For those that have diabetes, what is it you enjoy as a submissive, and what is it you dont? do you do anything special to take care of marks? or avoid them because they take too long to heal?
is there anything you're extra careful about when playing?
thanks for the info

sierraflowr -> RE: Diabetes and BDSM (8/23/2006 1:49:00 AM)

I'm sorry, [:(] meant to add, i'm a diabetic and i hate marking because it takes wayyy too long to heal. Yet being  a hard player it leaves a lot of Dominants not wishing to play with me. Some have the theory of hard = marks.
also the leatherbut feel is not something i like LOL
thanks

MistressTexas -> RE: Diabetes and BDSM (8/23/2006 3:31:29 AM)

I'm hypoglycemic, so not quite as bad.. but when I was submissive, I found that I needed to have juice or sugar nearby when doing a hard scene... I'm an odd one... I can maintain a good bgl for hours without eating, but stress me out and my bgl crashes.. HARD. so for anything like suspension or predicament bondage, or a mindfuck scene, I had to have access to something like gatorade. What I hated passionately was knife play. Took for bloody well ever to stop bleeding, by which point I was so looped that I could have passed for drunk... very drunk lol.

Lashra -> RE: Diabetes and BDSM (8/23/2006 4:09:49 AM)

I'm diabetic and a Dominant. I always insist that my sub and I eat an hour or so before play just so that I know my blood glucose is good. I do tend to crash quickly when my glucose goes down so I don't take any chances, I always have some candy nearby just in cast. I also use velcro restraints just in case something did happen he could get out of them safely. Rope bondage is out for us as I won't take the chance of passing out and leaving him unable to get loose.

I know what you mean about the bruising, if he gives me a massage sometimes it leaves bruises[:o] We both love to bite, so I have bruises all over me from that and they do take a week or so to go away.

sierraflowr -> RE: Diabetes and BDSM (8/23/2006 9:34:12 PM)

I know you can use Arnica gel to help with bruising. someone mentioned flavanoids i believe.. well anyway from Citrus plants NOT just vit c that prevents bruising also.
i'm up for anything once i get a bad one. lol
thanks

chellekitty -> RE: Diabetes and BDSM (8/24/2006 4:20:01 PM)

as a diabetic masochist, i enjoy my marks and often they don't last long enough for me, i am also dark skinned and it takes a lot for a bruise to show up on me...i even enjoy cuttings, the last ones Sir did may even leave scars [:D]

IronBear -> RE: Diabetes and BDSM (8/28/2006 7:56:58 AM)

I'm a type 2 diabetic. Should I play with anyone ( rare occurance), I require full discosure of any and all medical conditions in order that I can decide on what perventative steps I need to take or organise for the sub.slave. UIf needs be I can familiarise myself on explicit medical information etc prior to any play. When in doubt, dont!

I am exactly the same way. I have type II diabetes and I have to be very careful as to how much physical activities I do, without having some hard candy near by. I also have my sugar tablets. I can ride my bicycle for about 2 miles and it just strips the sugar from my body. I end up shaky and ready to pass out. I always use bondages that are easy for pup to get out of, not that he would dare try to <s> but if he should have to, he can. He also knows me well enough, that he knows the signs of low blood sugar for me and can almost tell before I do that something is wrong. I tend to ignore warning signs til it is too late.

FangsNfeet -> RE: Diabetes and BDSM (8/30/2006 8:44:05 PM)

If you are looking to avoid activities that leave marks, consider the use of a Tens Unit. You put on the pads, get a few jumps, and then take the pads off. Unless you have allergies to the gel adhesive, I don't see you getting any burises.

As for bruising in general, using 100% vit E oil will help the marks go away faster.

So far you've been given great advice. You can also find more advice on this topic by typing in Diabetes and Diabetic in "Search for Topics"

The topic you've brought up has been discussed more than a few times.

Things I'm concerned for with diabetics that bottom to me:
-- Wellness.  Are they feeling well?
-- Physical problems.  Do they have circulation problems?  Non-intact skin?  Healing time issues?  Other debilitating circumstances like renal insufficiency, hypertension, etc?
-- Intake.  When did the slave last eat?  What did they eat?  How about fluids?  What works emergently for them should they crash?  Have they been having higher than usual urinary output?
-- Meds.  Have they medicated today?  Are they on oral meds or insulin?  What sort of scale of insulin are they on?  Are they on a pump, and if so, demonstrate the pump operation, including emergent shutoff, to me.  Do they keep a glucagon kit?
-- Testing.  How often do they test?  How does their kit function if they're unresponsive?  Where is it?
-- Last "event".  What happened during their last diabetic event?  Symptoms?  Unusual cravings or signs?  Are they more non-verbal or combative/disagreeable?  What precipitated the event?  Was it stress induced?
-- SM experiences in the past.  How has their DM affected their play?

Then we get into the play stuff:
Marks. (Healing time.)
Piercing and cutting. (Healing time, septic concerns.)
Bondage.  (Circulatory concerns)
and in general, their responsiveness, how long we play, etc.

I'm a paramedic and a transplant coordinator, so I deal with the emergent stuff as well as the chronic health effects of patients and their DM on a daily basis.  I'd just rather keep my professional life out of the dungeon, yanno?!?!?!

