PeonForHer -> Your Favourite Crassmas Song? (12/23/2017 4:07:57 PM)

I was quite surprised, in a way, to see that The Pogues' 'Fairytale of New York' is the world's most popular Xmas song. I like it myself but - really, it's pretty gritty and dark, isn't it?

What's yours, and why?

The theme from 'Die Hard'

DocStrange -> RE: Your Favourite Crassmas Song? (12/24/2017 10:29:17 AM)

My favorite is "O Holy Night". The song always sends a shiver down my spine with the right voice belting it out :). To hear it live in a Cathedral with great acoustics is unforgettable!

My dear, peon...

Why would you think it would be anything else other than "All I Want for Christmas...?"

And, further, my dear man, I'll still be sitting here, watching the movies inspired by Dickens (of whom I know you don't approve) and doing things you would laugh at me over, and silly stuff like that.

For what it's worth, I'm thinking of you this Christmas.

(Happy Boxing Day!)

Now, bugger off!!

The Mariah version or Vince Vance and the Valiants?

LadyPact -> RE: Your Favourite Crassmas Song? (12/24/2017 5:05:08 PM)

The Mariah version. No doubt. [;)]

Wayward5oul -> RE: Your Favourite Crassmas Song? (12/24/2017 5:22:32 PM)

Aw, I love the singer from the Vince Vance version...she was later to play Patsy Cline in a touring show.

I say version, but its a different song, same title though.

LadyPact -> RE: Your Favourite Crassmas Song? (12/24/2017 5:59:46 PM)

While I appreciate it, I wasn't quite taken with that version. Though, I am quite certain the gal would make a lovely movie version Patsy Cline.

There's another version I heard on the radio the other day by a guy named (no kidding) Michael Bubble. He has a lovely voice, but the rendition was awful. [:'(]

His last name is actually Bublè... pronounced booblay, lol. He has actually had several hits.

LOL. Being a music connoisseur isn't one of my strong points. I'd never heard of the man before a few days ago. Good voice, though. [:)]

I like Fairytale of New York, but if I'm singing then I like Santa Baby. I can not stand Mariah carey, and I am sick of hearing her after the first time.

However, I also love this from Lennox :-) The video is very Pagan for a Christian Hymn :-) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlsJD8RlhbI

There's a great version of the Cherry Tree Carol by Shirley Collins if you fancy something a bit less pagan looking. (Joan Baez and Maddy Pryor have both recorded it as well, though Pryor on her own rather than as part of Steeleye Span, sadly.)
I can't see any issue with Fairytale of New York. If it's that, Slade, Chris de Burgh or the fucking Rollers there's no contest at all, is there?

The Pagan aspect to the video is actually the draw for me, being as I am one [:D]

I celebrate Yule, and Christmas, but Yule means more to me. Christmas is celebrated more for the rest of my family, but if it wasn't for them, I really wouldn't bother.

Now you mention that, surely Inkubus Sukkubus or somebody else who makes a big deal of being pagan has done a non-christian Yule/Saturnalia/Lammastide song by now? I can't even think of a Hannukah song by Lou Reed or Irving Berlin, now you've raised that one. (There is a gabba version of Havah Nagila, but that probably doesn't count...)

needlesandpins -> RE: Your Favourite Crassmas Song? (12/27/2017 11:23:22 AM)

Ring out Solstice Bells by Jethro Tull is Pagan, and one that I like a lot. Deck the halls is also a Pagan carol, but sung by Christians that probably have no idea as to why they do so, along with why they put up a Christmas tree, have a Yule log, or why Santa has a sled pulled by EIGHT deer lol

Don't know that one. (Mind you, if it isn't on Aqualung or Thick As A Brick, I wouldn't.) Thanks for the tip.

What? No Stand Up or Living in the Past?

If you're going there at all, you want to go there.

BTW, Ian Anderson's first Christmas song (contained in the second mentioned album) wasn't all love and kisses. I didn't realise things were so 'dark' in 1968.

WhoreMods -> RE: Your Favourite Crassmas Song? (12/28/2017 4:37:15 AM)

I prefer jethro Tull as a metal band to the folkier stuff. Sorry.

Actually it is an uplifting song about love, forgiveness and redemption.

Please site your source. I have never seen this song on any top 10 Christmas song list above #10. Curious to see who rated it #1
