Lordy! I have much more dungeon stuff than I'll ever have the real estate for. My sweetie refers to my proclivity for building cages and stuff as my "welding addiction."

If I was going to design a dungeon from scratch I would first take into consideration the noise pollution. Neighbours tend to call the cops if they hear cries for mercy! So if you have neighbours then you need to do some sound proofing.
Heavy drapes at the windows and thick rugs to cover the floors will work very well but I have found the best form of sound proofing is opera music!

Im lucky with equipment because my partner makes BDSM furniture for a living and I get to try out all his new designs before they go out on the market. He always makes things in iron and leather so its good robust stuff and its not going to shuffle across the floor (and lets face it, so much of this stuff does)

If your making something for home use then you need to be very selective and go with your taste in BDSM and what you think you would get a lot of use out of. Spanking benches/ponies are always a must, a small cage, a saint Andrews cross if you have the head space and a must for all Mistresses, A queening throne! I have just asked my partner to make an exact copy of my throne in miniature for my divine cat (queen of all things female ‘Muffin’!)
Personally I wouldn’t be without a medical bench and a suspension rig but that stuff tends to get expensive even if you are making your own.
Its easy to fill your space up with things you hardly ever use but thought it was a good idea at the time, so you need to really put a lot of thought into what you want and weather something can be used for multi purpose. A stretch rack or a spinning wheel is fun but can only be used for one purpose and so will probably be used very little.

Its great fun to theme a room too. I would love to do something futuristic.

My partner recently made a large grope box for the clubs. It lights up inside and the person inside can not see out but the people on the outside can see in. There are lots of little openings where wandering hands can come in and have a feel. It’s proving very popular and I would like to see something like this in a smaller version that would fit nicely into the corner of a dungeon.

Having converted a two car garage into a medieval castle dungeon, I can tell you that the only limit is your own imagination and resourcefulness. But start by asking yourself a few questions. What type of play do I enjoy? Do I roleplay? What kind of atmosphere am I shooting for? What kind of toys do I like to use? How many people will be in the dungeon at any one time?

Then look at the space you have available. Does it have adequate heating/ac and ventilation? Does it have adequate lightling? Is the lighting appropriate or do I need to change it? Does it have enough electrical outlets? Do I have enough space for all I envision?

One of the biggest mistakes dungeon designers make is in space allocation. For example, if you intend to use a 6 ft. singletail, you'll need a clear semicircle with at LEAST a 12 foot RADIUS. Oh did you forget the backswing area? Shame on you.

My dungeon continues to evolve even today but it currently has the following:

A St. Andrews Cross against one wall with floggers and toys mounted on hooks on the adjacent wall.
A Bar hanging from the ceiling. Not secure enough for full suspension but it gives us another flogging station near the cross .
A Large Dog Cage between the cross and bar. It gives us a place to lay floggers or toys on top of it. It also has a dagger hanging above it which makes a great mindfuck for anyone in the cage.
A long couch against one wall with a long yoga mat in front of it. The Sybian sits on the yoga mat to suppress the sound and vibrations.
A spanking bench near a love seat against another wall.
A set of eyebolts embedded in the concrete block wall near a six outlet voltage suppressor located near the floor. This station is used for violet wand play.
There is also an altar and shelf centered on the wall of floggers.
There are also several large pillows including a pink heart-shaped one scattered across the floor for subbies to use.
The walls were painted with a sponge roller and a grey sandstone colored paint.
There are two wall mounted flaming cauldren lamps, several battery operated candles of various types, a pole lamp with red and blue bulbs for spot lighting.
The single window is covered in privacy film but also has a fake wrought iron piece mounted in front of it. The plastic piece came from an old screen door.
The ac air handling unit and the washer and dryer are both concealed by floor to ceiling draperies custom made by a friend.
A small 5 CD changer stereo is also concealed behind the draperies.

We started working on the dungeon in early December and we were shooting for the medieval castle look. It took about a month to get the work done and there are still some improvements I'd like to make. Overall I'm very satisfied with the result. I've hosted parties with 20 people in the dungeon and 5 simultaneous scenes occuring. The picture on my profile was taken in the dungeon.

Send me an email if you'll be in the Orlando area or would like to see more pictures. I don't visit the message boards often so direct emailis the best way to ask any questions.

We have outfitted two Dungeons for Play Parties and played in several more. We've seen lots of great equipment and imaginative design ideas. But the two items that people queue up for, spurning all these great things, are the cross and the massage table. Now we are about to set up yet another Dungeon, this one at home, that's all we are going for in the way of furniture. The rest will be spent on yummy toys. The other surprise? We bought a couple of bean bags for subs to recover in, and they became the most popular piece of furniture. People piled them up and used them in the most amazing ways. It was just like giving a Christmas present to a young child and seeing it get more pleasure from the wrapping paper than the gift, hahaha. We now regard them as Dungeon essentials.

Carpet isn't good as it gets too messy with wax etc. A hard floor that you can put carpet squares and gym mats down on works best. Then you can dump the carpet if it gets too dirty. Subs need something warm to stand on and something soft to lie on, or you dont have their attention as their mind is on their physical discomfort. A cold sub is an inattentive sub. One thing though - if you have a hard floor, watch out for anything glass, as broken glass and bare feet don't mix, and violet wands dont survive being dropped on concrete floors.

W/we are blessed with having made the decision to convert the entire upstairs of our barn into a play space.  Not wanting to brage, but I'm talking nearly 800 square feet of old barn planks and rough-hewn timbers with a virtually limitless height on the ceiling.  I'm thinking a good 12' ceiling would be nice. :-)

W/we will be focusing on climate control first and foremost and will be stockpiling insulation this summer, maybe some tyvek wrap to keep some of the wind out.  Maine rarely gets hot enough for air conditioning use, so it's just going to be a matter of figuring out how to heat the place without burning it down.

I have compiled my list of furniture that I will build, and will include a "changing area" for Me, a "makeup room" for guests and have even contemplated including a comfortable foyer area with a couch and a TV set.

Or am I going COMPLETELY over the top with this?  heh heh heh

Watch the newest Bond film and see what you can do with an old wicker chair.  Just cut out the seat and start playing slap.