BlueVelvet -> RE: Diabetes and BDSM (9/6/2006 1:49:55 AM)

As a recetly diagnosed diabetic, I find that I am still getting used to all of my symptoms, and more importantly, warning signs (being diagnosed was a relief, it meant that I actually wasn't going mad at all!).

I have spoken to lots of diabetics since, most of whom are bottoms/subs.  The one thing that does seem to affect them long term is the loss of skin sensation.  I'm reasonably lucky I guess, in terms of diabetes I can learn from their mistakes (and yes, even though I'm a Dominant, they do bully me about my sugar!  [;)] ).

It's like any illness, knowledge is definitely power, and non disclosure, either by a Top or bottom is just plain silly.

i too am a submissive and have type II diabetes.   i've learned over the last two years how to recognize my sugar ups and downs, however have found that when scening, these sugar levels can change very rapidly.

i always always always let my play partner know of my diabetes, and what to look for in me.  my basic rule is, if you ask me a question and i dont respond, act!

i keep juice or some other form of easily given food item near by for my partner to give me should the need arise.  and it has happened.   i'd rather not make it to subspace because i miss read my own reactions than to make it to the hospital.

i have found that severe bruises tend to take a long time to fade.   ice packs have helped.  also that i cannot tolerate being cuffed behind my back or i loose circulation in my arms almost immediately.   i work around that by wearing a leather belt with loops and cuffs can be hooked to my sides instead of behind me.

other than these things mentioned, i'm pleased to have only these things as restrictions due to my diabetes.

play on!

onestandingstill -> RE: Diabetes and BDSM (9/7/2006 1:57:44 PM)

My only Dom was diabetic. Though he did not ever bottom he discussed with me that bondage on a diabetics extremities is way more risky as the linings of their veins are sometimes affected by myopathy sp?). The stress of cutting the blood flow down or the pressure of trapping it can affect this progressive condition.
I'd also recommend you partner keep orange juice instead of candy handy to raise your sugar levels up faster if you do bottom out. the juice is absorbed much faster in your body thus faster recovery time.

I think you're looking for "neuropathy". I'm also a type 2 diabetic. I haven't had enough experience in scenes to know how they will affect my blood sugar, but I am always careful to let the people around me know that I'm diabetic. The places that I am most apt to play always have soda pop around. A 1/4 cup of regular soda pop will spike your blood sugar faster than almost anything. Though, if my blood sugar isn't too low, a piece of chocolate is my drug of choice. It tastes SO GOOD when my blood sugar is low!!

We keep small chocolate bars handy for "medicinal purposes" [:D] Master is diabetic (Type 1 for over 30 years) and I always have jellybeans in my bag for emergencies. They're in the car, bedroom, and lounge room too. A small box of fruit juice (known as "poppers" here) or a small bottle of orange soft drink are taken with us whenever we go out, along with the glucometer and fast acting insulin (have to be prepared for the high levels as well as the low).

We have avoided doing much bondage just in case something happens, though we are looking into getting some velcro restraints that are easy to get out of if necessary. We test before any play and if anything make sure the sugar level is a little on the high side, just in case [:)]

MisPandora -> RE: Diabetes and BDSM (9/8/2006 12:31:30 AM)

I suspect the word should have been neuropathy, as that is a condition that can result in the eventual amputation of extremities (that and PVD, peripheral vascular disease, another comorbidity of diabetics.)

lanwolf -> RE: Diabetes and BDSM (9/12/2006 11:21:46 AM)

As a type 2 diabetic slave all I can say is make sure you have eaten before you play, talk to Whoever you are playing with and make sure you have juice, some sort of snacks (I keep a small bag of peanuts in my toy bag), and your tester nearby. my Ma’am has me test before each play to ensure that my readings are in a safe range to play and has taken enough first aid and asked a few doctors about how to help with someone having a low sugar reaction so if there is a problem when we play She is able to react fast to insure I am alright.

As for marks well that is something I have not really had an issue with, I tend not to mark, I do get the odd bruise and well lets just say I find cuttings to be one of my more favorite type of play. I am a very heavy player and at times I am cut up or marked a lot and when that happens it can take awhile to heal up but there in places no one sees unless I show them off. It might just be me but I tend to show them off and a few others I know like to do that to almost like badges we were with pride.
The only type of play I know for sure a diabetic should avoid is inverted suspension, diabetes attacks the blood vessels and the eyes seem to be a favorite place for this causing vision problems. The blood rushing to the head in inverted suspension can cause the weekend vessels to pop and that will cause blindness. The only other thing is bondage and numbness in the hands and feet. There may be more out there but that is all I know about for sure at this time.

Dollbecky -> RE: Diabetes and BDSM (9/13/2006 10:56:23 PM)

Im hypoglycemic as well  so if  I am going to an event in the evening, I plan my meals for the day carfully with corset wearing and bgl  both in mind as fainting makes you look like a idiot like the one time I fasted for a event never again  . I keep candy in my playbag and the local club always has free OJ on hand at playparties and events. Also I make a point of eating/drinking at the end of a scene wheather I am topping or bottoming ;  I treat it as a ritual during the comedown moving from scene space to social space ....its a really sensible ritual in my case
