Now that would be terribly rude, would it not? :) The perceived need to be collared possibly stems from a need to belong in a commiting relationship. The physical collar on the other hand has a strong symbolic meaning and feeling for that matter actualizing the submissiveness. Therefore constantly reminding the sub of his/her position and choice in life. That need to go deeper to me is expressed by "collar".
