jlf1961 -> Really stupid sayings, phrases and names. (12/14/2016 9:00:59 AM)

Seriously people, these over used cliche sayings need to go, and not due to over use, but due to the simple logic that they defy.

unless life happens: Folks, if you are living life happens, if it doesnt, you are dead and buried (or cremated or stuffed.)

Which means if you are communicating with us, then you have proved life after death.

Shit happens: yup, unless you are constipated.

Get a life: The person you are saying this to has a life, they just have no ambition or desire to do anything other than interfere with yours.

You see, if they are living and breathing, they have a life. If they aint, then you only have to worry for a few days before decomposition makes it impossible for them to keep trying to make yours miserable.

Across the pond: Yeah, I know, this refers to one side or the other of the Atlantic, or more specifically, the North Atlantic.

Now the problem is that the North Atlantic is not a pond, it is a bitch of an ocean that makes the cliche woman with PMS look like the female version of Mr. Spock.

Ponds do not have waves that can and have swamped container ships.

Emerald Isle: False advertising, emeralds have never been found in Ireland.

Now what you do find in Ireland are fascinating beautiful women with wonderful accents and tempers that make the North Atlantic look downright peaceful.

Great White North: As much as I hate to admit it, Canada is not white all the time, for at least two weeks a year (Canadian summer) there is green.

Old Blighty: I would have thought the Brits would have put this to rest, as that it implies that there is nothing on the island but blight, which as we all know is a plant disease.

Spotted Dick: yes, I know, this is some sort of bizarre food substance in England, but it still sounds like some STD that a guy really would not want to have.

Yank or Yankee: I include this due to the simple fact that many non Americans use it as a label for all Americans. Look people, Yanks or Yankees are from North of the Red River, east of Texarkana, or west of the Rio Grande (look at a map.)

Spotted Dick a "bizarre food substance" Jeff???
No different to your "twinkies".

Lemme edjumacate you on some of these sayings -

Spotted Dick
The dish is first attested in Alexis Soyer's The modern Housewife or ménagère, published in 1849, in which he described a recipe for "Plum Bolster, or Spotted Dick—Roll out two pounds of paste ... have some Smyrna raisins well washed...". The Pall Mall Gazette reported in 1892 that "the Kilburn Sisters ... daily satisfied hundreds of dockers with soup and Spotted Dick".

The name has long been a source of amusement and double entendres, to the point that the catering staff of Flintshire County Council decided in 2009 to rename it to "Spotted Richard" because of all the jokes they were receiving. While "spotted" is a clear reference to the dried fruit in the pudding (which resemble spots), "dick" is more obscure. The word was widely used as a term for pudding in the 19th century; in late 19th century Huddersfield, for instance, a glossary of local terms described "Dick, plain pudding. If with treacle sauce, treacle dick." It could alternatively be a corruption of the word pudding, evolving through puddink, then puddick, then finally dick. Another possibility is that it is a corruption of "dough".

So.... Spotted Dick is perfectly sensible, thank you very much.

Across the pond
The best description I can find that makes any sense is from wisegeek.
The Atlantic Ocean is the only ocean ever referred to in the saying "across the pond". South America and Africa are never referred to in this idiom, even though they are across the Atlantic from each other. This is due to the fact that the saying is an English idiom, which is spoken widely in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada, but rarely in the countries of South America and only in some areas of Africa.

As a literary device, “across the pond” is an understatement. Unlike hyperboles, understatements treat something as less than it is. A common understatement is calling a bad injury “just a scratch". Speaking of the Atlantic Ocean, a 41,100,000 square mile (106,400,000 sq. km.) body of water, as a pond is a humorous understatement.

Not only is the idiom an understatement, it can also be seen as irony. An ironic statement is one that means the opposite of what it literally says. When someone says they are traveling “across the pond,” they state it as if they are crossing a small body of water, when in reality they are crossing the second largest body of water in the world.

