There is another statute, TCA 36-2-304, which is still on the books that makes it clear that when a child is born to a married woman, the child is presumed to be that of her husband, she notes.
"So, the repeal of the law does not de-legitimize a child conceived by insemination and, to be honest, the law that will remain on the books is less intrusive into the relationship of a husband and wife than the statute being repealed. Unlike the law being repealed, the remaining law that will now govern the situation does not have the government inquiring into the means by which the couple's child came into existence or whose sperm, the husband's or a donor's, was used."...

so rather than a "microcosm" of the GOP, I see a prime example of a partisan hack.
First of all, in my life, quite the contrary, it has been the religious that have been virulent.
The Senate passed the first bill, 63-37, which would have made it legal for the Federal government to spend Federal money on embryonic stem cell research that uses embryos left over from in vitro fertilization procedures.[7] On July 19, 2006 President Bush vetoed this bill. The second bill makes it illegal to create, grow, and abort fetuses for research purposes. The third bill would encourage research that would isolate pluripotent, i.e., embryonic-like, stem cells without the destruction of human embryos.
During Bush's second term, in July 2006, he used his first Presidential veto on the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act. The Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act was the name of two similar bills, and both were vetoed by President George W. Bush and were not enacted into law.
Obama in an EO allowed NIH and others funding for embryonic research. Suits were filed against and failed.
Since then:
Now, President 'elect' Donald Trump may curtail funding for embryonic stem cell research. Trump himself has said he opposes abortion, a related issue. (why am I not surprised ?) Tom Price, his nominee to head the Department of Health and Human Services, has opposed embryonic stem cell research on moral grounds because embryos are killed during production of the cell lines.
NOTE: What is used in research is a culture that consists of about 150 cells and in now way represents any viable chance for life. What is used, can't feel, has no circulation and is simply not and cannot ever be...a human being.
A bill filed by a Tennessee Republican aims to make children born through artificial insemination illegitimate.
WMC reported that state House Representative Terry Lynn Weaver is sponsoring HB 1406 to repeal Tennessee current statute, TCA 68-3-306, which declares that children born through artificial insemination are the "legitimate" child of the mother's husband.
The text of the new bill says it immediately "repeals statute that deems a child born to a married woman as a result of artificial insemination, with consent of the married woman's husband, to be the legitimate child of the husband and wife."
That means repeal the existing law making such a child...NO LONGER legitimate. NO spin allowed.
