I realise that these are made from real animal fur and skin. As an activist I'm disgusted. Surely there are alternatives to these inhumane devices?

These devices are cruel and inhumane by design.  That's the point.  Of course, the consent of the animal involved is open to debate.

As an animal activist myself, I prefer to see a holistic approach being taken in terms of killing animals. To kill a living being for its liver, or its muscle, or its tongue is to me abhorrent. You have to use 100% of the animal in order to honour its life and its death. Having its hide made into something that is useful, aesthetic and brings pleasure is a wonderful way, to me, to honour the animal.

Just my thoughts.

There's a lot of alternatives to leather items - wood, rubber, rope, plastic, PVC, etc.  I believe there was a vegan SM toy site out there somewhere.

Just remember to respect others' choices in using leather items if you'd like your choice not to use them to be respected.  :-)

Faux fur, faux leather, however if you are a stickler for the real thing then nothing will be good enough. I just barely tolerate faux fur myself, and being an animal activist and a sensation whore, I notice the difference between the real and fake items irregardless of how good the faux is.

If you are into the real thing:
Learn to tan roadkill or someone's dead animal who will not miss the remains. I'm being serious here. If the animal is already dead, there is no shame in using it. I am a scavenger by nature though (not food wise).

Learn to hunt (again serious), if you kill it humanely, you know it died a quick and painless death. If you wish, go for diseased or starving animals if you are after the fur. Killing them would do them a favor, because nature is a lot harsher on the weak than a bullet. If you go after the healthy, use whatever you can. In my eyes, this is the only way to hunt. Waste not, want not and always honor the animal's spirit. 

Get to know someone who uses the entire animal. Most people have no problem with hunters who hunt for survival. They might not be too against sharing their kills.

Yes, there are many alternatives you can choose from.

You specify deer and rabbit. Do you have the same disgust of cowhide, bison, pigskin etc?

I personally enjoy using the bamboo cane, though I cannot deny the feeling of absolute bliss when handling my leather bullwhip, or kangaroo cat-o-nine. Of course, the simple leather belt is socially portable and a very convenient implement with a desirable paternal connotation.

I'm curious to hear from those that are animal activists. Do you avoid all animal products that you feel are excessive or unnecessary, or merely a selected few? I personally have no opinion about the above and respect each individual's right to use what they desire.

I do not use any products made of/from animals. I am also against animal testing. I am not going to preach as some people in this thread expect me to. it's my decision.
One of the reasons for my disgust is I know that
a) the fur trade is a fucking big business!
b) it didn't get there by being humane, and
c) Yes go on Peta, they have a selection of video's that might wake you sarcastic fuckers up!
The fur used for clothing, and proberly these toys is stripped from the animals whilst they are still alive. Do you think that is fair? Maybe we should try this on alive humans? As a rule I don't think using it from a animal killed for food is an option for ME. But yes as Slipstreme said that's using all the animal and a recycle if you will.

And a final note, which is I was trying to form a discussion and get an answer to my question, I wasn't disrepecting others opnions/choice to use them. Although as you will have seen. Straight away I was attacked for my choice.

I had a funny situation come up regarding a vegan.  He said it was a hard limit for me to choose his foods, but he was OK with me shitting on him (I wasn't!).  How long should I abstain from eating animal products before I can ethically engage in this activity with him?

A lot of the quality toys I've seen are from artisans who spend a lot of time crafting their tools. Somehow this seems different to me from the mass marketing of some of the animal products out there.

If you're buying directly from a craftman - ask.   A store probably won't have a clue, particularly if it's not a BDSM specific store (i.e. your average adult store that has a few Pakistani leather pieces).  I know a couple of places that make bunny fur floggers only use skins from bunnies that are also used as meat.  

But if you're against using animal products, then there's plenty of other materials out there that people make into toys.  One of the more inspired pieces I saw was a flogger made of rubber snakes. 

Interestingly, I only met one sub in oh maybe 12 years that *said* he was a vegan and didn't want to play with any leather products.   I should mention he also folded that requirement as soon as he handled a pair of moose floggers I have.   So much for ethics ;-)

lol, and thanks great post. I'm not vegan. People think im a hypocrite because I eat meat. But I do that to survive, and no I don't eat take out battery farmed meat. It's bloody expensive!

No, I don't think it's fair.  I mean, if animals get to have that done, why will no one do that to me???? 

And by the way, yes, I know I'm an ass, but I do it because I love.  Or because the OP was an attack on the moral code of anyone who loved being flogged by a skinned children's pet.
