I do know/speak some french from school, though admit I did not seek out a french dictionary to confirm the word Domme...
Someone ought to inform all of the books and websites using the term this is not a real word (or one day it will become, since lexicographers usu move along with popular culture), or accept this as is, because as far as I know, there's no one standard for ALL that this lifestyle entails, so I don't think that's a fair comment about "the blind leading the blind"... I've read a few books, but I haven't learned that any particular book is "the standard" read for D/s or BDSM lifestyle... If there is, please, someone let me in on the secret, I'll buy it immediately.

And the irony is ... the French are very protective about the content of their language. I'd read newspaper articles where the French Parliament (?) voted to ban certain words from their dialect ((--- if a supposedly free society can do that ---)). But here we have a word that most people believe to be French in origin, that isn't, that would probably never be accepted in French culture.

My understanding is that is one of those onlineisms... that it originated online to designated gender.. Domina being relatively uncommon usage in the North American vocabulary..

I am not sure who stated that it "looked French", but I read in a post that it was of "French Origin". I personally did not believe that to be necessarily true or false, but just took note of the comment. However, the reason I assumed it to be pronounced as Dom is because of the word femme -- which according to Webster's, IS pronounced fem, NOT fem-may.

According to the Webster site: "Etymology: probably from French femme woman, from Old French feme, from Latin femina."

This girl just always assumed it was just a hybrid of Femme and Dom...hence Domme as female...Domina is new to her entirely and Pro Dommes she has always seen referred to as Dominatrix.

Actually the first time Ive
seen the word Dom/me
pop up was in 1988 and
was a derivative put
together of Dom and
Dame to associate both
Genders with in Our
Community on line.
Sense the original use
of the Dom/me way back
when the slash has been
taken out of the word
which had left Domme
and that is how Ive seen
the word mature through
the years here online.....
It is what I would consider
just another acronym
short cut that has matured
thru time and typing
shotcuts that is all........
Dame is the proper word
used pre USA times in
England for a Mistress
and matured to the USA
to Domme all tho Dame
is still used in the UK to
this day. JMO ~smiles~[8|]

The very first munch I ever attended, and very arrogant female stood up and proudly pronounced herself a "DomAAAY!" A few snorts and quiet chuckles from the crowd later, she finally shut up and sat down, thinking that everyone was just responding to her delightful assertiveness. When it came my turn to introduce myself, I wasn't about to go near that display. I've always simply answered specific questions asked but I'll never make a pronouncement with an abbreviation. Domina is the proper term, but too many people like to massacree the dommeee

while i have nothing to add regarding the history of the word Domme, two of the things that have irked me over time are people who say they are a Dominate Woman or Man....uh...the word is dominant...and when people online ask about Doms, not knowing that will get them a response from a male Dom, not a female one, which is what they're seeking.

i do have one question though...and this too is a common thing i've seen...people saying they are a Dominat...i've seen this often enough to wonder if it's a misspelling, or a legitimate spelling...does anyone know?

OK, another good thread and I just had to comment!

I too had heard that the term "Domme" originated from the internet mainly in an attempt to separate the gender references and that it is/was "politically correct" to pronounce it "dom-may" as well, as in another attempt to correctly identify gender of the Dominant. And, as others mentioned this push in usage was an attempt to move the lifestyle terminology for a Female Dominant more away from a term sounding so much like a "professional Dominatrix". Sheeesh, pleease! I LOVE the term Dominatrix, and proud to be one, and I prefer Mistress actually - just like the way it rolls off of lips!

Now, My question is pronounciation as well....

is it "Do-MEE-Na" with three separate syllables or Da-mina - I've heard it both ways. And, is it "Do-min-NA-trix" or "Domin-a-trix"?

Too good. I use Domme most often when writing, and Domina when speaking. Our language likes to shorten words. 'bus' 'car' 'plane' 'domme'.

Domme` is simply an easy way of telling of a TOP is a M or F online or in text.
