The Lost Mare
" Kara," said Steven, "you don't have to come this morning." He straightened from checking the cinch on his horse's saddle and turned to her. "This shouldn't take long, and you haven't been resting well. You could be relaxing around the cabin while I'm out finding that knock-kneed sack ofwalking dogmeat." His eyes twinkled; he liked the mare that was missing, and was a little worried about finding her before she dropped the foal she was due to deliver any day. Kara turned quickly and glared at him. "Steven, I want to go with you. I am already saddled up now. And that knock-kneed sack of walking dog meat, as you call her, is one of my favorite mares! Besides, this will be a relaxing ride. I need to get out and away from this place." She walked outinto the predawn darkness, tossing over her shoulder, "I'm going to fix a lunch." While checking the cinches on both horses, Stephen remembered the weather report he'd just heard on the radio. Hope we find this mare before that front moves in; supposed to be a bad one, he thought. He grabbed the saddlebags and tossed them across the saddle. Securing them in place, he muttered aloud, "Kara does not need to be out there!" He knew, though, that she would just worry herself sick if he made her stay home. "Well, Missy," he said, slapping his horse's rear end, "you might get a workout today, lady, if that mare has wandered farther than usual." He rubbed Missy affectionately; at sixteen-plus hands, this quarterhorse/thoroughbred cross loved to run, and Steven loved her. She was easily his favorite horse. Kara returned with the packed lunch and placed it in her saddlebags. Glancing at Steven, she thought, he worries too much. I'm a big girl, I can take care of myself. "Well, come on--we're burning daylight, Little One," Steven said. They mounted up just as the sun started to rise through the twin mountain peaks to the east. They headed off toward Flat Creek Crossing, where the mare wasfound last time she ran off. The snow from a few days past had almost melted, leaving just small patches here and there in the shade. The morning chill was crisp, but as the sun rose higher its warm light filled the air and slowly chased the chillaway. Glancing at Kara as they rode, Steven realized that she had been unusually tense and short-tempered today. Probably worried about that mare; it's one of her favorites, he decided, but then it could also be the fact that she has overspent her budget again this month. Damn--that woman loves to buy new clothes, and she sure looks good in them, but she has enough to clothe a third world country! He had picked up the mail yesterday and hadseen the Visa bill. He smiled as he remembered that it was still in his vestpocket. Kara gently spurred Wildwind, a sorrel Walker mare about fifteen hands tall with a white star and blade down her forehead, and began a fast-gaited walk. Steven reined Missy back as Kara pulled ahead slightly. The thoroughbred in Missy hated to see another horse's behind, but this could be a long day and he needed to keep her fresh. As Kara pulled ahead, she reflected, I should probably tell him about some bills that should be coming in soon. Well, maybe I can just hide it from him; I should be getting a stud fee from Blue-on-blue any day now, and I can just pay the bill off and no one will be the wiser. Besides, she thought, tossing her head defiantly, it is my money, and I can do with it as I damn well please. As they approached Flat Creek Crossing, Steven noticed some fresh wild dog tracks and silently cursed himself for not grabbing a rifle before they left. They stepped down and searched for signs that the mare had been there. Kara saw fresh sign and called to Steven. "Look over here, Steven--she's been here for sure!" Steven inspected the marks and gazed off into the distance. "Little One, looks like she headed off down the holler--that's a dead end gully." He flashed a grin at her, looking forward to finding the mare quickly. Steven grabbed Kara before she could saddle up again and gave her a lon look. "Little One," he said softly, "I love you, lady. Don't forget." He kissed her, turned, and without saying another word, walked to his horse and rode off. Kara stood there wondering, What was that all about? She shrugged, climbed up on Wildwind, and followed. As they wound down the path towards the bottom and entered the box gully the weather started to change and a cold wind started blowing from the north. They could feel the moisture in the air. "Little One," commanded Steven, "get your coat out of the saddle bag and wrap up. It will be cold in the gully." He stopped and watched as she stepped down and started looking for her coat. His mind went back to the day the met. Kara was at a horse show when a judge had misjudged