The problem you have is that you are one of those Americans that have bought into the idea that the American revolution was about tax. It wasn't. There was no socio-economic revolution, there wasn't even an increase in democratic rights for the poor colonist, your founding fathers thought the average colonist was too dumb to be given democratic rights, hence the conservative and restrictive constitution. It was simply the colonial elite siezing power and consolidating their position, hence their need to raise more tax than the Brits had ever levied (which was virtually none) because they wanted a standing army to protect their own personal wealth. It seems to me the average American still doesn't understand their own history and how their state functions.

Sounds like a paraphrase of something Winston Churchill said (and I'm likely not perfect here), "A man who is not a liberal in his 20's has no heart, one who is not conservative in his 30's has no head."

It may or may not have been Churchill. I've always liked this one from E.B.White:

"A man’s liberal and conservative phases seem to follow each other in a succession of waves from the time he is born. Children are radicals. Youths are conservatives, with a dash of criminal negligence. Men in their prime are liberals (as long as their digestion keeps pace with their intellect). Do native americans view the transfer of their land and its assets to the pioneers & settlers as a TAX? i.e. transfer of wealh to the governement for redistibution to their key supporters?

Which combined with the influx of money during WWI and WWII brought about massive growth of the US. Most people including me only consider tax to be fair when someone else is paying it and I'm recieving the benefit.

Isn't this the "prayer" that Congress opens every session with nowadays?

Concerning the comments about the wife staying home with the kids. It seems to me that the point was not so much that women should stay home but that families used to be able to get by on only one income. That's debateable of course, but I do believe that was the point.

It depends what taxes are being used to fund. If it's areas that build a decent society then no problem i.e. health, education etc I'm not too happy with being taxed to help fund tridents.

Out of interest, is US education primary/secondary (3-16 years) education system public funded? If so, I would imagine that everyone on this board has benefited from public funding. I certainly have.
