Now I see the scenes between him and the young girl in American Beauty differently, warranted or not.

A real cynic might wonder if that was why he got cast in that part. Sort of an in joke for those in the know...

You never know. I'm sure it tickled his funny bone to know that most viewers wouldn't get the in-joke.

It was never a secret in Hollywood that Spacey was gay. I suppose we should just all be thankful that Anthony Rapp didn't end up sharing Lester Burham's fate in American Beauty.

I recall the girl in American Beauty was a fantasy of the Spacey character's mid-life crisis and his failing marriage. The rose petaled blond was a cock teasing erotic metaphor who turned out to be a frightened virgin ultimately rejected by the Spacey character. The American Dream was spoiled at its core. I would hesitate to put too much significance in Spacey's role opposite the girl. The story was far too complicated.

Have you ever been so drunk or high that you could not remember what you did? I have been drunk more than a few times, sad but so, but I remember just fine... too fine... especially the head in the pot part. I think people who use memory as an excuse for behavior while intoxicated are lying.
Butch

I have been that drunk; a few times, all but once while in college. Go to a party and wake up somewhere else not having any clue how you got there, or that you even left the party. Luckily, in college, I woke up either back at my dorm room, in a friend's apartment, or back at the campsite (beach party on Key West). The only time I did that while not in college, I woke up in my bedroom (my wife at the time was designated driver). If I did something while 'out,' I have no idea. Typically, though, I just did something stupid and was the butt of jokes for a while.

You can't rape a child while passed out... that is different from assaulting someone when drunk... see the difference I am talking about? So no... I do not believe you could do that and not remember.

Lots of us have been that drunk in our younger days. But I venture to say few or none of us have assaulted a child while that bombed.
It makes me really sad. I thought highly of Kevin Spacey.

JVoV -> RE: Another Piece of Shit (10/30/2017 5:48:41 PM)

I think the apology is fairly disingenuous. And I wouldn't be surprised if we hear more on Spacey in the coming weeks.

I very much dislike that he chose this time to come out as being gay, when that has nothing to do with being a pedophile or a drunk.

Not taking up for Spacey, but he didn't rape anyone.

"Netflix Ending House of Cards After Kevin Spacey Allegations"

quote:

The Netflix show "House of Cards" will be ending after its upcoming season after an actor claimed the show's star, Kevin Spacey, made a sexual advance at him at a party when he was a young teen. Since Anthony Rapp went public with his story, many more people have stepped forward to say that rumors of Spacey's misbehavior had been running rampant for years.

Netflix announced on Monday afternoon that the show would not be continuing. "House of Cards" is the American version of the British show with the same name, and aired its first season on Netflix in 2013. Its sixth (and now final) season will be aired next year.

In the wake of Rapp's allegation, Spacey issued an apology (and said he did not remember the incident as he was drunk) and publicly acknowledged his sexuality for the first time. Spacey was slammed by members of the LGBT community for seemingly trying to shift the narrative away from the fact that he may have assaulted a child to him coming out of the closet.

Others took to Twitter to share that they had heard rumors or were even given explicit warnings to look out for Spacey...

Sick. It's looking more and more that Harvey Weinstein was just the tip of the iceberg.

As a big fan of Spacey, I continue to be disgusted...but unsurprised.
PS I did a lot of stupid stuff drunk, Ive woken in a lot of strange places, with some strange people, and some foggy memories that embarrass me to this day, of course its possible he doesnt remember it, But living around alcoholics, being drunk out of your skulll doesnt change the offense especially for the victim...

Greta75 -> RE: Another Piece of Shit (10/30/2017 7:21:25 PM)

And the revelations continues.
I wonder how many child actors got sexually abused and kept silence because their careers are at stake.

I am very disappointed in Kevin Spacey.
Kevin Spacey is one of the few actors, that I have admired and respected for years.
I thought Kevin held himself to higher standards.

Sad day, and shame on you Kevin.

DaddySatyr -> RE: Another Piece of Shit (10/30/2017 9:32:10 PM)

It heartens me to see that, essentially, we have across-the-board agreement, at least on the main issues (I took a bunch of people off "Hide" temporarily so that I could see if this would occur).

It was no "revelation" to me that Spacey wasn't heterosexual as I have known three people who claimed to have had experiences with him and they ain't female. Spacey has been catching some hell (from all over the place) for trying to "mask his guilt" in this situation by dropping what he thought was a "bombshell".

