Does anyone recall a hurricane of this magnitude that has gone up the coast like this before?
Power is now out for close to half a million, I wonder how many will lose power before this is over AND
how long it will be before they re-gain power?
THIS is why people are encouraged to evacuate.
{Especially the very young, the elderly, those with serious medical issues, etc.}

Since Andrew, Florida has had the best emergency response system in place of any state. Jeb took it even further after 9/11, to cover damn near anything that could be thrown at us.

Our state even has its own insurance program, for people that can't get affordable homeowner's insurance because of flood zones & regular hurricanes.

I'm not a fan of Fire Marshall Bill at all. But he's managing the hurricane response better than we've ever seen out of a governor, in any state. But dammit he's too ugly to be on TV this much!

Rubio is talking now, but he voted against Hurricane Sandy relief. I really hope that doesn't bite us in the ass.

Jeb was awesome... he distributed pizza & water in our area.

Yeah.. Rubio and Scott are both doing a bang up job. I hope that the Sandy stunt doesn't come back to bite us because Trump already promised relief.

Your OP rocked. It's hard to prepare for a natural disaster like Irma, even seeing it coming so far out. Looks as if Florida is leading by example

For my part I have nine relatives out of Deltona camping out at my place.
Having a newborn and a teenage in the house at the same time is a bit of craziness. <grin>

We’re OK but there are pillows, blankets, a first aid kit and water in the closet as I write this. The first tornado hit the ground traveling at 35 mph, straight for us. At that speed, we only had 3 minutes warning. It came within a mile of the house. The second tornado touched down a few minutes later and both tornadoes headed for the poor folks in Polk City.

It was an alarming experience. The weather alert apps went off on both our phones at once (see pic). We immediately hit Channel 9 and saw the map with a Tornado 1.5 miles east of our house... and it was heading west straight for us. Luckily it jogged up onto the freeway which is a mile from our house. It was moving at 35 miles an hour. We literally had 3 minutes to take shelter.

We did ok. Got someone's roof shingles and some branches in our yard. But power and cable are on. They only went off temporarily.

Lost a trash can.

We survived a historically large, record breaking hurricane and not one, but 2 tornadoes. And all I got was someone's roofing shingles in my yard to show for it.

Hurricane winds were 107 mph as measured by the weather monitoring station by our house. In our neighborhood we lost 4 fences and TONS of tree limbs. There are 5 foot high piles of debris pilled all over the neighborhood. The retention pond is overflowed and storm ditches have water in them. But we are no worse for the wear.

So, why havent you got everything cleaned up, tree limbs put back on the trees, pumped the retention pond and fed the alligators?

Seriously though, glad you made it through okay.

Friends on Key West said it looks bad on the tv but most of it is cosmetic, the real pounding was some ways up the keys, where another friend is trying to find out if he can claim the rather large boat he found in his drive way as salvage, as well as how the boat got to his drive way in the first place since it was moored behind his house.

He had a couple of windows damaged, lost some shingles but his neighbor's house looks like a total write off, and it was built recently to the new codes, and he lost both his long boards.

FYI, the six friends of mine that stayed on the keys are members of the Monroe county sheriff department, not like they had a lot of choice in the matter.
