This is a genuine conversation that we're having. A debate. Do cats vomit? I mean, as a rule. A general rule. Not a hairball, but...vomit. That they leave on the floor. For you to pick up. (Or for the dog to eat.) This poll is not meant for Americans because Awareness contends that American cats are genetically inferior. That is his argument. Really.

Our cat has never vomited - even when she eats grasshoppers and grass. In fact, I can't ever remember her throwing up a fur-ball either. She is just about 18 months old now; but she is a Savannah (F4). My stepdaughter has a cat that has vomited several times and left her the mess to clear up. Her cat is about one month younger than ours and her cat is a standard heinz57 black moggie. Interestingly, both cats eat the same food (we shop together and buy the same stuff for our cats). [ETA: both cats are indoor house cats, they are never let out to roam freely] Maybe the lineage makes a difference?? [sm=dunno.gif] A Savannah is a Felix Libicus (related to the big cats); your standard moggie (most common cats) is a Felix catus.

As to the question, well I have had or lived with people who had cats on and off for most of my life and yes of course cats do vomit. They are not some magical pukeless creature, they are just mammals like any other and thus they vomit. They vomit when they are sick, when the food doesn't agree with them, when they are very upset, when the food tastes too good and they gorge themselves, and sometimes for no reason we could determine.

Too true. And they have a remarkable gift for holding their vomit until they've crossed the bare floors that make up most of the apartment and reached a rug. Still, I love my feline master. [:)]

They vomit when they are sick I can't remember either cat ever being sick or even 'out of sorts'. when the food doesn't agree with them Hmmmm... same food all round. Both cats even have the same food/water bowls bought from the same retailer. when they are very upset Her cat lives in a 3rd floor apartment, so never goes out and never sees anything to get upset about. We have a garden so ours goes out on her tethered lead every day for 10-15 minutes (weather permitting). Ours hates all the other local cats. If she sees them through the kitchen window, she yowls, scowls, growls and paces up and down the window sill and head-butts the window until they've gone. If she's outside on her lead, she'll attack them like hunting prey. She's almost caught a couple of them even though they've had a 20+ foot head start on her - she ain't no slouch! So you could say she does get 'upset' quite frequently. But she's never puked whereas her moggie has several times. when the food tastes too good and they gorge themselves Interestingly, neither cat has ever gorged on their food that I can remember - even their fave stuff. I guess it's because the food is always there for them whenever they want it and there is no competition. sometimes for no reason we could determine We don't know why her moggie pukes and ours doesn't. Especially when you consider that both cats lead similar lives, are of similar age and eat the same food at the same time of day. ETA: I just read that sometimes, a vomiting cat could be infected with worms which are often caught by ingesting an infected flea whilst grooming or other small mammal that outdoor cats catch and eat. Compare our cats with those of our immediate neighbour. She has 5 cats. All have had at least one litter before being 'done'. All are outdoor free-roaming cats. She is forever complaining that her cats puke a lot, throw up fur-balls frequently, and each one has had to visit a vet at least once in the last couple of years through some illness or other. Meh. Cats are weird creatures.

