I've seen it coming since the early 90s. The schism isn't healing, it's getting wider. Civil war is what we do here when our beliefs get too far apart. In the last few years we have had secessionist movements in Texas and California, maybe others I'm unaware of. People do have guns here, and even though most gun owners are pretty responsible, if things get far enough apart they'll end up being used. Due to cutbacks in military budgets and the fact that we keep send our National Guard units overseas to fight for extended periods, we don't have sufficient troops in place to quell a real civil war quickly. Events like Charlottesville, of which we have had a great many, are just the opening shots, much like Harper's Ferry in our last civil war, it too was a protest event in its way. Once real hostilities have begun here it wouldn't be hard for another country to take over if they could just move in troops and equipment fast enough. The fact that we have serious widespread drug issues here would just make it harder to mobilize a resistance force that would be very effective. It's not that far-fetched. It's why I own a plane and live close to the Canadian border.

I am not sure that the divisions you talk of are a result of Roe vs Wade. Nor am I sure that prior to recognising womens' right to control their own fertility that the US was " a much more unified nation". I recall serious divisions in the US about Vietnam and civil rights, just to mention two issues. The whole world felt that a truly unifying moment was the election of Obama as POTUS. The election of the US's first black POTUS was sign of all the good things about the US. It was greeted with universal approval and optimism. But the Right reacted to Obama's election with uncompromising hostility and obstruction at every point. The GOP made Congress unworkable with its unfailing opposition to everything Obama sought to achieve. It seems that the divisions affecting the US are down to significant sections of white American unable to come to terms with a black man in the White House. It's no coincidence that Charlottesville has become a flash point. The terrorist incident there was generated by far Right bigotry, xenophobia and hostility towards their fellow black citizens and their determination to turn the clock back to the dark old days of white supremacy. Significant sections of white America still live in the past and seem determined to bring some of the uglier parts of the past back to life. Their failure/refusal to come to terms with today's realities is driving much of the divisions in today's USA.