Kara's horse, having been looking more at the big-breasted rider on another horse than at the horses themselves. Kara went running across the arena and jumped the fence. However, in doing so she tripped and fell. Her dress flew up as she hit the ground; most women would have been stopped right there. But not her--she didn't miss a stroke. She stood up, straightened out her dress, and went right on after that judge. When she had spoken her piece and chewed him outroyally, she simply walked away as if nothing had ever happened. Steven knew right then, he had to get to know this spitfire. Later that evening she had been at the local diner when Steven "just happened to show up." He sat down across the table from her and said, "Little lady, that was one good tongue lashing you gave Jim this morning." She replied, "Well, he had it coming. That horse was not fit to be ridden, much less win the award." They sat there all evening talking. When the diner closed, Steven walked her to her car, and as she was unlocking the door, he whispered to her, "You're a hell of a woman." He spun her around, kissed her unexpectedly and walked away whistling "She ran calling wildfire." She stood there in shock, then smiled, got in the car and drove home. Kara found her coat and saddled up. Looking at Steven, she said flippantly, "Are you going to sit there all day, or are we going to find that mare?" Steven gave her a look and almost-whispered, "You're a little snippy today, aren't you?" Kara shivered. She knew that Steven only used the deep whisper when he was getting peeved about something. She involuntarily rubbed her rear, remembering the last time she had heard that voice. She explained in a milder voice, "I just want to find that horse. It's getting cold here." Steven kneed Missy and they started down the trail. As they rode in silence Kara remembered the first time Steven had used that whisper with her and how that conversation had ended. They had been living together for about three months. Kara had decided that she was going out with a girl friend. She had done that before, but this time she had had a few too many drinks. She was not a drinker, and one or two drinks were all she needed to make her too impaired to drive. On the way home she had run into the ditch. She called Steven from her car, and when he arrived the first thing he did was check her to see that she was okay--and smelled the wine on her breath. It was then that she first heard the whisper. She could still hear those words today: "Little One, drinking and driving is so beneath you. I am very disappointed in your judgement." Just those words and that whisper, she remembered, had sobered her up instantly. They had driven home without a word being said. Something inside her knew that no words could be said to ease the sorrow she felt for acting so foolishly. Those words had torn at her soul "You havedisappointed me"! She had wondered if anything could take away the sorrow she felt so deeply. When they got home she ran into the house, slamming the door behind her. She ran to the bedroom, sat down and stared into her mirror. How dare he tell me I disappointed him? Just who does he think he is anyway? He is not here for me to please! But in her heart she had known those words for thebravado they were. She had looked up as she heard Steven enter the house. Thirty minutes to walk into the house, she thought. Well, he was probably out with those horses. If he loves them so much, maybe he should sleep with them tonight--I bet they won't disappoint him! Steven had walked into the room and said in a firm, quiet voice, "Little One." She had turned to give him her best "don't-mess-with-me" look, only to see an expression that made her want to crawl under the bed and hide. "You could have injured yourself and others driving like you did tonight--or worse, you could have been killed. That was a very foolish act--something a child would do! If you are going to act like a child, you will be treated like one." His voice was that whisper, and his tone was unexplainably firm. She felt she could have heard that whisper across a room full of people. Before she had time to react, he had her in his arms and across his knees. He pinned her arms between his legs and pulled her skirt up over her back. He yanked her panties down to her knees. And before she could say, "You wouldn't dare," he swatted her hard on her ass. She tried to squirm andfight, but even with the strength she had gained from many years of horseback riding and farm work, she was helpless. The swats kept coming. She cursed at him, and then she melted into tears. All the hurts from her past seem to come out in her cries. She sobbed and sobbed, not trying to be strong anymore, just wanting it to wash through her. After