I got five aging cats. Four 16 yr old. One 19 yr old. I find that, when they got gastric, they vomit. Like if I allowed their food bowl to go empty for a period of time. I feed them everyday, so it never goes empty for more than 24 hours. But sometimes I am doing some weight control, so I feed less. But they'll vomit. My cats all are free fed since kittens. So they seem to like to nibble a few kibbles here and there constantly throughout the day. So if their food bowl is empty by 6pm. They will have to wait next day 9am or something to get food again. Then vomiting starts. But anyway, my cats never get sick and have lived so long, so I know whatever I am doing is working, I am not concern with their vomiting at all. All these cats, I had them all since their ears were smaller than their heads. and they were smaller than my palm and I used milk bottle to feed them, and even gotta stimulate them to poo when they were little. So cute! The vomiting increased alot when they are old, I think because older and weaker digestive problems. Technically, the first 10 years of their lives, I barely got to deal with any vomiting. Also, my old cats are kinda gross sometimes, they vomit the kibble out, and all the kibbles would be in whole kibbles, it looks like they just swallow without chewing. And then eat them again. I just leave them be, since, it's freshly eaten kibble, vomit out and re-consumed. If it helps them digest better. Whatever works. I am not a believer of wet food because I believe they cause tooth decay and tooth decay is no joke in cats. Anyway, I now got the years behind me to prove my theory right. Cats can live long lives perfectly fine without falling sick on kibbles. Just need to choose a good brand with good ingredients. Not the basic Whiskas or Friskies crap, that will kill your cat in 7 years. I've many others cat not lived beyond 7 years because they feed that. Always kidney or liver failure for death reasons. It has to be a food with higher protein content than carbo content. Make sure proper protein is the first ingredient. My eldest cat died at 14 yr old, and I am blaming my tiny year of experimenting with raw meat diet with her for that problem, she loves the raw though. Although I imported vitamin mix from Canada to make this supposingly highly nutritrious raw mix, by grinding a whole fresh and uncooked chicken, natural bones and all. But I don't know. It was alot of work. But in the end, I don't believe in the benefits.

I lost alot of white clothes because of that, as I can't get the stain off. Yea they do love to vomit on fabric. Definitely floor rugs too. Well, I have had three cats in my life and each one of them vomited at least enough for me not to raise an eyebrow too much when it happened. Sometimes, the reason is obvious. Like when I find gift wrap ribbon mixed up in the mess. You know, that curly, ridged, plastic stuff we wrap around packages? It's cat crack. I suppose they must find it irresistible to ingest. It's just something I accepted and never thought about, I guess, until he moved in with me and told me that cats in his country aren't as vile. (He's not quite serious, of course. I was joking with him and laughing when I made that original post.) I suppose it's a good thing I no longer have my dog. I'm sure Australian dogs never eat poop out of the cat's litter box. Then I would have had to come here and have that discussion, and no one wants to talk about that. :)

All regular (without an abnormality) cats have the ability to vomit... some of them do some of them dont. This is a bit like "do canadian women hold their "lips open to pee" PS an observation that dogs eat faeces, given open opportunity wether it be from cat litter, diapers, oh and they will eat their own vomit, and cat vomit too

With the exception of the last four years, I've had cats in my life since I was nine years old (I'm 52½, now). I never knew any of my cats to over-eat. It's one of the reasons I *still* believe cats to be smarter than dogs (although don't you DARE say anything derogatory about my Puppy). I would never "keep" an outdoor cat. All of my cats were required to be house cats. So, there was never any issue of them eating anything "funky". By the same token, cats eat grass when their stomach is upset (sort of like us, taking Pepto Bismol©™). So, my cats weren't able to do that and make themselves sick. All that as a preliminary, I never had a cat that threw up anything but a hairball more often than once a year or so unless they were really sick. My poor Misty starting throwing up and was dead, two days later. If you're concerned, get your cat to a vet. If it's not that often, just give them some room and lovin'. Michael

FYI, cats are able to vomit. However, horses are not. If they are in intestinal distress, you try to push it through by pouring oil and/or whiskey into them. If that doesn't work, then it's surgery.

All cats vomit. The frequency depends on many factors. Ms Karma is a very small cat and timid, with nervous disposition, so she can hurl 1-2 every 1-3 weeks and she loves hurling up on a freshly laundered bed. Ms Kali is the devil cats I’ve only seen her hurl up 1-2 per year or so Mr Kasper, spawn of Satan, 2-4 times per year. I can’t speak for them when they go outside. But if its frequently –or the frequency of it changes - then that should always be run by the vet. When they get older this can increase substantially – but you can, or eventually, find it’s mainly water as their eating has decreased. This is my second lot of three cats – I should only have the one but the universe clearly has other ideas. So for those 6 all have, plus another 2 I looked after for a bit…so 100% from a poll of 8 cats. i was unable to pick any of your poll options this one being the closest to my pick All cats vomit.
