Hemorrhoidal Skin Tag Question - 8/16/2006 11:47:22 AM

Hypothetical: You have an external hemorrhoidal skin tag about the size of the tip of your thumb, the pain is minimal to moderate but sometimes sharpens if there is accompanying diarrhea or constipation, sometimes you are concerned about wiping and keeping clean because the tag is so close to where you do your business, topical medications are of no help. What do you do?

Would or would you not consider having a surgery performed to remove the hemorrhoidal tissue? If not, why not? If yes, what are your reasons for doing so? What about other factors? Would the cost of the procedure increase your desire to just live with it? Would you do it if the pain was more severe - to what level is pain a consideration? Would you do it for purely aesthetic reasons? Would the cleanliness issue concern you? How concerned are you about the perception of others, like your lovers? Etc.

I'd also be interested in any comments from people that have hemorrhoids now to learn how they are dealing with the problem. Former hemorrhoid sufferers are also encourage to comment and to describe their case histories - how did things progress and how did you get better?

Thanks in advance.

Knock on wood, this is not an ailment that I have ever been afflicted with. In speaking with those who have had such experiences I have come to understand that it is a rather painful malady. A girlfriend of mine who had issues with hemorrhoids following the birth of one of her children even went so far as to say that it was more painfully annoying than the birth itself. To answer your question...if I had such a condition and it bothered me to any great degree in any of the areas or reasonings that you mentioned....I would indeed opt for the surgery. I would think it is a matter of choice.

Let's face it, it must literally be the origin of the phrase "pain in the ass."

From what you described, it sounds as though the removal could be done very easily and inexpensively right in the physician's office.  It's a very common procedure.

I'd talk to your doctor...I believe skin tag removal is quite different than surgery for hemoroids. I know someone who had such a 'tag' and the removal of it seemed fairly simple for him and he was greatly relieved for all the issues you mention.

PS...My dad was born in Ripon...I used to love to camp along the river there!  Lovely area!

If it were me i would have the skin tag removed, very easy procedure, but not have hemoroid surgery. I had a skin tag on the tip of my urethra removed, was very simple, just some novacaine type injection and a snip. By the way my doc said the skin tag could of been caused by too much rubbing LOL.

It's not a skin tag, it's a hemorrhoidal tissue that has externalized and become a tag outside of the body - but it's still a hemorrhoid. Apparently that's what the doctor called it: a hemorrhoidal skin tag. The surgery that has been suggested is in the $10k + range and is called a "hemorrhoidectomy." Takes about 2-4 weeks to heal from it supposedly.

It's actually not my problem, but most people with such problems are hugely embarassed about such things - hence the question via proxy, myself. I'll post about anything as I am bold that way. Of course, I don't care even if anyone reading this is convinced it's still me anyway. I assumed people would think it was me.

$10,000 for hemorrhoid surgery?  What's up with this?  Is this a hospitalization?  My neighbor had hemorroid surgery in the doctor's office.  He said it did make a grown man scream - the needle insertion for the pain killer, other than that he said he wasn't too bad.  I am going to ask, because it's my own personal soapbox - have you had your colonscopy?

I have known two people that had this painful complication. Both had the tissue removed in their doctors office as a relatively simple procedure. Yes, they experienced some discomfort with the initial local and sensitivity during the healing process. The main aftercare fous seemed to be on cleanliness and not straining when passing stool. Both seemed right as rain within 10 days and it was not a 10K procedure...literally less than 1/2 hour in the day surgery. Perhaps your friend has something else happening as well as the tag?

So what if it is you?  People sometimes have trouble with that area of their bodies.  There is so much shame and embarrasment about these things.

I will go out on a limb, and share My experiences with this *delicate* subject.
After the birth of My first child, I developed hemorrhoids.  It's not pleasant to say the least.  And once you get them, you'll always have them; they won't always necessarily give you problems all the time, but they will flare up with certain circumstances.  Some flare ups are worse than others.  Over the counter treatments don't really do much for Me either-mainly it's just time and patience that brings the swelling down, and thus the symptoms to abate.

I have heard both positive and negative experiences about having them removed.
One friend had a dreadful doctor that said during the middle of a routine exam, that they should be removed, and he slipped on a restrictive band right there, no warning, no novicane.
My sister had to have her's surgically removed, as part of it was inside the anus, and had become infected. She said the pain of the infection was one of the worst things she's ever felt and welcomed the surgery with open arms, saying she was greatly relieved right afterwards. (her's was a surgery that she had to be anesthetized for, and probably cost in the $10K range)
As I do not relish the idea of being anesthetized, or having the banding procedure done..I choose to just live with the flareups when they occur.  Even though the OTC products don't hasten the healing process, they can bring some relief for the symptoms, so I have several different kinds with different ingredients for the different symptoms.  Obviously if I ever developed the problem My sister did, I would re-evaluate My "no surgery" policy.
They are indeed the genus of the term "pain in the ass" as far as I am concerned (interesting that they developed because of My kid--coincidence? I think not hehehe)

Yeah, when I heard that I was quite surprised also. Apparently, the procedure is done in a hospital under general anesthesia and then requires up to two weeks off work recovery time. I am assuming that drastic measures are required because of the severity of the case, but I really couldn't say. I think most of the expense is actually the hospital itself and not the doctor performing the procedure.

I can only assume a lesser procedure would be recommended if one were possible.

Again, not the expert here, but I think the "skin tag" is sort of the end result of a partially thrombosed and externalized hemorrhoid. I assume pain must have been involved at some point, but has since calmed down to something manageable by the person afflicted.

I guess there's more here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemorrhoid

And from what I understand, the problem is similar to the image on the right here:

The image on the left is going to give me nightmares. Goddamn!

You'd be stunned the things people tell me. I tried googling up some info, but there's not much out there really, not from a personal perspective or in terms of the issues involved in making a good choice. I appreicate the help of the good people reading and responding to this thread.

Oh god, I didn't need to see that.  If I had that going on, and had the necessary health insurance, I'd have that stuff removed...posthaste.

*passes out*

Okay, roids are no fun. I know. A buddy also had some internal ones worked on, he said it was horrifically painful, especially when he had to use the bathroom after the surgery. My advice to anyone with them is FIBER FIBER FIBER. This eliminates the need to strain, which should bring a whole buttload of relief (pun intended).

And Chaingang, I'm sure you've urged your friend to name the roid "George W", haven't you?

I have no hemmoroids, nor have I ever had any skin tags.  Though I do know about them.
Skin tags do not go away with any cream.  You have to have them cut off.

So the decision is yours.  If you ever want it gone and the pain to go away is it worth the initial pain of making it go away?

If is a simple procedure usually done in a doctor's office.  Though is it worth your time or not to be pain free?

OK.  I too developed hemorrhoids during my second pregnancy and as was stated, they never really go away.  My 'baby' is now 21.  What I have managed to do is to ameliorate the symptoms so I have few flare-ups.  What I do have now is the external skin tag.  Yes, it takes more care to keep clean, but causes absolutely no pain.  I live with it because, well it's not that difficult, perhaps you could liken it to men with the foreskin still attached, just a little bit extra to keep clean.  It can cause some problems with anal sex if the perpetrator doesn't take care, that's probably the only downside I can think of.  Given that I know how painful the hemorrhoids themselves can be I can only imagine what the pain post surgery could be like, so unless at some point in the future it gives me a whole lot more trouble then I'll probably continue to live with it.
