I am wondering about something.

In my country, you'd get a 13th month salary, like compulsory. So pretty much, technically, on the 12th month, everyone will get double your monthly salary.

But I often wondered if this is just a Chinese tradition because, we got Chinese new year coming and ppl need extra money as, our new year involves giving alot of people alot of money.

Or does every company in the whole world practice this? Give every employee a 13th Month salary? (And then usually on top of this, there are proper bonuses, could be 3 months to 6 months etc)

In the US that certainly is not the norm. Some companies will give you a Christmas bonus but that is usually not even a weeks pay. Some will give away some type of baskets of goodies like a ham or fruit basket. Some will have a company paid celebration happy hour or dinner. I could only dream of getting a whole months salary.

FR -

In this country/culture, people are not paid according to what they need.
Employers pay a salary that they feel is fair for the job - or lower, if they think they can get away with it.
If an employee needs extra money, they are told to go find a second job.

Are you from US too or elsewhere?

I guess our 13th month salary is truly a chinese tradition to give employees money for chinese new year. It's so normal here that only recently did I ponder if it was universal a world wide thing or just us.

Anybody from Europe can chip in?

Usually, it's normal for the company here to do a company Christmas dinner and give Christmas presents usually in form of cash or vouchers given to you in an envelope. Like if it's cash, it's usually just token $20 to $50 for you to buy your own Christmas present. Higher management might get $100 to $300 depending.

But the 13th month bonus is for December salary usually. I always wondered why we have 13th month bonus. It's not tied to performance. Everyone just gets it. There is performance bonuses on top of this. Which you may not get or can get up till 7 months for top performers.

I figured it gotta be for Chinese New Year, as I guess by the time you give red packets filled with money to everyone, you'd have spent your 13th month bonus.

So the crazy thing is, MNCs, so like American companies, even though they don't practice it in the US, will still give 13th month bonus here.

I'm in the U.S.
In all my years of working, the only "extras" I have ever received were an occasional turkey or ham at Christmas, or a gift certificate to a local supermarket to presumably buy a turkey or ham.
All together, I received a turkey, ham, or gift certificate a total of maybe 6 or 8 times out of over 40 years of working.

Yes, of course every company in the whole world acknowledges the Chinese tradition of paying double in the last month, along with everybody celebrating the Chinese new year, and everybody observing the Chinese calendar.

Why do you ask?

Because, it's not acknowledged as a uniquely chinese thing here. It's just normal for all companies to do that. Even if it's a company that employs only non-chinese. It's like just normal practice here some how.

Maybe the Brits could chip in, maybe they practice this in Britain and we adopted it.
