unfortunate facts...
in the US:
1 out of every 10 women will be forced to have sex before the age of 21...
of those women, 3 out of ten will be killed by the rapist...

1/10 x 3/10 = 3/100

3% of all women will be killed before the age of 21, by a rapist. I think that would make it deadlier for teens than drinking and driving.

and that surprises you, why? The numbers I quote are publicly available from government sources. 3% is correct... that number should not surprize anyone... unless the victim is under the age of 13, most 'Reputable' news agencies will not report it as newsworthy. Rape - murder in the US has risen 9000% since the 70's... NINE THOUSAND PERCENT... and the 'Look at me I'm a Superhero' media doesn't think it's news worthy...

Missing persons in the US:
1,760,000 persons are reported missing every year...
5 of every 7 missing persons is female...
20% of missing persons are never heard from ever again...
over 350,000 missing persons per year is approximately 100 people for every county in every state in the US... PER YEAR...
on average... 7 people, 5 of them women... will be missing within a 20 mile radius of YOU over the next 5 years...

That means that 1/1000 of the American population goes missing per year, never to be seen again. I think someone is just selling cloaks of invisibility.

With the US population on the rise and now at nearly 2 billion people, again, a factual number... most people can put about 120 to 140 faces to names when it comes to people they know or know of... these are our friends and relations, political figures and people in the media...

Chances are that in any ten year period, one person that you know or know of will go missing, and never be heard from again.

quote:

The FBI does not readily publish this number unless it is requested under the sunshine act, however:
The FBI's estimated total number of Mass Murderers at large inside the United States at any one time is over 8,000 ... that is two mass murderers for evey county in every state in the union...

Define mass murderer, please!

I don't have to, the FBI defines it in the document.

A Mass Murderer is any person who in thier lifetime have unlawfully ended the life of at least 2 other persons, but not more than 4 other persons...

a Serial Killer is a person who has unlawfully ended the life of 5 or more persons...

The numbers reflected in the FBI report do not include soldiers who have acted according to the rules of engagement under combat conditions.

quote:

Don't get me wrong, I agree with you on the whole. But using random numbers as statistics kinda undermines your argument, non?

Yours,
benji

The numbers are not random, they are real. Making fun of them wont make them go away. Ignoreing them wont make them go away.

The world is a danger filled place.

If you want to stick your head in the sand, fine.... go ahead and be a victim... but dont drag others who might want to know, down with you.

As far as my comments about 9/11 go, the orriginal poster brought up the point about the laws that are in place, regarding the activities of preditors... I thought 9/11 was a point everyone could understand... a common ground, if you will... my point was not meant to be overtly patriotic or condemning... simply a statement of fact:

Laws are not in place to PREVENT the crimes. Laws are in place to punish AFTER the crimes.

i have no idea about the rest of your statistics, but the US pop is at about 300 million people -- not 2 billion.  china and india each have 1billion plus -- the us isn't quite there yet.  the whole world, last i looked, is at 6 billion plus....

catize -> RE: I am very disturbed by online predators (8/19/2006 11:34:49 AM)

There are on line predators?[sm=hair.gif]
And everything bad that has happened to you and yours is a direct result of these alleged on line predators? [sm=confused.gif]
And your reputation has been ruined because someone refuted your questionable claims?[sm=idea.gif]
And you feel that screeching will "prove" that you are right and that people will be convinced by your immature and vitriolic outburts?[sm=argue.gif]
And you believe that arguing every wrong done to you has any correlation to this one alleged predator?[sm=boohoo.gif]
You repeatedly assert that you 'don't care' . it is "nothing" to you and yet you have not SHUT UP about it for several days.  [sm=sleepy.gif]

Watching your melt down word by word has certainly not been a convincing agrument that you are basing your tirade on any facts.[sm=hewah.gif]

DRAMA QUEEN, even in all caps, is quite an inadequate description here.[sm=preen.gif]

Several songs have come to mind while watching you make an [sm=moon.gif] of yourself:
1. Poor pitiful me by Linda Ronstadt[sm=flying.gif]
2. The Eagles:  "find your inner child and kick its little ass, GET OVER IT!"[sm=crop.gif]

There are 14 bajilion websites with these factual numbers.  And that's a fact.

*whistles and looks around at the carnage*
*kicks the rubble*
*wonders if all this would have happened if people would have just minded their own affairs*
*thinks about the fact that this is the reason that I typically don't asociate many people on the other side of the boards*
*also remembers something that Daddy said once, "the computer is the computer, it's not real life - turn it off and walk away*
*picks a wildflower and places it on the pile of rocks that are in the place where goofiness once stood*

Something funny- I was rummaging through my old emails yesterday and came across some from my very first Ms poly relationship.  This was a total disaster in that NONE of us slaves trusted any of the others and we constantly vied for attention and trying to one-up eachother to the master (who was just so totally in over his head and blind it wasn't even funny). I remember the weeks of online and phone chats, one of us emailing to the other some "private" conversations they'd had and "talking it out."  It was insanity, ridiculous drama and the actions of people who were so caught up in their insecurities that all they could do was cling to the other people involved who were just as caught up in them as they were.

And it happens all the time all over the place.

Her disability benefits are her own.  It is based upon her disability, not her living situation. It doesn't matter that someone is supporting her.

It's a good thing Mezentius showed up on this thread and made it worth reading with his statistics. Hilarious thread now.

Hang on, hang on...rewind.  Can you run that by me again, please?  My Spurious Statistics Detector just went off, and I'd like to check whether it's a genuine alert or maybe the battery's running down.

You just said that 1 in 10...i.e. 10% of the United States female population are raped before the age of 21 and that 3 in 10, i.e. 30% of those...i.e. 3% of the entire US female population are killed by a rapist before the age of 21.  That is a MAJOR cause of premature mortality.

Should I be checking the official stats on this to see if it's really true....or might there have been some sort of mistake in the original assertion.

pedantically
Laura

P.S.  Okay, I see everyone else is onto the maths already.  If I'm sad enough I'll go check the figures for myself some time and be amazed.  I don't have the UK missing persons figures to hand right now but I do recall being astounded by those....a lot of people each year, every day seem to choose to vanish (or, are they 'disappeared'?)

lilmamablue -> RE: I am very disturbed by online predators (8/19/2006 1:28:50 PM)

As we all sit waiting for the next message to be posted, I will throw in my two cents.

Crickets are probably chirping about us, living our lives surrounded by drama. As someone who has recently been subject to a run of drama in her real life (crazy carribean men, gas leaks, and strange mexican men napping) I've learned that most people who flaunt the amount of drama in their lives are not interested in making it go away. Simply ignoring a person isn't enough, it would solve the problem. While I don't like women submitting unwillingly, we are all over 18 and deemed adults. All one can do is protect themselves, and offer kind words to people that need help. It's online, the boards are online. DRH is correct. Turning off the computer is the best practice to those who think they've found an online predator, or moving that little mouse, clicking on the box up top and putting alt.com or some other website in the box is another way.

So many ways, instead of trying to make your problems the problems of others. Turn the computer off, take a break, love yourself...

Do I make sense?
