Hmm.. trying to figure out how to tie this in with bdsm, so it's ok to post here. Uhh... my mouth hurts very bad and if I had a Master, I couldn't perform my duties to his person. There. Okay, I have what I think is an impacted wisdom tooth. I have had a touch of swelling before over the years, but nothing like this and the pain. I woke up this morning and it is worse. The thing is, I have no insurance AT ALL and no way to even pay payments if I had to get it fixed. I am starting to apply cold now, and it also said salt water every two hours..but this was all just until I could get into the dentist(the info pg said). I know I won't be going, but I have to admit I am worried and in extreme pain. Has anyone else had this? Did it get better at all? What did you do for it? I know there have to be others that get this and also can't afford to go and get it fixed.. so any advice would be very much appreciated. Thank you, Andrea

Two things. If there is swelling, there is probably either an infection or inflamation, depending on why it is swollen. If it is an infection, all the salt water in the world will not help. Either the body will eventually fight it off or it wont. Antibiotics are the choice here. If you go the the ER, they will give you antibiotics and some pain meds (until the antibiotic works). This will help until it gets re-infected and it happenes again. Remember, Once it happens, the easier it happens in the future. It may buy you some time though. If it is inflamation then over the counter Aleve is good. NO more than 2 every eight hours and that is is you are healty with no issues with blood disorders, kidney, liver etc. If you have any med conditions, then go to the ER. Hope this helps.

Take some advil for the pain. Then call a dentist. You can make monthly payments.. they wont turn you away. It could be any number of things. Not even a dentist could diagnose like this. They have to see it and probably take an xray. Infection (if you have one) could mean that theres a nerve issue in the roots of the tooth. Im not saying you have an infection, but if you do, they'll need to do an xray to see whats going on inside the tooth itself.

Xray as You say doesnt see soft tissue. Go to the ER. i am a dentist, i know what i am talking about.

Also, if there is a dental school near you - much cheaper - and they will almost always take payments in an emergency sitaution.

Thank you all. I can't see going to the ER though, they will just give me antibiotics and tell me to go to the dentist asap. That would be about a thousand dollar bill to deal with later. I know it will get better, it's just waiting it out. I will try and call a dentist tomorrow and see if they will help at all. Thanks again, everyone.. I appreciate it.

I had a major toothache a few months back and I was reading home remedies online for it. Yes, I was willing to do whatever it took to ease the pain. I came across one that said to dab a Qtip in some Vanillia Extract and put it on the tooth or gums where it was sore. I thought it was funny but i had to try. It worked in a few seconds!! Now the Vanillia stays in my bathroom closet lol.

I have to have all four wisdom teeth pulled. I haven't gotten it done yet, but will soon. In the meantime, they have flared up once. Anbesol is your friend! Put it on a Q-tip and dab it on the tooth that hurts, and it'll numb the area. Then take aleve or another pain relief medicine, and by the time the anbesol wears off, the aleve will have started working. And you can always dab some more Anbesol on. I like the liquid better than the gel. I also don't have insurance, and don't have the money to pay right away for the tooth-pulling. Most places will be willing to set up a finance plan with you. The place I'm going to go to, they take 1% of your bill (for example, $3 for a $300 bill), and that's your minimum monthly payment. You can pay more, but not less, like a credit card (without interest, in most cases!). So just ask the dentist you go to if (s)he knows what financial plan is available, and if you are referred to an oral surgeon, make sure they also have a financial plan.

