tweakabelle -> The "Silent Majority" strikes again! (3/11/2017 9:44:28 PM)

Right wingers frequently claim to represent the "silent majority" of voters. RM has often asserted that the "silent majority" of Aussies support the overtly racist far right populist Pauline Hanson and her One Nation party.

This claim was put to the test again yesterday in an State election in Western Australia, a resource rich sparsely populated State that ought to be fertile territory for Hanson's brand of populism. Think an Aussie version of Texas and you won't be too far wrong.

Despite high hopes, ambitious boasts and riding high in the opinion polls for much of the campaign, Hanson's mob only attracted its usual desultory showing and failed to win any lower house seats, (they were hoping for a handful and holding the balance of power) and are projected to win one or two upper house seats. A preference swapping deal with the Liberals (our conservatives) proved toxic for both parties. The inevitable infighting among the various ratbags and nutcases that One Nation offered as candidates was seen very negatively by voters also. And Hanson's policies failed their first serious examination by the media and electorate.

Once again the Australian electorate has decisively rejected the politics of hate, racism and division, this time by a margin of over 90%. RM's delusion that his brand of racist hate politics is shared by the "silent majority" proves to be just another of figment of his imagination. The centre-left Labor Party won in a landslide of historic proportions.

Recently the right wing populists movements have made great gains in Europe and the USA. Could this be the point where opinion is turning, shifting decisively against those bigots? Let's hope so. One Dear Leader Thump in the world is one Dear Leader Thump too many.

By all the million gods tweaks, I am hoping like hell that something similar ( or worse for hanson) happens in Qld, but for some reason I have my doubts. Maybe there are just more 'Rooineks' in this state but the number that I talk to that want to kiss hanson's ass, depress me terribly. I LOVED the result in W.A. and yes 'norespectatall' I am and always have been a red-ragging labour-supporter and (horror of horrors ) , I was even a union secretary !!!! Do what you will with that and when you are finished, you can shove it where the monkey shoves his nuts.

One really good side effect of the WA election is that any hopes of nationwide alliance or preference swapping deal between One Nation and the Liberals (our conservatives for non-Aussies) were demolished. The deal they arrived at in WA proved toxic for both parties so it won't be repeated anywhere I would imagine.

Hanson's deal seems to have been interpreted by the electorate as "just another underhand tactic" of the kind associated with the major parties. It really tarnished Hanson's 'outsider' image and consequently she lost her appeal with voters disenchanted with the major parties.

The level of infighting between the various One Nation candidates, and the quality of those candidates, many of whom seemed to be on day release from the funny farm was instructive also. The previous incarnation of One Nation fell apart due primarily to infighting among the various ratbags and nutcases that are attracted to populist movements as soon as they gain a bit of ground, and this version, dubbed Hanson Mark 2.0, seems just as prone to infighting as the previous incarnation.

So there's a lot to be optimistic about IMHO.

Onya tweaks, let's all wait for the implosion similar to the one that happened last time *smile*. I just hope it happens before the Qld elections. If she comes knocking on my door, she will be told "I am a wiccan madam, so I surely wish thee no harm, but thou art standing where I am about to shoot this shotgun"

I thought Australiashire was a penal colony of the realm - like Americashire jackal land. Both of these countries wiped an indigenous population to the precipice of extinction itself....I will also include Spainshire jackals in this.

Are people inherently sexist - as a whole - I do not believe this.
Are humans, the majority, racist/homophobic etc - I believe so.

Monty python anyone?
