As some of you know, I am a gun loving gun nut.

At present I own 3 7.62 Assault style rifles, a bushmaster, an M1A1, and a smith and wesson.
One 308 remington 700 and one model 700 in 338 magnum
Two remington pump shotguns, security style
a 45 acp 1911, 40 smith and wessen, 44 magnum ruger
An antique WW2 issue german mouser in 8mm

And as for NFA (full auto capable) I am restoring a 1919 30 cal belt fed and a venerable BAR.

I also happen to own 3 multi fuel former military trucks, a deuce, and 2 6 bys.

One of the 6 bys has a 38 foot command van on it, which I have been converting to a camper.

Here is my puzzle.

An acquaintance has a full kit Dragunov pre ban sniper rifle, and by full kit, I mean the cleaning kit, original soviet scope, 4 mags, everything a guy could possibly want.

He is willing to trade straight up for the command van 6x.

Now, the values are about equal.

The Dragunov is not the best sniper rifle ever made, it has its quirks, and to be honest, my M1a and both bolt actions are superior weapons.

The only appeal the weapon has is that it is what my counter parts used during my stint in the army.....

So do I

If you're sure that the gun and the converted van are of equivalent value, would you find it it harder to replace the van than to buy a Dragunov elsewhere? That's what it comes down to, I'd have thought.

The Dragunov is no longer imported due to some anti gun legislation.

As far as the former military truck, they are a dime a dozen, even with the multi fuel engines.

You admit that the weapon really hasn't all that much appeal to you. You have put some work into turning the van into a camper. You have a little one living with you who would probably think it's really neat to go camping in military vehicle you have turned into a camper. I say keep the van.

Of course, this advice is coming from someone who is not highly into guns of any sort. To me they are needed if they serve a purpose. I would never get a weapon just to say I have it.

Yes, I am crazy about feathered creatures. I have a dozen chickens, 3 ducks, 5 geese, and 2 parakeets.

Revise that number. Just got 14 new chicks and 5 turkeys.

As I said, the appeal is that it is a weapon specifically designed as a sniper rifle, and in that was my job in the army, that is its appeal.

That and thanks to the liberal anti gun morons, it is now rare as virgins in a public high school.....

As for the fishing with the munch monster....

A fishing trip with him consists of drowning warms since the 'be quiet so you dont scare the fish' means him yelling every time he sees something that grabs his interest.

But I am keeping the truck, since it was pointed out that I use it on field days with the local ham club.
I havent caught a fish in the time since we got him back from the cps gestapo (two months after the judge awarded custody to his grandmother!)

Mouser manufactured a number of the rifles for export to Turkey, with Turkish military stamps on them prior to issuing the license for Turkey to make them in country.

Hell, for the longest time the damn things were so plentiful you could buy them at a Woolworth's for $99 bucks.

You're dating yourself. I can't even remember how long it's been since Woolworth closed.

Which one will fit in your coffin when you die? (Neither, well, the gun might but when your children cause you to turn over in your grave it's going to be uncomfortable). Which one will you treasure more before you go? Which one will bring the most resale or a remembrance of you when left in your will? You can drive the vehicle or presumably fire the weapon. Which one would you rather do for fun? I've never been one to hang anything on the wall. I have four "brown guns" from "fine" to "very good" circa 1800's in different calibers and shoot them all. Boils down to what trips your trigger and gives you personally the biggest bang.
On a side note, I applaud and support your dedication to the shooting sports but were you really surprised when ATF showed up asking about the fuel/ nitrates given your "collection?"
