What on earth will M and Q and M.P. do now that their handsome SIS Officer has gone to the land of perpetual darkness and silence in the village of Rotting Dean?

I loved watching The Saint when I was younger but I always thought Roger Moore got screwed when it came to how silly the plots seemed for most of the Bond movies he did. The Man with the Golden Gun was not only his first but also probably his best. I mean...seriously...Moonraker? [:'(]

RIP Roger. Your fans knew you were better than the scripts you got.

He also starred in the British TV series Ivanhoe in the 1950s. For a child of the South London Suburbs were the g at the end of the word is replaced by a k or missed out completely, he had great diction and a rather posh old Etonian type accent.

Sean was my favourite then Roger Moore - I think all the rest have been rubbish.

Roger Moore was much maligned as James Bond.

He played it firmly tongue in cheek and was good at doing that. We now prefer a more realistic James Bond so find him very old-fashioned now, but he did what he did well.

If you want to see him at his best watch "The Man Who Haunted Himself" - a cult classic.

Well like you he is a jocky shorts George my old Glaswegian Queen of Spades.

Always thought Roger Moore did James Bond, as written, much better than anyone else. Suave, debonair and understated ruthlessness.

Sean Connery is as sexy as hell, but he definitely isn't suave.

And remember watching the Saint as a kid - I think in black-and-white. Very cool.

That white Volvo, though . . . so hip.

Some guy in my old neighborhood had a white 1965 and a burgundy 1967 Volvo 1800s (the latter might have been originally wine red + 30 years of sun, not sure).

Before Volvos turned all rectangular and pointy-cornered in the mid-'70s. As though Simon Templar all a sudden got a job as a branch manager and moved to the 'burbs or something.

That's why he ultimately had to leave them behind and change to speed boats and spaceships.

The real world of spies or Intelligence officers is one of bordom, long hours and bloody low pay.

I thought Sir Roger Moore as the best possible to follow Sean. I did like Pierce Brosnan though and do enjoy Craig.

Say it ain't so.

I thought TV and movies were supposed to show it's what it's really like.

He was a perfect choice. But I think the people behind the Bond movies have done a pretty good job picking the actors generally. I'm not really disappointed with any of them. If I ever have an objection, it usually involves the story line, the stunts, or the gadgets just getting too unbelievable.

Edwird -> RE: Struth Governor James Bond is Dead! (5/31/2017 2:09:30 PM)

But the gadgets and the "too unbelievable" parts were half the fun, IF done in whatever way we deemed to be entertaining.

I lean towards the Connery (actor playing the character) version, but like you, I'm not disappointed in any of the actors. The last three or so Connery episodes were about as silly as it gets in the "too unbelievable" department. (Except for Diamonds Are Forever, where they toned it down a bit.)

Monty Norman composed the deep (though very trebly) guitar riff in E minor forever associated with 007, but . . .

The two favorite opening music themes, from this corner:

Goldfinger

People have no idea the difficulty of any singer trying to keep up with the intensely counter-intuitive modulation occurring in this song, but Shirley Bassey sang right through it, not a note wrong, like she didn't even notice. Phenomenally strong inflection and meaningful voice, while at it.

You Only Live Twice

Nancy Sinatra was no Shirely Bassey, to be sure, but the Goldfinger theme was about the bad guy. This is the other side of the coin. Cool, calm and collected Bond.

I just recently finished a "the saint omnibus" and I had a difficult time seeing roger moore in the pages of the book. perhaps because his bond images are so firmly planted in my mind.

Having read the books before JFK announced that he was a fan of them and jump-started the 007 phenomena, I always thought that George Lazenby was the movie Bond most like the Bond portrayed in the original books. Plus I appreciated that he did a lot more of his own stunts than most other Bond actors. On the other hand, Daniel Craig has always struck me as more like a villain from the original books than as Bond himself.

I generally avoid spy movies because they will be one of 2 things.

1 boring

or

2 unbelievable
.

If it is not boring, it isn't real.

That's because Shirley Bassey is a certified badass with righteous vocal kung-fu. [:)]

Well, I've never read any of the books so I can't say but I've always considered On Her Majesty's Secret Service to be one of the better Bond movies from the early days.

However, I think Roger was tops at delivering those unique, cutting one-liners that are so "Bond". The best being from The Man with the Golden Gun when he tells Maud Adams that he'd hate to see her get shot by a golden bullet "because they're very expensive". [:D]
