Welcome to the forums. I know other older men who have decided to explore BDSM. The easiest way is to go to your closest munch and make friends. Munches will often have other specialized meetings where they lecture on the various aspects of BDSM. Events are also a good way to get involved. By the way, a munch is a meeting, usually in a restaurant. It's a place for kinky people to socialize and also a safe place for scared newbies to meet up with the local kinky folk. No play or fetishy stuff happens at munch.

To find your local munch join fetlife or google the word munch and your city or the closest decent sized city.

The key to all this is making friends and not just lady friends. Once people are your friends they are more likely to help you out in your exploration. Networking is important. I know a gentleman in his 70s. No matter where he goes he makes friends. He loves to be tied up. Within a couple hours at any event he normally has 2 or 3 rope people who are eager to tie him up.

Yes, I am crazy about feathered creatures. I have a dozen chickens, 3 ducks, 5 geese, and 2 parakeets.

Revise that number. Just got 14 new chicks and 5 turkeys.

Hi Peppermint, I was just about to create a post similar to Beretta84's, but your answer was very fitting to what I was going to ask. However I did have a follow up question.

I'm relatively new to the lifestyle, and although a bit nervous to get out and mingle, I think I'm ready to try attending a munch. The way you made it seem was a small to moderate sized gathering in a restauraunt, which I think would help set me at ease. The only issue with this is that I'm from a smaller town, so the Munches tend to be less frequent but quite large when they do occur. The closest one to me is in a month, and they've rented out an entire hotel conference room for it. It also says there are other events for newcomers, like "learning how to play in a dungeon", things that I don't think I'd be comfortable diving into quite yet. I just want to meet members of the community and introduce myself. I was just wondering if there were any other alternative options you knew of I could look to explore. I was under the impression I would just walk into a Red Robin and sit at a table of 10-12 people and talk haha.

Also, is it common to pay for admission to a Munch, or is that an indicator of a scam? The Munch I referred to above requires you buy a $20 ticket 2 weeks before the event.

Thanks!

It depends on the venue. If it's in a corner of a restaurant, there won't be a charge because to the restaurant, you're just another customer. In the case of the munch you listed - the organizers have to pay to use that conference room, so a cover charge would be expected.

I've been to large munches of over 100 and small munches of a handful of people. You just chat with the people sitting nearby. I live in a small town now. Our munches are at an oriental restaurant when the weather is cold and the park in the summer and we will have anywhere from 6 to 24 show up. We have them once a month which is quite normal. We have a play party after the munch. You don't get asked to come to the party until you have been to a munch or two. Many people can't make the munch in the afternoon because of work but can get to the party in the evening. If you won't go to munch you won't be invited to any parties and might not meet the people willing to help out you as a newbie.

It would be normal to have to pay to attend munch if the hosts have to rent a room. Paying in advance means that if they don't get the needed number of people coming, they can cancel the event and return your money. A private room means that people can be more open about their talking. I have been to a munch in a private room where there was a short lecture given on a BDSM subject. Can't do that in a public restaurant. On the other hand, most munches are free except you pay for what you order. You are expected to order something so the restaurant is glad to have the group even if it is just something to drink. You are also expected to tip appropriately.

The extra event you mention about playing in a dungeon is probably a lecture with a bit of showing what might happen at a dungeon. Usually there will be someone giving a lecture and someone being the "stunt dumbie". You would not normally be expected to actually participate especially if it is geared to newbies.
