I remember visiting Holy Loch in Scotland, the site of a US submarine base, and during the Cold War a primary target for Russian nukes. When we asked the locals if they had been concerned that they were on the front line of any nuclear war, they were pretty sanguine about it. They thought that they would perish in the first minutes of a nuclear conflict, so they wouldn't have to hang around slowly dying of radiation poisoning amid the ruins of the world they once knew.

That's one way of looking at it ... I suppose ...

Dour sods, the Scots, aren't they? [;)]

Well if your diet was cow stomach and your knees froze in the winter, you would be a dour chap as well. Not great times to look forward to, breakfast and winter. Teach them to make a proper English breakfast for starters, you imperialists, you have owned them long enough, that you could give them some of the secrets.

The reason governments want everyone in an underground bomb shelter is so that any survivors won't have to spend all their energy cleaning up and burying bodies. If everyone dies quietly buried in their underground shelter it will also serve to prevent pandemic disease that normally follows mass deaths.

Interesting theory, worth considering.

I remember a small book and the movie that was made of it, called 'The War Game' ............it was in black and white and very stark and in one scene a map of Great Britain was shown and then little marks were stuck on it to show possible targets, like army-bases, RAF bases, large airports, etc.,etc.,etc. I'm sure you get the idea. I was watching the movie in the local cinema with my ( then) wife and she said, "We'll be safe, won't we ? We're right out in the country." So I pointed out that we were right in the centre where a big blob of those dots joined up over, Heathrow Airport, Chicksands S.A.C. Base, Ruislip air-base, Northolt RAF base, Ashford army camp, Aldershot army-camp and a regional centre of government and that basically we would , hopefully, go out with a bang, rather than drag it out whimpering. She went a pretty shade of green then and left the cinema.

We were told that if the birds flew ( from Russia in those days), we would get a 4 minute warning of their arrival. I always hoped that if it happened, I would hear that warning while standing at the bar of a fairly decent pub. I could get a pint down in that 4 minutes and then watch the suns rise.

Anyone who hasn't seen it should watch Stanley Kubrick's definitive movie on how easily a nuclear war could begin, "Dr. Strangelove."

'Or, how I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb' *smile*.

I just discovered I still have the paperback version of 'The War Game' here, by a bloke called Peter Watkins. It must be time to read it again I guess.

Beats boiling an egg or running a mile, true enough.

I'm always surprised nobody seems to have put together a big anthology of nuke stories, as far as The War Game goes. The SF magazines were full of the things for years, after all. The late '60s and the early '80s in particular produced shitloads.
