Our family used to be very active on here years ago and I am just wandering through to see what is new here.

I remember your family. Have enjoyed the posts that your family made very much. Very few people that used to be here are still here. There are a few diehards that still come regularly and a few people who pop in occasionally. The forums are nothing like they used to be.

When we stopped posting the forums seem to be imploding a little and our life started becoming busier.

Speaking of feathered creatures we are getting Rhode Island Red chicks next weekend. Maggie, Alandra and I are busy planning and getting ready. Maggie has had chicks and chickens before but it will be mine and Alandra's first time.

How neat!!! I love my little feathered critters. I call it chicken TV when I sit outside to watch them. It's so very relaxing. I have a great way of keeping the chickens in thawed water in the winter. Simple, easy, and depending on how many chickens you have, mine only needs filled once every 1 1/2 weeks. Has stayed thawed out to -22 F or -30 C.

Would love to hear your idea when you have time. We can get as cold as -40 here and with the windchill it can get even colder. Those days do not intend to last long though. We have miniature horses and we built an insulated box for their water trough but we still have a heater as well.

This was the funniest topic today.

You should join a web site called backyardchickens.com. Tons of great information there about raising chickens as well as other types of birds and farm animals. You can read the arguments for or against adding heat to a coop during the winter, what to feed, how big a coop to make, etc.

To make a great winter waterer, use a tote (mine is 10 gallons) I bought from Walmart, horizontal nipples you can purchase from ebay (not the vertical ones), and a stock tank deicer that is safe to use in plastic. Drill holes in the side of the tote near the bottom for the nipples, put a hole near the top for the cord of the deicer. Since you get so much colder than we do you might need to think about insulating your tote which I don't do. If you do insulate it you'll have to figure out a way to cover the insulation so the chickens won't eat it. You just need to set the tote up so the nipples are about beak high. My girls learned to use the nipples within hours. They are really rather smart.

The first year we used the tote for winter water, the house sitter had to take a 5 gallon bucket outside to refill it. This last year I had a frostless faucet installed. I just hook a hose up to it, fill the tote, disconnect the hose, and I'm done.
