Allaryse -> Tips how to make flogger handles? (7/26/2006 7:57:38 PM)

I have just started making floggers and I see many of the braided handles that are most pleasing to look at. I have been wrapping the tails with material that is similar to the tails but it does not look as professional or clean. I would very much appreciate any advice I might receive or pictures that might give me some indication on where to start. This link shows the type of handles I am looking to mimic; http://www.wian-studios.com/floggers-medium.html They look so professional and mine have turned out looking like the dog's breakfast in comparison! Thank you. Allaryse.

Different leather artisans do it different ways. These are techniques that take practice, practice and more practice. I've seen some of Master Archer's floggers that he made 10+ years ago and they also look like a dogs breakfast.

My suggestion is to purchase a copy of Encyclopedia of Rawhide and Leather Braiding. by Bruce Grant. Invaluable!

I make floggers and bondage gear as well, the knots on the top and bottom of the handles are called turks-head knots, you can get books, usually from different companies, usually tanneries, with step by step instructions and diagrams. as far as braiding goes, it's something that some people excell at... and some, not so much but it's also good to experiment. a Jerry stripper is something that you can also buy thrrough tannery catalogs,as well, that runs the leather through a series of blades... and well, if you're clever you can rig something up yourself... but it's probably less frustration to just buy one... they're fairly inexpensive.

good companies would be:

Thank you for the links MsEmily! I make modular polyhedra origami in my spare time so I believe I might have the manual dexterity and patience to do well with braiding. Your advice is most appreciated:) Allaryse

Hi Allaryse,
there havebeen some good advice offered so far to which i would like to add!
I myself make floggers-with and without the braided handles you desire-i havbe succeeded in creating about 16 different patterns so far.
if,as I did you visit http://www.rudedogleather.com/ they are extremely helpful supplying tools and items- including rivets and setters and the jerry`s stripper which is very handy!-ive bought stuff from them and i`m in the uk! if you check their leather craft sections there are basic tutorials for various things on floggers-thats where i started and its easy with a little patience and practice!
good luck and keep at it!

Thank you Ariandom! I have succeeded in learning the mystery braid, three and four cord braids as well as the ending four cord braid. I am very tempted to spend all the money I am making this summer on their helpful leather tools but I'd rather be able to eat for the next eight months at school! Thank you again for your recommendation and the link. Allaryse.