I'm not gay, but it occurs to me that gay people have been trying to change the perception of "gay=pedophile" for decades and when someone does something like this, it sets back that cause amongst those that are of that mindset.

I'm reminded of a N.J. Governor (Florio? MacGreevey?) who was under indictment for taking a bribe who faced the cameras with a similar statement. "Similar" because he never mentioned his legal troubles; he just insinuated that his sexual orientation was about to be used against him by his political "enemies".

I think it was GLAAD that made a statement that included the sentence: "You don't get to 'hide' under a rainbow umbrella". I think, maybe, we're seeing some progress in this country.

It's about damned time.

First the government becomes a shitshow, now Hollywood... it's like every single American institution out there is imploding.
I wonder if the military is next...

Danemora -> RE: Another Piece of Shit (10/30/2017 10:07:19 PM)

~FRing it~

I was a big Spacey fan. And it breaks my heart to hear that Anthony Rapp had this horrible thing happen to him when he was young. Im the mom of a 13-year-old...so I imagined instantly someone doing to her what Spacey is accused of doing with then 14-year-old Rapp. I dont think Ill ever be able to look at Spacey the same way I used to ever again. Piece of shit is a very apropos statement.

JVoV -> RE: Another Piece of Shit (10/30/2017 10:23:31 PM)

I understand that Anthony Rapp has carried this around for so many years, and Spacey was inappropriate to be sure, but maybe not unreasonably so.

The BuzzFeed article

In Rapp's own words, he had gotten bored at Spacey's party and wandered into the bedroom. Some time later, a drunk Spacey came in. Apparently the party had ended and the other guests had left.
...

Let's pause there. You're drunk and there's an attractive person voluntarily waiting in your bedroom. In that scenario, I think a reasonable person would think they were there for sex, or to rob you.

Current New York law has the age of consent at 17. But what was it in 1986 when this happened? (I looked online, but can't find that info before getting bored)

One more thing worth noting is that age of consent laws are not consistent for straight people and gays in most states. And unless it's been changed recently, a 14yo could get married in the state of New York under certain conditions.

And again, I'm not trying to excuse Spacey's behavior or dismiss what Rapp went through.

But this is much different than sexual harassment & assault in the workplace, or from potential employers, such as Weinstein. And, at least so far, there is only one accuser against Spacey, not the same trail of settlements to keep victims from talking (yet, at least).

Spacey fucked up, but if there's not a pattern of attempting to have sex with underage boys, it very well could have been a huge misunderstanding.

I've been drunk. I was in a band in the 80s and finding an attractive lady in my room was not necessarily unusual (I preferred to invite ladies in whom I was interested back to my room on my own. Damn that road crew! [:D]). However, there were always some questions (from me): "What are you doing here? Who let you in? Why are you here?" presumption doesn't equal a pass for me, either.

When I was growing up in New York, the age of consent was 18 up until the late 70s (like '78 or '79). Keep in mind: New York State and New York City often have "conflicting" laws. When I was growing up, 17 was the age to drive (Full license; not permit) in New York State. In the city, we had to wait until 18. Likewise, it's not impossible to get a permit to carry in New York State, but the Sullivan Laws in the City specifically enjoin you from carrying in the city, even with a state CCW.

I am not aware of any discrepancy between gay or straight ages of consent, but I never really paid much attention. As far as marriage age, I NEVER remember 14, but I remember 16. The "certain conditions" were parental consent or emancipation (no longer legally a minor).

JVoV -> RE: Another Piece of Shit (10/30/2017 10:59:01 PM)

Until the Supreme Court ruled otherwise in 2003 (I believe), there was no age legal to consent to gay sex in several states. Some of those laws are still on the books.

https://www.hrw.org/news/2017/02/14/us-new-york-children-young-14-can-marry

Apparently there was a stink about child marriages earlier this year.

And I fully agree, even if they are waiting in your room specifically to have sex, you don't try to fuck a 14yo, guy or girl.

Well, "gay" sex was illegal in several states up until recently and may still be, today.

Michael

JVoV -> RE: Another Piece of Shit (10/30/2017 11:07:50 PM)

That's my point. Duplicitous laws, and often confusing.

Also, keep in mind that Spacey is from Jersey, where 16 is legal. And you can marry your cousin.
