Trump: Gaslighting, or Self-Deception? The insistence on silly "alternative facts"


Yep--The Donald is trying to convince us what we're seeing isn't so.

So, ignoring obvious and plentiful evidence, Trump and his staff keeps insisting his inauguration was the largest attendance ever. Using "alternative facts" just looks silly. Reports are saying The Donald was furious.

Add now insisting on an investigation to explore the clearly ridiculous claim (no evidence offered at all) that he won the popular vote because millions of people voted illegal, despite no indication that's remotely true. That investigation is doomed before it starts.

So this is actually a serious question.

I'm wondering, is his self-aggrandizement so great that he's desperately trying to convince himself he's that popular?

Or is this stubborn gaslighting, hoping that if he says it often enough, people will stop believing actual facts and their own eyes? If it's is, it's not working -- only 7% of Americans polled believe his obviously false claim.

Is he really that fragile, as reports from his staff seem to indicate?

Or is this an elaborate con?

Or perhaps you have another (serious) possibility to pose?

Sometimes I think he was blackmailed into running for president by Putin and the guilt is forcing him to self-destruct.

I think the answer to your core question is "yes": a lot of the tantrums and bullshit since November (of which this drivel about an unprecedentedly yuge turnout for the inauguration) seem to be down to somebody being so painfully narcissistic and insecure that they have a real chip on their shoulder about being appointed by the electoral college rather than winning the popular vote.

(The fact that the poor fragile narcissist is trying to ease his butthurt by rewriting reality a la Goebbels is a whole other matter, and one that's a lot more worrying.)

Yes, I looked at it, did you zoom and look down the mall, and the side streets, its pretty sparse. As would be expected, everyone moved up. but not too far down that mall it is nearly empty. And you cant tell how many there were protesting.

Those narcissistic tantrums are a practiced act now but they are easily inspired, because this is who he is.

They are the only entertaining thing about him. Yet they are dangerous, because they distract so many while he does seriously dangerous things out of sight. Like a perfomer doing a magician's trick.

Of all the fake news media outlets, CNN probably did the most to get President Trump elected with their ridiculously transparent over-the-top bias. I really love how President Trump forced the media's hand, got them to reveal their true nature - and now their credibility lies in smoldering ruins

I think the problem is even deeper than that now. As all accomplished propagandists insist, it's Extremely dangerous to start believing your own line. Only the manipulated or fools believe, the serious people have to know how they are spinning things to remain aware of the reality they have to maneuver in. Trump is now as much a victim of Reality TV as the mass of Americans who now have lost perspective on any reality outside their TV screen, or whatever someone says that they Want to be true. God Help America!
The skill set and techniques of the Big Lie long used by political agitators and revolutionaries was perfected for modern times and media by Big Tobacco, moved to the Digital Age by Big Oil employed Climate Deniers and the Neo-cons and is now the playbook of the RNC and it's illegitimate but wholly predictable Alt-Right progeny on Social Media. Anything someone Wants to believe, Will be posted, and repeated. All the Socialist Media (cough) is actually owned and managed by quite cynical mega rich owners who are well to the Right individually. They can't Get competent journalists to man the businesses if they mess with reports of reality too much. Like post on the crowds watching the inauguration, most adults can count, most of national working journalists have been to all recent inaugurations, and stupid posts Will be challenged. I think it says all that needs to be said about our current Alt-rght and Trump in general if you are instantly socialist or unpatriotic of you fact-check Anything. People of all political leanings who value honesty, both social and internal, understand there is an objective reality outside the echo chambers of captive audiences.
