The thing is that the fire problem out west has been basically all summer.

The smoke from at least one fire has caused air quality alerts in Seattle a couple of times, I have a friend living out there posting about it on face book.

And there is nothing to make political about it, just homes destroyed, people evacuated return home, wind shifts and they are evacuated again...

And a lot more area impacted than Harvey.

Of course it does, but it does not make dramatic TV, nor is it a good photo-op, so it gets ignored. I am with you 100% on this one, not only is it more impactful than Harvey, but it happens year after year all over the country (both yours and mine).

fire fighters have a special place in my heart.

Oh me too. I was saved from a car wreck by firemen when I was a child, and have adored them ever since. They are the true heroes of out modern world, not the cops or soldiers. They risk and give their lives purely out of a desire to help people (not laws or governments) in moments of disaster.

Think about it, when you call 911 with a medical emergency, usually it is the firemen who show up first (at least it was in Toronto). When your house is on fire, they are the ones who go into the inferno to try get you (or even your pets) out. When some deer gets it's head stuck in a fence, it is firemen who show up to deal with it. When some kid goes missing in a river, it is the firemen who show up to search the river or fire department divers who search for the body.

I adore firemen, my Fella is one (forestry, and currently in the local volunteer corps) and our most recent boyfriend was one (urban). My ex husband was one. Besides being extricated from the car, I have been saved twice more by firemen when I overdosed (once accidental, once on purpose after my daughter died). They are simply the most selfless and beautiful people ever. Their whole purpose in life is to help others, regardless of the cost to themselves.

To my mind there is no more noble person on earth than one who will willingly enter a burning building to try save somebody they do not, and never will, know.

And that is why I am happily and proudly a hose bunny.

I 84 through the Columbia river gorge is now closed, source

I have driven that road, and I cant see how anyone can fight fires on mountain sides that are almost vertical.

I used to work in the oil patch around Fort MacMurray. I am glad I wasn't there when the fire happened last year. The camp I worked in was North, somI would have been one of the folks who had to get flown out

Yet they try.

And my Fella would have been one of the guys risking his life to fly you out.

Bombing runs with water, and I can't see that doing more than slowing it down.
That and building fire breaks at the top.

That's what my Fella did a lot of, he is a helicopter pilot and so was in demand

I once ran up the "Glen" but I do not expect you pea of brain to understand. You must explain the lick of the fire carnage. E.g How many houses and people did those flames take as it was absolute ignored in the news.

jlf1961 -> RE: Basically ignored (9/5/2017 4:35:05 PM)

Five national news network stories for the entire fire season, the worst in years, and all within the last five days, dont matter that they have been dealing with this all summer, but like the sock that you are, you are full of shit to think it has been covered by more than local stations.
