I remember Thompson here is always saying it's bullshit that North Korea treats it's people badly.
But here is a true account of their own citizen who escaped. And her family is considered the wealthier ones in there.
So to me, it looks like all North Korean citizens are prisoners of their own country and not permitted to travel unless they are on government business or something.

When I look at the difference between illegals of North Korea who out of desperation, fearing for their lives escape to China. Compared to Mexicans, wanting a better life, escape illegally to US. But Mexican government is not inhumane to their citizens who leave illegally. I think there is even no punishment.
With the North Koreans, if they were returned, they would be put to death. That would be a damn good reason not to return those illegals.
On top of that, although she didn't say much on this subject, but her life was only in danger at China as they would just deport her back.
It sounds like South Korea is accepting any North Koreans who managed to escape and they won't deport them back. Which is freaking great!
I look forward to the North to be destroyed and reunited with the South some day.
Sometimes also, thanks to the corruption in most South East Asian undeveloped countries, that she was able to bribe her way through to safety. It's kinda ironic, corruption helped save some people.
And I am also thinking now, because she is public. She might be on the North Korean Assassination list. Like many other North Koreans who escaped, they need to fear for their lives constantly.
