Hmmmm...a few months back, on the spur of the moment, I bought a PVC gown from eBay for my girlfriend. Unfortunately it didn't fit as the sizing wasn't as expected, and being the person I am, I put it away and tried to forget about the lost money, despite the financial hardship I'm suffering...that is until now.  We got it out again to have another look, and thought we might be able to make some adjustments to it along the zip at the back.  Anyhow, my question is this - would it be possible to put eyelets into the PVC (using one of those little eyelet-gun majiggeys) or is it highly likely to tear or damage?

I think a better bet would be to punch out holes with an awl, and then use a grommet gun (or do it by hand) to attach the metal eyelets. I don't work with pvc much as anything other than an accent, but an awl will pretty much always give you a clean hole to work with.

Grommets are more durable than eyelets.

Using either  in PVC is chancy especially if the PVC is thin. I suggest adhering a stabilizing piece behind the area where you wish to place the grommets (a strip of leather or similar). Then use the proper size leather punch to put in holes and attach quality grommets. The closer you space them together the more durable it will be.

I'm with you in thinking that this is going to be a big operation needing reinforcement wherever you're breaking holes into the material.

Carefully cut the teeth off of the zipper and set the eyelets through the webbing of the zipper and the PVC. That will reinforce the PVC and keep it from stretching away from the eyelets.

My impression was, and I may be wrong, that the dress was too big, not too small. You'd be making it bigger by adding laces there from the expanse of the zipper, not making it smaller.

Edit: OK, so I'm wrong.  That might work...but.....here's the spin: most PVC fetish garments have really small thin zippers that are inserted completely into the selvage, leaving little room for the width of a grommet.  The material is really unmerciful to work with anywhere near a sewing machine.

Oops, many apologies, the dress is too small  - it doesn't do up across the back.

thanks for the suggestions, everyone, i'll have to look up the difference between grommets, eyelets and everything else though - textiles has never been my thing!

I figured it was too small. If it was too large, anyone with sewing skills could just move the zipper. The problem with doing that on PVC, as with leather, is being able to move it past the old seam line, because the holes don't heal.

Eyelets are one piece. Grommets are two part. Grommets tend to be larger in diameter. Eyelets, if you shop around, are easier to find in colours. Black should be one of the easier ones to find.

You say it doesn't do up in the back but leave out how far from the top. Basically by how much? There are ways to fix such things that have been mentioned here but corsetry has been left out. Also laces.
