Never got into the SW scenario for some reason...more of a medieval gal (my main char in Runescape wears Indian silks but has heavy duty armor underneath).

There was quite a bit of science fiction in some of the D&D and AD&D stuff, and I suspect you're dead right that Star Wars was as much of a factor there as Gygax and Arneson both being mad keen on Jack Vance and Michael Moorcock.
They were still doing that stuff as late as the turn of the '90s, in fact:

Hey, at least you never had to create a character under a dm (female) that had it in her head that all aspects of a character had to be generated, ht, wt, penis size (if applicable) which prove funny as hell when a fellow player created a halfling with a 20 inch cock.
