The problem I encounter with the "The bible is the absolute truth" crowd is that if it is not written in the bible, then it not the truth.
...
Again sheer nonsense, the Bible was written to provide us with "truth" about some very specific things and not to provide us with the truth about "everything" and so there is a lot truth out there that is not in the Bible.

Anyway, I almost died a couple months ago and it shook me up. Once again I'm back to wondering if there is a hereafter and with my mother dying a year on Jan 3, I don't know if I simply want there to something beyond this experience we call life or if I believe at all in it.
You can be an atheist and wonder about the "hereafter" and you can be a "believer" and wonder if there is a God. It's okay, we are people and that's the way people are. If you find comfort in wondering if there is a chance to see your mother again, that's okay, it doesn't make you not an atheist unless that is what you want.

You do realize the bible we know resulted from some editing by the Concil of Nicaea. Emperor Constantine I called a council to bring Christianity more in line with Roman tradition and our "Bible" was one of the results.
https://www.britannica.com/event/Council-of-Nicaea-Christianity-325

You can find some of the deleted portions in the Apocrypha
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biblical_apocrypha

If you look in some of the other translations of the Bible than the King James; you find it was a declaration of a census to be taken empire wide that brought Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem. (Learned that from a preacher cousin)

One of my history profs told us that roman exchequers did tax and census during the Ides of August so it would be ready for presentation to the Emperor during the Sol Invictus Celebration (Ides of January, Janus being the patron god of Rome)

The key problem with the Bible, is that God didn't think this through. He should have just wrote the magical holy book himself and hand it over to some sacred human to pass it down generations to generations kept in some holy place, and this book is eternal and magical and will never disintegrate or can be destroyed, so people of all eternity can refer to his actual words. Then there would be ZERO ISSUES or disagreements. (PS: for actual security, if this book gets into the hands of somebody not worthy of accurately spreading the message of the book, it would just poof and disappear and appear in the hands of whoever God chooses to continue his message, problem solved!) He got magic, he can make all this shit happen!

The problem is, God relied on human beings to make his book. Which was a damn bad decision on his part!

Seriously, sometimes, if humans are all super imperfect, they obviously got it from their creator!

Or how about stop being invisible and come down and make a youtube video of his own words himself!

I mean if there is a worst communicator in this universe. It is definitely the Christian God.

It's funny like I love Christmas. But I associate it with Santa Claus and Reindeers and Christmas Trees. Not with Christianity. Pretty sure in many ways, Santa Claus and his magical reindeers is not exactly part of Christianity .

It reminds me of when I was a kid, and the explanation given to me about why God did not answer my prayers. Because there are gazillion people on this earth praying to him and he needs to prioritize more important issues and my wants are probably extremely low on the priority list. Lol, one person up in the sky juggling so much.

Seems that Greta yearns for certainty as do most of our species. But wouldn't that be boring then, having no variation in moral code and everyone would be on the page regarding good vs. evil? Got to give kudos to the Christers for leaving us with a fucked up set of choices.

Right, like the Universe is 6000 years old, yep.

You touch on it alright and quick work as I guess all worlds only...took 6 days.

But therein lies the whole delusion(s) about the bible. The faithful are and have been forced to cherry pick their scriptures.

Most of which no longer followed or believed, because of the reason brought to bear by secular humanism.

But hey, let's go to war over it...waddya say ?

But nonetheless, we are up to what, over $6 billion in the 24 hours considered to be 'Green' Friday. Why anybody still insists on calling [it] Black Friday, I can't figure.

Oh ok, that's right...'in-the-black' it's an accounting term. Geez, what was I thinking ?

We all know that day is brightened up with...the color of money. There is our one certainty.

The rest is merely conversation.

Oh no, I didn't know. Say it ain't so 'Joe.' Does this really mean that people survived, built civilizations and for 1,000's of years, moved on and all...without the 10 commandments ?

You sure that isn't fake history ?

there are a number of people here who have absolutely no business commenting on the bible. youre most certainly one of them.

The issue is, that book is suppose to guide you on what type of behaviour will bring you to heaven and what type of behaviour will land you in hell. Hell is eternal with no point of return.

It is kinda life or death seriousness IF all that stuffs is true.

For God to make it super confusing and so many different interpretation, leaving flawed human beings to handle spreading of his message, is damning alot of innocent people who were misguided into wrong interpretations to hell.

Which is why, my conclusion is, the Christian God is evil. He thinks this is funny and amusing.

by way of an answer to your questions/retorts, see my point above about him being one of the people that shouldn't be commenting on the bible (or Christianity).

in short, he doesn't really know whats in it, or what its about, but he knows more than the people who do.

Thanx, I should realize that most threads about the veracity of the bible will be filled with people who think because they went to Sunday School a couple times but have never read the Bible, somehow are experts on what the Bible says.

I mean when you have to explain to people that the Bible does not indicate the exact date of Jesus' birth and that what is known as "Christmas" is a corruption of the pagan holiday of the Saturnalia that was celebrated around the 25 of Dec. and that the gift giving Magi showed up about three years late for the birth of Jesus, you begin to realize that a lot people seem to believe that the Bible is filled with descriptions of large cartoon characters like Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny and yet think they are Bible experts.

Yes, I shouldn't allow myself to be drawn into these "discussions" because they always end up with being asked to come up with answers to long cut and posts from some atheist website and the person who posts it generally doesn't have Bible knowledge to know that most of it is meaningless.

It doesn't. However Archbishop Ussher is very emphatic that he got his date of 4004 BC for the world's creation from a careful study of Genesis, and spends most of his Anales Veteris blathering about how the King James version clearly supports his argument. Presumably he didn't want anybody thinking that his thesis had been influenced by any of the talmudic scholars who were convinced that the first chapter of Genesis takes place at least a thousand years earlier.

I'll go one better, here is the fucking logic behind the fundy christian chronology of earth's age. and by extension, the age of the universe.

And let us not forget the fundy christian denial of evolution, because it aint in the bible.
