NYPD Sergeant Charged With Murder In Shooting Of Elderly Woman With Mental Illness Heartbreaking. He followed her into her apartment. She swung a baseball bat at him. He shot her dead. Eight years on the force. What kind of training do police get for dealing with the mentally ill in crises?

Police are not supposed to be mental illness experts. Who says they get any mental illness training at all? Maybe they should, but I guess that whether they do or not depends upon the jurisdiction. However, ALL cops get self-defense training for when they are attacked. The odds are pretty good that if you attack a cop for any reason, you'll end up dead. Cops who did not defend themselves when attacked would be mostly useless.

Unfortunately that's the way it is. They've done worse, shot a guy laying in bed not even moving. And then we got 41 rounds pointed at a guy with a knife. What's the solution, to tell them to just let people hurt and kill them ? There are plenty of unjustified shootings by cops, I am just not so sure this is one of them. A bat can hurt you. In fact it can kill you. T^T

Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) admitted that the sergeant had not followed proper protocol for dealing with individuals suffering episodes of mental illness. He added Barry shouldn’t have approached Danner without the support of officers specially trained to handle such situations.

Vince with the proper health insurance and care that officer most likely would not have been put in that position. I don't care what kind of training a police officer has when faced with a life threatening situation mistakes will be made. I do not believe a police officer should be expected to diagnose mental illness and know the right action to take when confronted with a life or death situation. I will bet you this officer will not be convicted or lose his job...and he shouldn't of even been charged. The real people to blame are those that make treatment too expensive for those that need it most. Butch

Give them the best doctors there are, the best everything, and many of them refuse to take their meds etc Nice that you are able to diagnose the exact issue from so far away though Perhaps you should seek help yourself

And then when she killed or injured a civilian you would have wanted his head for that, it isn't like he can pull it out of his back pocket. And how do you know if she was trying to kill him.
