I've been a Union man all my life and held a few minor positions a few times. My life would have been hell without the unions and even with them, in some cases, it was still pretty bad. The National Union of Seamen in U.K. springs to mind as being known as possibly one of THE most corrupt in the country, but even then, conditions gradually improved, which would never have happened if it had all been left to the bosses.
When I came to Australia and went to sea here, I found out just how powerful a union could be and the conditions were streets ahead of their U.K.Brethren and it is here, for the first time that I heard the expression, "If you stop fighting for improvement, you start going backwards, because the bosses NEVER stop trying to take things from you." and I'm sorry to say, that is exactly what is happening in Australia today. Between the weak unions and the corrupt unions, the workers rights are gradually being eroded by the Liberal party ( Our version of the G.O.P ) and the Labour Party ( see Democrats) is too busy fighting within the party to worry about it's roots and supporters.

Does anybody remember a song by the 'Strawbs' entitled. "I'm a union man" .............It was meant to be tongue in cheek but then again................ !!!

This one 'sadly'...made me smile.

The dissing got me thinking of those uppity 99%ers who just didn't understand how the great brilliant, swashbuckling, risk-taking [sic] (taxpayer financed 'socialized') free wheeling capitalist, is entitled to bonuses for fraud, racketeering etc., etc. and sadly...walk.

Now that's capitalism beyond 101...but graduate class baby.

Will we here live long enough to go to the funeral ? Will anybody or even everybody, be able to afford it ? I think we may have to have to put it on our credit cards. Wait, that's what FEMA is for right ?

Wow! I thought I was the only one left alive who remembered the Strawbs. Good nostalgia moment there.

I still have at least 4 Strawbs albums on vinyl, eventually will convert them to digital.

For those not familiar with the Strawbs...

Strawbs - Part of the Union

For background, this song was written and recorded during a time when the British economy was suffering from crippling strikes in many industries.
Particularly hard hit were the British coal and automotive industries. That period of widespread strikes had a lot to do with the disappearance of marques such as MG and Triumph, as well as their parent company British Leyland. Mostly due to strikes at parts suppliers such as Stanpart, Girling, and Lucas.
Contributing to the strikes was the fact that by the early 70s wages in Britain had not risen significantly since the end of WWII.

As a nurse I was in a union, and have been in several others.[:)]




Yay for unions.
Many of them are far from perfect, but considering the alternative?

Yay for unions.
I have been a member of do nothing unions, and I am currently a member of a fairly strong union.
My union is far from perfect, but compared to having no union, I appreciate my current union.