a few more swats, Steven had picked her up and held her in his arms. Her tears seemed to flow from inside her stomach, each tear cleansing her, each sob removing the pain she had endured in her life. Gradually she stopped crying. She felt so safe and secure in his arms, she had wanted never to move from there. She also remembered that it was hard to ride the next day, and she wanted to prevent that from happening again. As they rode deeper into the valley, the wind picked up. Steven realized, uneasily, that the storm front was moving in faster than he had expected. He wanted to find that mare and get home. He was regretting bringing Kara with him; she was cold and getting colder. She would not complain, but still, she hated the cold weather, and it was hard on her. As they rounded a bend, they saw the mare. She had been trapped in the back of the a small wash by a fallen tree, but she seemed no worse for wear. Kara and Steven climbed over the tree and examined the mare. Relieved, Kara was noted that she was not harmed, but looking at her closely, she said, "Steven, we got here just in time. She is ready to have this foal now." As Kara continued to watch over the mare, Steven took his rope, tied it to the tree, and dallied it around his saddle horn. Missy backed up slowly until the rope was tight and then, with a slow, steady pull, the tree camefree. "Little One, will she make to the cave?" Steven asked. "It's only about a quarter of a mile across this valley. With this storm moving in, we can't stay here." "Yes," Kara replied, "but let's hurry." Steven took out his rope and slipped it around the mare's neck, and they headed to the Lost Mountain Cave, the storm's increasing fury adding a sense of urgency to their progress. As he led them into the cave, Steven looked back at Kara, her mind solely on that mare. He watched, and smiled tenderly, as she hopped down and gently led the mare to the corner of the cave. Steven unsaddled the horses and tiedthem in the cave's side room. "How is she doing, Kara?" he asked, returning to her side. "She's doing well, all things considered," she answered. "I think she will do fine. It's just a matter of wait and see now." Steven left the cave to find some firewood. While looking, he took the Visa bill from his pocket and read it again.Macy's $ 323.17 JC Penney $ 178.53 Dillard's $ 154.22 Victoria's Secret $ 118.98 Master's Touch Massage $ 75.00Miscellaneous others $ 389.00 Total $1248.90Steven shook his head. Damn, she thinks money grows on trees! I know she works hard, but her little spending sprees are going to cost us this place if she doesn't stop it. Anytime something bothers her she goes shopping. He grinned. Well, at least there's something from Victoria's Secret on here. Kara, in the cave, wondered as she dried down the horses, Why did he use the whisper earlier? What could it be? He can't know about the shopping I did last month--that bill hasn't even come in. A sudden thought stilled her hands. I wonder...does he know that Jessica and I...? Nooo, he can't know about that! Jessica was just in town for that one weekend. I hadn't seen her in over a year. and neither he nor I have heard from here since then. Her hands resumed their rubbing as her thoughts went on, Besides, she wouldn't tell anyone about that weekend--her man would spank her just as hard as Steven would me! When Steven returned with an armload of firewood, he dropped it on the floor. Kara jumped as if she had been shot. "What's wrong, Little One?" he asked. "See a well-dressed mouse run across the floor?" "What makes you think I would be scared of a mouse?" Kara answered with a nervous laugh. Well-dressed? What did he mean by that? Steven ignored her reply as he started the fire. While looking out the cave entrance, Steven stated, "Little One, we might be here the night. The sun will be setting before long and this storm is nasty--but it should pass over us by daylight." As the sun set, the fire glowed and the light danced in the cave. The fire had warmed the cave's natural fifty-seven degrees to a nearly-comfortable temperature, and they enjoyed the peaceful warmth of the dim cave, with occasional ventures to the cave opening to watch the progress of the storm. Spreading the horse blankets by the fire for the night, Steven asked, "How's the mare doing, Little One?" "She's fine, and she always has easy births," Kara replied. "I'm not worried about her, now that we've found her." Steven drops down onto the horse blanket, close beside Kara. "Little One," he whispered. Kara froze and almost lost her breath. "Yes, Steven?" she asked, trying for a light tone, hoping that she can talk her way out of whatever has Steven upset. Oh, relax! she scolded herself. He wouldn't do anything in the cold damp cave. Steven