(If I overlooked what he said makes no sense e.g. you would figure they would have asked them first before getting one of us schmucks to cold call some random asking for phone detail's)

back to the topic.

It would be nice to see a few more threads. Me and JVoV have certainly did a few.

I thought you replied in German to some wankfodder creep? ...

Indeed I did. More than once - usually when we discussed some German history and other stuff...

If you have been paying attention Englandshire rejected the EU, not Scotland.

I did so too, I remember those weeks before and after Boorish and Führage, and what we discussed here (occasionally I enjoy reading the old threads of the days before the big gap here).
Btw are you aware that the Bavarians are nicknamed the Scots of Germany? Maybe not only because we lost our independence after a war (fighting the Prussians in 1866). but maybe also we sometimes eat some strange food not unlike haggis and have some experiences with fermenting barley ... and Munich is twinned with Edinburgh.

I didn't know that. The History of that region is soo complicated. I have a basic grasp of everything WW1 onwards. Prior to that skip back 50 years a pop and the maps of Europe change substantially. I recently watched Hitler's Circle of Evil. It was as terrifying as it was excellent. I also see parables with the likes of Trump and Putin.

I could go on about BoJo and Farage all day. I remember the majority of the conversations being about America cos they are the world.

I don't remember Merkel ever coming up on here. Were you a fan? I loved her eyeball roll at Putin. What happened to her? Merkel Eye Roll

No one started a discussion on Mad Vlad Putin. I can never work out why he invaded Ukraine. Anyone?

Dictators always grow madder and paranoid. It could be something as simple as that. I include trump in this category.

The easiest way I can sum up BoJo is that he is a dangerous fucking idiot (he really is) with a Churchillian complex. He used to be a remainer blnymph

Maybe we should call that dude that's stuck in profile purgatory and tell him to make a new thread. Or we could post conspiracy theories of our own in that one dude's threads. I'm pretty sure gluten is evil. Or maybe it's avocado. Idk. But quinoa can go to hell.

Me?-A fan of Angela? Not really. But I felt relieved when the various empty heads of states rejoiced in spreading their madnesses that she did her best (?) try stay comparatively sane and reasonable. As far as visible publicly now (she stays out of the media) she is a happy pensioner now and having a good time.
Vladimir Vladimirovic Putin is a another matter. He - in difference to some others - appears to be fairly intelligent, but even more ruthless than many. My guess is he has successfully studied how to pull strings in the background over the years and make some others dance. His pro-Russia aggression is just one matter, it worked to bow Georgia, Moldavia, and the Ukraine until 2014 to accept his ideas of influence over them. His failure to get his tanks to Kijv within a fortnight has, so far, not really affected his plans. Now, in the meantime, he made clear who decides about what in the Caucasus-whether the Armenians control the Nagornyi Karabach or the Azeris. So his pulling strings still works nicely for him, I guess. And his orangehead still popular, and not in jail? Maybe elected again? Who cares about champagne - krimskoye for all.

One of the basic questions for us post-war Germans always was: "How was all this possible?" I can understand your associations rather well. What goes on in the US feels a lot like Germany in 1923 ... and then there was 33. History repeating itself??

If you spend enough time on Netflix, you know how to take over the world. Any more time on Netflix, and your ass is as big as the world. You could still conquer it, but it doesn't come with onion rings and a diet coke.

I think most Americans are totally oblivious to foreign leaders. Foreign anything really. But that seems less important than who's sitting on their school board anyway. And unless we have to bomb them, or they can bomb us, most countries don't get media attention here. World leaders, even less.

Like it or not, Trump made pretty much every other world leader look good.

We force them to deal with the superior intellect of Europeans on the internet.

Are you as interested in your local school board as you are the ones here?

There are no such boards which could influence the syllabus at school level any way here - the syllabus is much more centralised, based on expert consent, protected on a constitutional level. The possibilities to influence or correct it have to be pushed on a high political level, certainly not on a local/regional teacher vs. parent level (like we discussed a bit here: https://www.collarchat.com/m_5102278/tm.htm). This would not mean these things happen at times.
My experiences are only based on teaching history to foreign exchange students here, and the stereotypical gaps in basic knowledge I encounter. Therefore I am regularly interested when certain topics pop up.

I suppose if there are common gaps in "basic knowledge", then it really isn't that basic after all.

The system we have here, as far as school boards go at least, makes sense to me. I believe there should be no nuance in how things are learned, and possibly what is being learned. It's probably more important for students in Texas to learn more about the Alamo while Florida students learn more about St Augustine, but they should all learn about both. Federal guidelines should be the absolute minimum that's required of schools. German or Russian may be more strongly advised as a foreign language is some areas than Spanish.

Who runs your boards and why? A vile minority does.

The UK curriculum is set.

What goes on in the US feels a lot like Germany in 1923 ...

Are they oblivious, ignorant or beyond all hope?

Odd date to mention? 1923 was the Beer Hall Putsch was it not?

Yes indeed: divided society, unrest, inflation, political, economic, and health crisis, attempted coup, followed by trial. We 'll see how far the events run parallel any further. (Not to forget lies in abundance).

Yeah, if we could get people that actually stayed with the subject matter, that would be great.

Well, comments can often lead to discussions outside of the topic at hand. This area has always been the least moderated of the forums, but now more than ever it's important for us to keep things relatively in line. It really isn't difficult to gently nudge the conversation back to the original topic, even while carrying on a completely unrelated conversation.

It may be confusing for those joining the thread to see your last post related to the actual topic was on page 1.

Who should be confused by joining? Hello, there is only us old leftovers! Look at our numbers of posts. All of us agreed on wanting new posters here. How often does anyone need a repetition of welcomes? Welcome again, any new and any old poster here!

Right. I should be more clear.

If you buy a book about Nelson Mandela, you may get confused by a few chapters on Bananarama.
