I understand that Anthony Rapp has carried this around for so many years, and Spacey was inappropriate to be sure, but maybe not unreasonably so. The BuzzFeed article In Rapp's own words, he had gotten bored at Spacey's party and wandered into the bedroom. Some time later, a drunk Spacey came in. Apparently the party had ended and the other guests had left. ... Let's pause there. You're drunk and there's an attractive person voluntarily waiting in your bedroom. In that scenario, I think a reasonable person would think they were there for sex, or to rob you. Current New York law has the age of consent at 17. But what was it in 1986 when this happened? (I looked online, but can't find that info before getting bored) One more thing worth noting is that age of consent laws are not consistent for straight people and gays in most states. And unless it's been changed recently, a 14yo could get married in the state of New York under certain conditions. And again, I'm not trying to excuse Spacey's behavior or dismiss what Rapp went through. But this is much different than sexual harassment & assault in the workplace, or from potential employers, such as Weinstein. And, at least so far, there is only one accuser against Spacey, not the same trail of settlements to keep victims from talking (yet, at least). Spacey fucked up, but if there's not a pattern of attempting to have sex with underage boys, it very well could have been a huge misunderstanding.