removed his vest and put it around Kara. "Do you have anything to tell me, Little One?" "Ah...umm...no, Steven," she lied nervously. "Wait--yes, I do too. That plumber that came over yesterday--he made a complete mess of the kitchen! I worked for hours cleaning up after him. I will be so glad when we don't have to have that kind of mess any more," she babbled, trying to distract him with thoughts of the new cabin they were building, a subject that usually relaxed him and brought an enthusiastic smile to his face. "The new place will be such a Godsend!" "Little One, look in the vest pocket," Steven whispered. A shiver went through Kara as she reached for the vest pocket. Her heart jumped into her throat as she pulled the bill out and saw the "Visa" logo on it. "Steven, I was going to tell you about that--I just never had the chance!" "Kara, there is nothing to talk about. You blew over a thousand dollars in one day. You were planning to get that bill and hide it from me, weren't you?" "No I wasn't!" Kara denied. "It's just that--well, it is my money--and I can do with it as I please!" she finished, a bit defiantly. "No, Little One," Steven corrected gently. "It is not your money, it is not my money--it is our money. We make this work together! We sat down and prepared a budget, but you chose to ignore it. "Kara, sometimes I wonder where your head is," Steven said as he stood up, "but I know where your butt is!" He grabbed Kara up off the horse blanket and tossed her over his shoulder. He walked to a rock shelf that looked to be just about the right height, Kara kicking and spitting out oathsas she hung helplessly over his shoulder. As Steven reached the rock shelf he undid his belt and removed it before setting Kara down, never releasing her. He sat down on the rock ledge. Kara stood there, not looking at him. Steven unsnapped her jeans and yanked them down to her knees, the panties peeling away with the jeans. He quickly grabbed her before she had a chance to react, and pulled her across his knees. He reached for the belt and swung it, hearing the sound of the cold leather against her smooth, firmass. The sound echoed throughout the cave. The horses stirred slightly at the sound. Kara tried to free herself, but knew that there was no chance of doing so. Again the belt found its mark, the sharp crack echoing again and again and again. whap, whap, again and again. Kara began to cry; her sobs turned into wails. The spanking went on for what seemed like eternity to Kara, and then, finally, she heard the belt hit the ground. She dissolves into a wall of tears, shuddering and shaking; every nerve in her butt seemed to be on fire. As she lay there across his knees, he began to massage her reddened ass lovingly. He whispered, "Little One, I love you." He pulled her up to his chest and held her there. Feeling her tears wetting his shirt, he pulled her closer, holding her tightly, securely. Slowly Kara relaxed, and the crying subsided into a collection of shudders and sniffles. As they sat there, entwined in each other, Steven placed his hand under her chin and slowly raised her face towards his. He kissed her cheek and tasted the salty flavor of her tears. She looked up at him and whispered, "I'm sorry. I knew I shouldn't have spent so foolishly while you were gone."He kissed her lips and said, "M'love, you are forgiven, and this has been taken care of. We will not bring it up again." He looked deeply into her eyes, seeing deep inside her a raging fire, one that was reserved for him, one that no one had ever evoked in her before. He felt the same way; this lady had found ways to bring out parts of him that he never knew existed. Their lips met in a kiss that was suddenly passionate. She pulled away and stood up. She took a step back from him and slowly stepped out if her boots and pants, then smiled at him almost shyly. Steven stood slowly, smiled and said, "Continue, Little One." Kara smiled at his approval. She looked at him with eyes so tender, so loving, that he had to muster all his strength to remain where he was. She swayed gently from side to side, as if listening to music that only she could hear. Slowly she reached for her shirt buttons. Her eyes fixed on Steven, she began to undo each button, starting at the top. One by one, the buttons opened to reveal her soft creamy flesh, the light from the firedancing off her every move as she revealed the gift that was being presented to Steven. When the last button was unfastened, she lowered her arms and let the shirt slide to the floor, then moved her right arm behind her and effortlessly unfastened her bra, allowing it to slip to the floor. As many times as Steven had seen her nude form, he still could not get over the sight. There she was, standing there, in all her