As a crazy Brit idiom - it sorta makes sense. lol.

The Emerald Isle
Have you forgotten that Emerald is a colour and the gem is named after it because of the colour?
The name “emerald” simply means “green gem”. That is perfectly logical, for if there is one defining characteristic of emeralds, it is their impossibly rich green color. In fact, the reason that Ireland is called the “Emerald Isle” is that its lush fields are the same vivid shade of green as the gemstone. The association grew from there until anything green is strongly associated with Ireland. They don't refer to St. Patrick's Day as “the wearing of the green” for nothing, after all.

As for Emeralds not being found in Ireland? False! They are mined there.

Aquamarine is one crystal mined in Northern Ireland. A form of Beryl, it has a calming energy that can help clear emotional issues and release attachments...
Like Aquamarine, other Beryls also come from Ireland. Beryl is a great crystal for stressful times, helping the user to find the guidance and clarity of mind to follow the guidance through tough times. Some other common Beryls are Morganite, Bixbite, Emerald, Heliodor and Goshenite.

So again.... "Emerald Isle" is a perfectly good description of Ireland.
Not only for its beautiful green rolling hills but also for its Emeralds mined there.

Old Blighty
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word derives from "bilayati", a regional variant of the Urdu word "vilayati", meaning "foreign", "British", "English" or "European." In India, vilayati came to be known as an adjective meaning European, and specifically English or British.

And seeing as Britain, as an empire, is indeed quite old and was spread across most of the known inhabited world at the time, it is quite appropriate.

As for the rest??? Meh!!

Spotted dick still sounds like a venereal disease.

agreed. No explanation can make it sound any less so.

WhoreMods -> RE: Really stupid sayings, phrases and names. (12/14/2016 1:42:45 PM)

It's a pretty vile pudding, really. Not even as good as it sounds...

freedomdwarf1 -> RE: Really stupid sayings, phrases and names. (12/14/2016 1:46:52 PM)

Awwww.
You must have had a bad one coz they're very yummy - especially with custard [8D]

A lot depends on the quality of the sponge pudding itself as well as the fruit used.

Just like those scotch drop-scones (like the American pretend pancakes).
Most were god-awful but there were some nice ones too.

Not sure how it could sound less appealing. The name itself gives a visual image of an std.

That's because the word 'dick' has evolved into something more sinister in modern times.

You seen many STD's that look like this??

As I said, I can't see "twinkies" being anything like a fairy cake looking like a fish finger, but that's what they are.

Sorry dude, for my entire life the word 'dick' has meant one thing and one thing only. So a spotted dick is only ever going to look like an std to me. These pics and all the explanations in the world don't change that. Its a cultural thing.

freedomdwarf1 -> RE: Really stupid sayings, phrases and names. (12/14/2016 2:58:09 PM)

And I see twinkies as young teen guys getting their rocks off - not fairy cakes.

It's not cultural - it's lack of enlightenment and respect for tradition.
Can't please everyone.

Seriously dude - some internet person you've never met and never will doesn't associate with a food they've never eaten and probably never will, from a culture they aren't in and never have been, and therefore you feel disrespected.

Its really nothing to get your twinkies in a twist over.

FR

In my corner of the globe (itself a goofy expression), folks have taken to discussing events and weather in the "The DMV," by which they mean the District (of Columbia), Maryland, and Virginia. [8|]

It might be passable with "The."

And fairy cakes...wtf are fairy cakes? twinkies, young teen guys, fairies, is there a running theme here? Because I am beginning to think that we would be better off sticking to spotted dick.

Well, it was pretty traumatic when they nearly vanished forever.

More seriously, on this side of the lake, twink is gay slang for an attractive young dude. It can often, though not always, also suggest that said dude is an example of the classic old-queen appraisal: "Nothing upstairs but what a staircase."

Now I need to get some Twinkies at 7-eleven tomorrow.
