I just saw a quiz dealing with famous movie pirates. there is only one problem. Every fucking movie pirate they are talking about is from that travesty of entertainment staring Johnny Depp. There was no mention of Captain Blood or Captain Vallo, or even Ned Lynch.

A skipper I once sailed with was on a ship laying out in Singapore Outer Harbour and he met some real life pirates. When he refused to open the ships safe ( a stupidly heroic thing to do) one of them hit him with a panga, just above the elbow. Severed the arm like it was overcooked spaghetti. So they can keep their pirates , both real and fictional. They are a menace to shipping on a lot of seas even to this day. They just use more sophisticated weapons in a lot of cases.

Very true Jeff. Pirates in the 18th Century really weren't the laughing, all-dancing, all-singing, jovial jolly jokers that Hollywood and Denham portrayed them as. They didn't shy away from spilling a drop of blood now and again and courtship tended to be more than a little rough. And Errol Flynn was a bloody Tasmanian.............what the hell did THEY know about piracy ? Bunch of sheep-shaggers

Did they mention that huge chunks of the plot of that stupid film were ripped off from a video game? (And I'm sure they won't have mentioned Le Chuck, even if they did.) As for the "no more decent pirate films anymore" thing, besides The Princess Bride, I also rather enjoyed Cut Throat Island, though that might have something to do with getting to see Geena Davis in thighboots as the lead in that one, rather than anything to do with the plot.

Geena Davis as a pirate rates right up there with Kevin Costner as Robin Hood, dont work, and Mathew Modine playing a doctor born and educated in England really doesn't wash either. Although the plot was okay, your reminiscent of some of the classic pirate films. And yes, Geena Davis in thigh boots was pretty good to see, although I would have preferred a bit less in the rest of the costume.

I think part of the point was that they were deliberately trying to do an update of a '40s swashbuckler, so it'd have been a bit of an epic fail if it hadn't been akin to some of the classics. (And surely you thought Frank Langella made a pretty decent bad guy, at least?)