glory, presenting herself to him--a gift so treasured that he wondered what he could ever have done to deserve such submission, such love, and such a lady as the one whostood before him. He walked slowly towards her, feasting upon the sight of her. He reached for her and pulled her towards him, kissing her deeply, feeling her warmth pressed next to him. She reached up with both arms and hugged him around theneck, the kiss seeming to last forever. Steven pulled away and had started to undo his shirt when Kara placed her hand on his and asked, "Let me?" Steven smiled and nodded as she, with trembling fingers started to repeat the process he had just watched. As the shirt slipped away, she bent over and removed his boots, and then she slowly unbuttoned his jeans. Opening them up, she slid them to the ground and he stepped free. In one quick motion Steven lifted her to his chest and carried her to the pallet that was before the campfire. The warmth of the fire kissed their naked flesh as they lowered themselves down upon the blankets. Slowly Steven kissed her neck, tasting the sweet salty flavor with each kiss. He slowlyworked his way down, kissing each breast and nibbling upon each nipple, watching Kara squirm with each movement he made on her body. Slowly his hands explored her body while his lips sucked on and kissed her. He slowly spread her legs apart and moved lower down her body, kissing each inch of her. She reached for his hair, only to hear him say, "Little One, place your hands flat upon the ground beside your hips." He watched asshe obeyed without hesitation. "Now," he whispered, "do not move your hands." "Yes, sir," she replied. Steven smiled; he knew that her submission would hold her tighter than any rope ever could. He continued to kiss, and slowly worked his way between her legs. He parted her lips, and gently, teasingly, started to kiss and nibble. Never moving her hands from their assigned location, she used them to help her arch her back, urging him silently to continue. He smiled as he started back up her body. Soon he is back to kissing her lips deeply, positioning himself between her legs. He gently entered her; she rose up to meet him as soon he was fully inside her. They began moving in unison, slowly at first, gradually picking up speed until they were completely consumed with each other. Faster and harder, they met eachother's movements until suddenly, they both exploded. Steven whispered, "Little One, your arms are free now." She quickly wrapped them around Steven and they lay there, entwined, enjoying each second that they were together as one. Slowly they fell asleep in each other's arms, as their prone shadow danced on the wall from the fire's light. The next morning Kara awoke to find Steven gone. She sat up and looked around for him, just as he returned with some firewood. He set the firewood down and walked over to her, leaned down and kissed her. "Good morning, Little One," he said with a smile. "Get up--I have a surprise for you." "Steven, I don't know how many more of your surprises I can handle!" She grinned at him as she wrapped a blanket around her and followed him to the cave's side room. There, before her, was a new colt, lying at his mama's side. "Wow--when--wow! How...? Wow!" she stammered she ran to the colt, almost losing her blanket as she did. Steven grinned. She gets so excited when a new colt is born! he thought affectionately. "Well, m'love, I figure while you and I were occupied last night, so was the knock-kneed walking bag of dog meat." Kara turned towards him and tried to give him a dirty look, but she knew he was just kidding, and her delighted grin took over. Steven walked back to the fire and started fixing some coffee he had in his saddlebags. "Well, he sure is a pretty one," Kara announced, returning to the fire. "Yep, that's what's my mama used to say too," Steven responded. "Sheesh--not you, silly! I was talking about the colt--but your mom wasn't blind either," she teased as she leaned close to kiss Steven. As she kissed him, he reached up and swatted her rear. She was instantly reminded of how painful this ride home would be. It was about 9:30 in the morning before the sun was able to warm the air enough to make the ride home bearable. Steven and Kara saddled up and headed home, with the mare and new colt following close behind. The ride home seemed to pass in an instant. Steven noticed a big change in Kara's attitude; she seemed more cheerful, more self-assured--even if she did fidget in her saddle quite a lot. When they got home, Kara took the mare and colt and put them in a stall while Steven unsaddled the other two. As Steven finished and they started walking to the house, he put his arm around Kara lovingly and asked, "By the way--how is Jessica?"
