen them since 2000 storm - usually cloudy sods law. Noctilucent clouds 5 times this year they are beautiful

The best case of things closing over snow is the Scots ski resort at Glenshee: if enough snow comes down to ski, the roads to it will be impassable so it's closed. That's dead clever planning, that is.

Okay, let me see if I have this straight.

1) Glenshee is a ski resort for snow skiing.
2) If it snows hard enough and long enough for people to ski on the snow they close the resort...

Now, is it me, or does this make no sense whatsoever?

(The best bit is that a lot of Scotland works on a tourist economy, or in the case of Glenshee, doesn't work at all.)
