Why is it based on income when the verse you quoted speaks of 'increase'. Based on that line it would seem that it's talking about overages (your increase in wealth since last year, i.e. your savings/recreational spending) and not 'total income made' considering that common living expenses (food, shelter, etc) aren't really an 'increase' they're a status quo needed to maintain life. Any idea why it's based on income and not on 'money left over after living expenses are paid for'?

Let me explain, as someone who lived in Utah six years. Mormons are required to tithe 10%. However, on top of that, they are hit up for other causes by their church. I would expect that it would all add up to 15%- 20%, but I wouldn't be surprised if they all added up to 30%.

Our family couldn't afford it. In fact, because we are full tithe payers we've been able to go to the church when we've had financial difficulty and get help paying our essentials like groceries and rent. It's a pretty awesome system.

My husband is a born and raised Mormon and he chooses to pay on his income before tax. I honor his decision. The church helps us with living expenses if we find ourselves struggling and I think that's pretty incredible. And I've had a bishop tell me he didn't believe the Lord wanted anyone to go into debt or fail to take care of their family because of tithing so he told us when we were really broke to pay what we could in good faith and the Lord would understand. There's a lot of things about the church that even members get confused about. If I ever have doubts or concerns I pray. I'm not perfect, I commit some major transgressions, but I know the Lord has our best interest at heart and no matter what people say you should or shouldn't do, the Lord loves us and the details people squabble and fight over religiously don't really matter in the end.

Germany levies a church tax, on all persons declaring themselves to be Christians, of roughly 8–9% of their income tax, which is effectively (very much depending on the social and financial situation) typically between 0.2% and 1.5% of the total income. The proceeds are shared amongst Catholic, Lutheran, and other Protestant Churches... I found the article disturbing Just collections they have here.
