I am truly sorry to hear about this. I always enjoyed reading your stories about Kera, and I could tell how attached you were to her. I am glad to hear that Blu is safe.

He will also help put a jump barrier on the fence which means adding another 3 foot high section of fencing angled back toward the yard.

While he says that is not actually required, he feels it will aliviate some of my concerns since we still have not figured out how in the hell they got out in the first place. The gate is padlocked, they cant dig under the fence, and there are no holes in the fence anywhere. And while blue might be able to force his way through the grid of the hog wire, kera was way to large to attempt it, she could not even get more than her nose through the squares.

This is a good idea, and can resolve what is very possibly what aided Kera and Blu's escapes in the first place. I used to have a lab that always got out of our fenced yard, which had 4 feet tall chainlink. I finally built a pen with 8 feet tall chainlink, and was stunned when within 5 minutes of putting him in it, he was at the front door barking. When I took him back out to the pen and watched to see what happened, I was amazed to see him literally put paw over paw and climb over and out of the pen. I searched around on the internet and saw this as a solution, and did it will chickenwire, only about a foot wide. It did the trick. No more climbing out. He was able to climb to the top of the fence, but he couldn't maneuver backwards then over to get past the chickenwire.

Between him and his sister (who climbed trees) I learned a lot about animal's abilities that I had been previously unaware of, and how there is almost no stopping a dog determined to get out. That was several years ago. He is gone now, and I still miss him a lot. So I will be thinking about you and Kera. She always sounded like an amazing companion.

My Pointer could easily jump or climb fencing. I had to add a top layer like that as well. And bury rocks along the bottom. And put locks on the gates (he actually figured out how to lift the gate off its hinges. He would go around nudging the fence with his nose and paws, looking for weaknesses. He's too old now, and fixed, but the first year was a real struggle. Getting him fixed, and taking him on long runs along side my bike helped with his wanderlust urges. Didn't help my bones any, too many times he and a chipmunk ran one way, my bike and I flew another.

Jeff, I hope you hold close the fond memories of your companion, and find a new one when the time is right.
I'm glad you have found the one missing.

Kera got out of the yard this evening and was hit by a car and killed down on the road.

She had not been outside long and somehow managed to find a way out.

Blu, the pocket pit rescue also got out and we are still trying to find him.

Mmm.....so sad....dude....sooooo sorry :(

This has brought to mind the shepherd we had as a kid, taught himself how to open door knobs.
And I've known horses who could undo the latches on their stall from the inside and would follow that up by opening the other stalls. They enjoyed large parties, I suppose.

I just wanted to apologize to Jeff for my cruel & inflamatory statements regarding the loss of your dog. I see from reading what everyone said about how you cared for it, it must be difficult. Anyways, just wanted to say i was sorry for my reaction towards you.

Oh, Jeff, I'm so sorry. I know how much Kera meant to you. I honestly don't know what to say. There's nobody on this planet that could have loved her more. How is the munch monster taking it?

I am glad that you got Blu back.

Munch monster did not take it well at all.

We also have witnesses who saw her get hit and said the pickup that hit her left the pavement to do so, unfortunately, no one got a license number.

I say unfortunately because under the State cruelty to animal laws, intentionally hitting any animal with a vehicle is a felony with a 2 year minimum sentence, and if it is a dog with a collar and tags (which she had) the minimum goes to 2.5 to 5 years, with a major fine.

I placed Kera next to the grave of the 14 year old "alpha mom" we lost a few years ago that mothered Kera when she first arrived. She is under a nice tree and to insure that she is undesturbed, I placed some extremely heavy outdoor ceramic tiles over the grave.

There is also a statue of my mother's favorite saint near there, St. Francis.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss😔

It's a really nice way to give your dog such a lovely final place to rest😊
