ORIGINAL: PeonForHer Well, 'panties' just makes me think of a small girl in pigtails panting really rapidly and making little squeaks as she does so. Also, Americans can't say the word properly because they don't know how to sound the 't' in it. I say a hard T. Is that wrong? I do with the words button and water as well. I bet you don't. I bet you say 'buddon' and 'warder'. If you were to say 'warder' as in 'prison warder' - would it sound any different to the way you say 'water'? Mind you, it's interesting, that 't' sound. In various parts of the UK (like Liverpool) it sounds to me like it's half way between an 'S' and a 'T'. The Irish pronounce 't' very differently to Brits, too - it sounds very soft indeed. But Americans generally make it sound like a 'd' to my ears. Not a hard sound as such ... just not the *right* sound. Warder, lol. No, I definitely don't say warder. Seriously I get made fun of because of it. I say buTTon, waTer, and panTies. If I ever figure out how to leave an audio file on my profile I'll prove it!