I had to deal with this a while back and was unfortunately away for work when the impacted wisdom teeth decided to act up. I couldn't take care of it right away, but this is absolutely right - the ER will likely give you something for the pain and antibiotics. They DO help, trust Me, but you'll probably only get a few months before this happens again. It will be something that won't go away... Even in New York City, the bill was approximately $425 to be seen by the doctor, have two x-rays done, given a shot for pain, and antibiotics. Tell them upfront you do not have insurance, are in horrific pain, and can only put down a cash deposit. They will help! I'll second the ideas on inquiring to dentists about payments, but note that many will send you home with antibiotics for a short number of days to calm down the infection, (once the x-rays confirm that this is the problem), before they will agree to operate anyhow. A dental college is another idea, but be advised they do tend to have waiting lists to get an appointment that can be weeks or even months long. In the meantime, do think about going to ER. Until then, yes - the salt water rinses can help a little, try rubbing a small dab of BenGay or something similar on your face/jaw to calm down the aching (it works for a short time better than ice!), avoid eating anything crunchy, cold, or that will stick in your teeth. Warm salt water rinses, yes use an icepack to help with any swelling, take Aleve or Advil for the pain but whatever you do DO NOT put an aspirin on the pain site! If you do you will be in for a hell of a lot of pain. I worked in a dental office for years and couldn't believe how many patients did this to themselves. The only permanent solution is to have the tooth removed. yes you can go into the ER and get pain meds and antibiotics but that will not be the end of the problem. It will keep reoccuring until it the tooth is gone. good luck ~Lashra

All great responses and advice. I would also add....that oil of clove (pharmacy) really works well for pain around the tooth, along with anything that contains Ibuprophen to help with inflammation. Some states have an Indigent Care program, for those who are low-income and need emergency health care. You might contact the hospital's financial office and see if they have it or a similar program. I do wish you well, and understand exactly what you are going through.

Thank you all again, for the wonderful and caring advice. I had hesitated taking advil cause of the ulcer, but this chick is going to give in and take it anyway. I made a mistake of using listerine, I think it made it worse. So I have switched back to salt water. I talked to a few that have had it, they said they just dealt with it and it went away, finally. I have decided if it's not better by Friday, I will probably go to the ER, or maybe on Monday.. I can't go on the weekend, because of no car, there are no buses or taxis here. I will for sure have to do something one way, or another if things aren't better by Monday. I realized when I started having fantasies of pulling it with pliers myself.. it was time to figure out some sort of game plan..lol Thanks again, Andrea

Do try some of the ideas to numb the tooth, and the BenGay rubbed on your jaw/cheek does help the throbbing to subside enough to actually think and sleep. (lol) On the ambesol note - be careful using too much of it or too often, btw. If you swallow too much of it in the course of repeated applications, it can make you uncomfortably ill and pretty nauseous, with the throbbing no better. You said you have ulcers? Perhaps coat your stomach - mylanta or something similar - before taking the advil? I've had ulcers too - they crop up from time to time - and personally found it helpful to coat the stomach first if medicine was necessary to cut down on the stomach lining going ballistic. ~Thea

I haven't read the whole thread so please forgive repeated advice. I also have to make the point that it's ridiculous for one of the countries of the supposed "free world" to have no universal healthcare. Think about it people - then vote wisely. Your state doubtless has a program that will allow you to obtain free or inexpensive medical aid. The suggestion I noted in someone else's statement about a dental school is also good advice - students in such a school are very eager to do excellent work for you because it's not just another dollar, their grades depend upon it. I suppose you could theoretically get some slacker but that's not really the kind of people that end up at such schools. I fall else fails, move to Canada. Others are offering good advice on the pain angle, but it's not likely to go away if you actually have impacted teeth. What's going on is that you are feeling stress throughout your jaw from teeth that are trying to emerge but have no room to do so. In all probability those teeth have to come out and when they do it will hurt and bleed like a motherfucker, you will then be on heavy painkillers for at least a week and your face will swell like a chipmunk's with its cheeks full of nuts. But the longer you avoid dealing with the problem the longer the impacted teeth will have to crowd and cause other teeth to move out of place. BTW, peptic ulcers are commonly treated with antibiotics with a high level of success. Stop suffering and see to your health. Best of luck to you.

Either way I would suggest trying to do something about it, ignoring the pain isn't going to help. C~

Thank you again.. I did try the ben-gay, and it seemed to ease it. I did notice the pain gets better with advil, so I am taking it, very carefully. It actually is feeling better, not as sore when I press on the outside of my jaw now. Thankfully, very thankfully. I appreciate the links..and the advice. I have noticed that if you don't have kids.. it's harder to get medicaid or something. I guess because they think you should be working. I don't mind working, lol.. it's finding something around there that's the problem. Thanks again.. really.
