IRS funding, energy production, immigration, crime and abortion.

Scalise chastises the Dems for not taking bills through proper channels (Committee's), but says Republicans will introduce legislation that's ready-to-go until committees can get going. Uh huh. Makes sense.

So we begin the last two years of Biden's first term with a split government. I'm not hopeful that much will be done, without Executive Order or administrative policy, as the House and Senate aren't likely to agree on much. But the GOP House only has to look like it's trying, then the party can use it against the Dems in '24.

But perhaps we'll get sensible compromise, and new laws that truly reflect our people, and not a party. It could happen. Shush. It could happen this time dammit!

So.... I have to say.... the Republican House agenda for 2023 is surprising. Republicans rarely (and I mean extremely rarely) have any ideas for any good governance. Whatever legislation they DO propose is merely designed to "own the libs" and fire up the base.

This agenda is not an exception... EXCEPT a few of the ideas, in addition to their "own the libs" value, are some actually good ideas. Not good enough to actually significantly benefit anyone's life significantly, mind you. But not all horribly bad ideas (like a typical Republican agenda, ESPECIALLY in the House)

ok, per the link above... 1x1 - With a Good Governance score - 1-10 (10 being highest)

1. Defund the IRS - This one is purely an "own the libs" bill and is just plain stupid, as we have a $4.5B gap in collecting owed taxes.
Good Governance score - 1

2. prohibit “non-emergency drawdowns of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve” without a plan to boost energy production on federal lands. - Well, putting some accountability around drawing down the Strategic Petroleum Reserve is a good idea. Requiring "a plan" to boost energy production is a rather silly show bill to "own the libs". The Federal Government doesn't produce energy. This is done by private energy companies. It is energy companies job to create a plan to boost energy production. Not the Federal Government. This is a bill destined for the mindless pundits on Fox News that know nothing about how the energy business works.
Good Governance score - 2 (for trying!)

3. restrict the Energy secretary from selling petroleum from the strategic reserve to China. Good one guys! Good idea, and affords a free shot at Biden for selling to China
Good Governance score - 6 (Good idea) - Not going to directly help anyone, but a good idea in foreign policy

4. allow the Homeland Security secretary to turn away certain migrants in order to achieve “operational control” at the border. - 9 (Great idea) - Obviously an "own the libs" bill, but in this case, the libs deserve to be owned. The Biden/Mayorkas border policy is a disaster. and Kamala Harris is so mindless, she really needs to be a Republican. This is a Great idea and can replace title 42.
Good Governance score - 9

5. require the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, which is used during sales of firearms, to notify Immigration and Customs Enforcement and local law enforcement if a person in the U.S. illegally attempts to buy a firearm. Not a bad idea. Will piss off the gun lobby. I doubt this will even clear the Republican side of the House. Even if it did, Republicans in the Senate would kill it.
Good Governance score - 6

6. Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, which would require care to be given to an infant who survives an abortion procedure.
A show bill, signifying nothing as it is duplicative local laws and bills that have already passed. A complete waste.
Good Governance score - 1

7. permanently codify the Hyde amendment, which prohibits federal funding for abortion procedures, and expands the prohibition to bar federal funding for insurance plans that offer elective abortion. Another ridiculous show bill, signifying nothing
Good Governance score - 1

8. establish a select committee on China, which will formally be called the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party.
Good Governance score - 10 - LOVE IT!!! (As long as the committee has clear, non-partisan goals of determining best policy vis-a-vis China!)

9. address crime with a bill to require prosecutors to report how many cases they decline to prosecute and other metrics and a resolution to express support for law enforcement and condemn efforts to defund or dismantle such agencies.
Good Governance score - 7 - This is a good idea. It can more easily enable Congress to hold accountable George Soros funded woke prosecutors and the crime they encourage in their communities.

I don't think much of the GOP agenda would get passed the Senate.

I believe Congress does need a Committee devoted to China, but I also think they need a Committee devoted to Russia as well. These countries are our closest near-peers, and it would be a mistake to fully trust either country. We've seen what Russia is capable of with Ukraine. We know China could try the same with Taiwan. It would be irresponsible for Congress not to closely watch countries we may have to go to war against. Congress should probably have a North Korea Committee as well, cuz KJU is fucking crazy.
