I guess I don't spend enough time in P&R to grasp the intent of the original post. I can't say I share the view of the OP. None of the posters that we have from the UK have impressed me in such a fashion. Maybe I'm missing it.

an excellent book and a great movie

I have to admit, I wasn't a big fan of the movie. I tend to believe it's because the depth of the book would have been almost impossible to translate to the screen. Perhaps I should give it another go.

I probably won't explain this well. Depending on the view of the reader, it's a book that can be seen in so many different ways. Of course, it's about what can happen if certain politics could run rampant. However, to certain types of sadists, and perhaps a few masochists, there are certain parts of that book that are darn near porn.

Good as Hurt is, the film doesn't quite work because it was a bit rushed: getting it done in time for release in the April of 1984 was seen as more important than doing a good job of filming it. Have you seen the BBC version from the '50s with Peter Cushing as the lead? A lot of people prefer that one.

Nineteen Eighty-Four is simply a great read unlike your lying drivel. But we should expect no more from a right wing extremist such as your self.

But I will entertain you. Name me one person on this forum, no matter their country, who agrees with your doolally synopsis?
Have you even read the book?

I think the book was more a prophetic warning in nature about the Great Satan, and you lot are just about there.

His job is to rewrite past newspaper articles, so that the historical record always supports the party line remind of you anyone? guffaws

Strange some of you lot I must have also read that one about 15-16.

I haven't seen the BBC version. I do have the inclination that I'll have to add it to my viewing list.

There are a number of people who really don't understand why the film was rushed the way it was, to have a release date set that way. It was specifically set to match the date of Smith's first journal entry. "April 4, 1984."

Yeah, they'd set themselves quite a tight deadline for filming, given that.

The premise is that at some point government (men in power) can become so powerful, monitoring so invasive, and members of society so completely helpless before the powers that be that there would be no recourse if and when really bad people managed to gain control

The most sickening crimes that can be imagined could be routinely committed by that government against everyone living forevermore

The people powerless

History has clear examples of how this happens. It isn't fiction.

Imagine one world government with North Korea's Dear Leader, or Saddam Hussein in charge (Marxists / Nationalist Socialists both).

FR -

How about the 1956 version with Edmond O'Brien, Michael Redgrave, and Jan Sterling?

an excellent book and a great movie that really had little to do with Britain. In fact, I don't think Britain was mentioned once in it, was it ? It was basically about the way nazi Germany was going at that time I believe

Only as a joint nation with North America , having withdrawn from the European union.

It's abit ironic.

You are safe because big brother watches your every move.
You are safe because there is a cop on every corner.
You are safe because we, not you are responsible for your well being.
You are safe because big brother is watching out for you.

Sounds like Singapore ha! I do feel rather safe here and have blind trust of the police, but police here are seriously very nice and friendly here, part of their job is to be polite and friendly when dealing with people, and not to use aggression but diplomacy. But the big issue, back to:

Good Dictator that genuinely from the bottom of their heart does everything putting country first above himself.

OR

Evil Dictator that want to control people for his own benefit.

Could be two very different out comes. It's a lucky draw. We were lucky.

But 1984 was a book I never read because, my brother told me the gist of the story. They made two people who are madly inlove betray each other. Awful stuffs!

Oh and I'm for cameras everywhere, because lately, so many crimes committed, they were able to get street camera images to basically see what happened. Clear video evidence. It was great.

The betrayal was symbolic. The point was that the government knew all about you and thier relationship was unauthorized.

you have to remember that one part of the book stated the 2 + 2 = 5, so it would suit a lot of the duds on here down to the ground.......................and no, I didn't miss an 'e ' out !!

New math 1+1 = eleven.
that was the math my sister learned in school, I had to reteach her math.

I learned "new math" in elementary school in the 60s. Try to keep up.

Anyway, irrelevant to the 1984 example.

Published after the war (1949 about Airstrip One, formerly Great Britain) and the fall of the Nazis but I think a look at a possible future from the extreme right police state in a world of perpetual war.

That gave it a right wing bent as Mussolini would have had it. About the Superstate of omnipresent government surveillance, and public manipulation.

I always thought it was more a critique of Stalin.

It is, just like the other Orwell novel anybody's read. It's probably a difficult concept for the OP to grasp, but a lot of lefties were horrified by what the Soviet Union turned into under Stalin.

Not at all, I remember them explaining the the wrong people were running it.

You really, really need to actually read this book. Or reread, as the case may be.

Before you post anything else ridiculous.
