Okay, I finally, after a lot of persuasion, watched the live action 'Ghost in the Shell.'

Here are a few of my observations"

1) the plot is a mashup of the original animated full length movie, and a hunt and pick of plot devices from SAC.
2) The fact that some are speaking English and some are speaking Japanese is fucked up.
3) The major volunteered to be fully prosthetic in the original movies and series
4) Trying to watch the move after watching the originals is not worth the effort.

I can only believe that Scarlett Johansson was blackmailed or somehow coerced into doing this movie, for it is beneath even her worst efforts.

It's as bad as the live action Aeon Flux, then?

I liked Aeon Flux, now I have to dust off my old CD player and find the movie to watch again; just to see what's up with the bad press.

The problem with the live action Aeon Flux movie is that they tried to condense the entire series into one feature film AFTER the underwriters announced that they would not do a series of feature films that either combined various episodes of the animated series or expanded on those episodes.

Which I am beginning to think may be what happened with Ghost in the Shell.

In the original animated feature, the villian was a cybernetic life form known as the puppet master who, at the end of the movie, merged with the major.

Everything after that is built on that initial plot.

The major's back story is that she was in an airplane crash, and lost her parents, but chose to get a prosthetic body.

Kouzay, the anti hero in the second season of SAC was also a survivor, and during the series, the major found both her first body and his.

Blending him and the puppet master basically kills the entire premise of the series.

What is worse, is that there are three other anime series in the initial stages for going to live action, including Captain Harlock, space pirate, and none of the series is slated for more than one feature.

George Lucas was, at one time, in negotiations for Ghost in the Shell, as well as a few others.

James Cameron, Ridley Scott and Tim Burton have all tried to purchase the rights to a number of the popular Anime movies and series.

There's a lot of manga series that probably would boil down to a single film just as neatly as Akira or Barefoot Gen did, though. They've probably got a much better shot at doing a decent job of Captain Harlock in two hours than they have of some of the more elaborately plotted stuff like Robotech or the thing about the half ferret ninja. Hell, they made some great films by massively simplifying and streamlining Lone Wolf and Cub (and there's what, thirty volumes of that?) back around the turn of the '80s.
(I'd love to see a live action Black Lagoon, myself, but even if they did that, I doubt it'd be released over here, sadly.)

Ahh, without any expectations based off the series (didn't know there was one) I was able to enjoy the movie.

The earlier animated film of GITS was a big factor in the start of the second wave of interest in anime in the 'States, I'm told. It led to a lot more stuff getting translated and was a sort of gateway drug in the same way as Akira had been a few years before. That does raise the bar very high for remakes or sequels, even if the new film isn't the Japanese equivalent of Stallone's (shitawful) Judge Dredd...
