jlf1961 -> Careers we wanted but never went for.... (10/12/2016 2:23:36 PM)

And possibly regretted.

Here goes the list, and in some cases, why I didnt pursue said career choice.

1) Pirate

Reason not pursued:
Found out that the 'Spanish Main' ceased to exist sometime around 1740....

2) Astronaut
I hate freaking math with a passion, and I discovered that Astronauts had to know math.... a lot of math.

3) Buffalo Rancher

The freaking paper work required by the department of interior at the time was unbelievable.

4) Wild animal catcher for zoos.

Okay this was after seeing the movie Hatari, but prior to actually finding out that it was not as much fun as it looked, and the fact that most zoos are involved in captive breeding programs, thus making the job obsolete.

5) Oil field wildfire fire fighter

Graduated high school at this point and went into the army. And airborne was much more fun.

Marine biologist. Jaques Cousteau was and still is my idol. Though I already have a masters in Anthropology I'm not totally giving up on being a marine biologist. It's never too late.

I wanted to be someone on the bridge of the Enterprise. I realise that Kirk was an idiot, but I really wanted to travel between the stars......
Second choice was to be Jacque Cousteau, because he made that rubber suit look GOOD!!! And got paid to swim. And had a cool accent.

Since I grew up in New Zealand a long time ago, neither of these career choices were attainable. So basically as a kid I spent a lot of time looking into the depths of the Milky Way hoping an alien would come down and pick me up........[:o]

you could travel between the stars by getting a job delivering pizza in Hollywood maybe

Right now I wanna be a herb/dwarf fruit tree farmer since we got the 5 acres but most of it is weed choked and got dead trees from the damned drought. My brother does have some beehives here since he took up beekeeping to supplement his income and did get 60 pounds of honey in this first year (should get 400 to 600 lbs next year). Nothing like fresh strained honey for your teas...

Also thought of writer, songwriter, vocalist, lobbyist...

I always wanted to be a Dark Lord. I'd have made an awesome Dark Lord, but you never see that job advertised and when I mentioned it to the careers services at my university they told me to forget about it and see who was hiring graduates when I finished my course like everybody else.
(Bastards. That said, I probably would have had to acquire my own fortress of darkness and army of evil minions, so Dark Lording is clearly a second or third career, I suppose...)

Shahar, that's good to know about your brother. Bees are being wiped out by the Californian fruit industry moving hives around to fertilise stuff, so the fact that you Texans haven't caved in to that destructive nonsense is great.

I did it for a while.

Very little money.

I wanted to be a hydroplane racer.
When I was 15, I test drove a racing boat (not hydroplane). I was hooked.

Kaliko -> RE: Careers we wanted but never went for.... (10/14/2016 4:51:47 AM)

My list is too long. The problem is that I'm interested in just about everything, so I come across something and think "Oh, I want to do this for the rest of my life!" Then I come across something else and think "Oh, I want to do this for the rest of my life!" Thankfully, I'm a long time in a great career that I kind of accidentally fell into. Didn't even know my current job was actually a thing until I filled it. It allows me a lot of wiggle room to do a lot of different things. Even so, I missed out on...

1. English teacher. This is what I originally went to college for. WAY too much Shakespeare. Yawn. Wound up changing my major shortly before graduation.

2. Social Worker. Needed a Masters degree. Life had other plans for me.

3. Veterinarian. This was actually never really going to happen, as I am way, way, way too emotional about animals to be any real use to them in an emergency. But for a few years I lived local to a prestigious veterinary college. I had an annual tradition of parking myself on the living room floor with my cats, a box of tissues, and some chocolate, and I'd cry while watching their graduation ceremony on the local cable channel, being so envious of the strength of those graduates.

4. Zoologist. A pale second to a veterinarian but I like the order of it all. That dream died with a move to another state. Life and all. Again.

5. Banker. No regrets here at all. Did it, liked it for a bit, rose up the ranks and had a future in it, and then decided I didn't want to be a part of the corporate greed. Quit. Never looked back.

6. Astronomer. I've only just recently given up this dream. I actually did go back to school about ten years ago to start pursuing this path - a completely different path than my previous English academic background, so I was really starting from scratch. But start from scratch I did, took some classes, learned some math, and then...fucking life again. Life got in the way. I still have a little dream of going back to school and learning physics, but at this point it would be just for kicks, not for a career. (I think the meaning of life is out there and physics is the road to find it.)

These are just the ones I've devoted some time, attention, money, or my soul to at one point or another. Also on the list: author, daycare operator, dog groomer, struggling artist, interior decorator, antique shop owner, public speaker, piano teacher, baker, librarian, and too many entrepreneurial "this-is-an-amazing-idea!" ideas to count.

If I had it to do all over again, though? I wouldn't do any of these. I'd buy myself a small piece of land next to a lake in the middle of nowhere and live off the land. But, I can't even grow a basil plant, so that's not a realistic option for me these days. (Isn't basil supposed to be really fucking easy to grow??)

1) Anything to do with sex would be a great career for me.

But I would never pursue it, as I can't do that to my family.

You cant be a dark lord, all available dark lord positions are presently taken by the fucking Windows 10 development department at windows.....

However as soon as I can find 200000000000 tons of anti matter, those individuals will no longer trouble anyone.

Lucylastic -> RE: Careers we wanted but never went for.... (10/14/2016 6:51:32 AM)

Like my list is so long too.
I wanted to be a nurse from the age of three(it helped that my mum, aunt, grandmother and both step mothers were nurses) I did that one for many years

I wanted to be a gymnast or ballerina, I was too fat for gymnastics and ballet (at six) so I went into ballroom and latin dancing(at 4), did really well in that, and eventually taught that until I was about 22.

I wanted to be a sex therapist, Couldnt handle the extra study and I had a 3 month old baby, so I picked up where I could and got into sex toys and lingerie and kinky paraphanalia selling at home parties, then the bdsm store, and now corsets, Im working for myself, so I am happy with where I am.

Now I just want internet access, postal access, a river/lake/sea at the bottom of the garden and time to watch all my critters in peace.
Ambition is great, but now I cant complain how life turned out as I wouldnt change a thing.

Oh and I always wanted to be "Mistress of All Evil" Maleficent
I got to be "boss lady with minions" when I worked with street kids
But its not quite as evil as Maleficent.

The talk of antimatter reminds me: are those rabbits dark lords as well?
(They'll give the job to fucking call centre workers in Mumbai and fucking rabbits, but will they let me do it? No...)

I always wanted to see Steve Austin or the Flash trip while running at full speed.....

WhoreMods -> RE: Careers we wanted but never went for.... (10/14/2016 12:12:06 PM)

I'm positive that there was a JLA story where an alien trips the Flash as he's zooming past it. Late '70s or possibly very early '80s, I think. Can't remember the artist or the writer as I didn't pay attention to such things back then...
