WASHINGTON, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- The first observations of a neutron-star merger in both gravitational waves and light were named on Thursday by the influential U.S. journal Science as 2017's Breakthrough of the Year.

It's the second year in a row that editors of the U.S. scientific magazine have awarded its highest yearly honor to a discovery linked to gravitational waves, the ripples in space and time caused by the most powerful and energetic events in the universe.

"Gravitational waves are the gift that keeps on giving," explained Science News Editor Tim Appenzeller. "Being able to get the full picture of violent events like this promises to transform astrophysics, and that made this year's observation the clear Breakthrough for 2017."

Originally predicted in the early 20th century by Albert Einstein, gravitational waves were not detected until 2015, when the U.S. Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) identified a signal caused by two black holes spiraling towards each other and merging.First-seen gravitational wave event named Science's Breakthrough of the Year

Thank you for posting this.
I really enjoyed it.

Since this is the Politics forum, I think the one paragraph
to highlight is this one.

'"Although discoveries from LIGO have been relatively rapid, they overlie
a long history of painstaking work by scientists and engineers, as well as
patient support from the U.S. National Science Foundation, which has
invested 1.1 billion U.S. dollars in LIGO since 1990," he wrote."

The "he" in this case being Jeremy Berg, the editor-in-chief of Science.

It highlights the value of funding basic science not just science with an
immediate cash payout.

I posted it here, because of the simple fact that, unfortunately science has become political, either in the denial of science fact, or the over blowing the contributing factors involved in trends

I hope that these 'waves' don't contribute to climate change.

MasterDrakk -> RE: Science event of the year (12/23/2017 3:18:38 PM)

They won't. Nor does the fact that dark matter appears to be common particles.

There is no climate change in outer space that is caused or exacerbated by man. As a human, and particularly as a deranged howling imbecilic rightist, you are insignificant in the universe, as in life.

Hoo dougies, artificial gravity and antigrav can't be far behind. ;-)

RottenJohnny -> RE: Science event of the year (12/24/2017 9:26:46 AM)

FR

Certainly one of the coolest events to observe ever but as a side note...aren't some scientists now saying that stable neutron stars aren't possible? Without electron/proton pairs the decay rate of free neutrons is just a few minutes so a neutron star could never exist for very long?

Real0ne -> RE: Science event of the year (12/24/2017 4:25:41 PM)

all that system does is detect a vibration.
there is no way they know for a fact that what they are detecting is 'gravity'.
great way to shit away billions of TP dollars though to continue to drum up worship for the failing Einstein metaphysics. How wierd looking at this board through curved space, what a trip! [&:]

no no mnottertroll, you still don't get it do you? in order for insults to have any effect, to carry any weight, to work---they have to be rooted in observable truth. otherwise, like yours, they are just sewage indicative of your arrested development...and your malevolence.

see how that works?

see how that works?

Actually no: all they require is that the target takes them seriously.
I can credit that you've never managed to insult anybody in your life given that, but don't try to share your inadequecies as a disser out like this, and try to dignify your failure with bullshit arguments, eh? Your opinion is worthless: you couldn't insult anybody if your life depended upon it, because they'd have to value and respect your opinion first. Not gonna happen, is it?
Merry Christmas, twatwaffle.

I doubt that bounty even reads your posts, little whore boy.

bounty44 -> RE: Science event of the year (12/25/2017 2:20:29 PM)

I just recently commented on a post Michael made concerning the comrades' "mind reading" abilities. something we've all seen numerous times.

have you noticed too their ability in being omniscient? its just as bad.

MasterDrakk -> RE: Science event of the year (12/27/2017 10:35:44 AM)

the commie rightists mind reading abilities are nil, since they have no mind of their own. And you apparently dont know shit about neutron stars. No major surprise, you have demonstrated you dont know shit about anything, repeatedly.
